Wow, hard to believe. I think Rich and his twin brother grew up in my old neighborhood. It doesn't seem as if Rich ever left. They both seemed very intelligent and could have had a promising future. But that's what drugs (and anything used to abusive levels) will do to you. These days you don't have to do much more than avoid drugs and booze and you get ahead in life almost by default.

While I agree that drugs or abuse of any substance greatly reduces your chances of a sucessful life what fantasy world do you live in???? I bust my hump, do not do any drugs, do not drink, do not abuse anything but I am not getting ahead by default. Or is that default you refer to welfare? Tell me the secret?

Welfare? Don't turn into a basher. I just meant that if you keep your nose clean and work hard you get somewhere because drugs and booze take out a lot of the competition. Of course you may have to work hard. I'm not on easy street, but I'm glad I'm not living in any street.

By the way, a lot of people bust their butts and never get anywhere- but they do have a choice. One can always look for another opportunity while one remains employed by Mr. Scrooge. I wish you the best. Luck is where opportunity and preparation meet. Pray to God, but keep rowing the boat!

I'm really glad you see the guy as "being taken out of the competition." to be clear, exactly what competition are you talking about ? Darwinism, is it ?

More importantly, it's not as easy as you make it sound -- staying out of drugs and all. Since you're "from the old neighborhood," I'm assuming you've been back since, especially since you clearly have not gone very far.(See what i did there?) Well, Brainiac, avoiding drugs isn't as easy as self-medicating when you're coping with clinical depression and whatever other mental health issues, especially when you're in an area of Allentown where drugs are highly visible and the neighborhood in general is slowly becoming more and more decrepit. Seriously though, have you BEEN back?

Look at you coming out with the snarky attitude..."see what I did there?"...well aren't you just teaching that guy a lesson?

It IS easy to "stay off drugs and all" its individuals like you who make excuses for druggies and make them feel like a victim.

If everyone stopped holding druggies' hands, and chalking failed rehab attempts up to "how vicious that drug is" perhaps the individuals would feel some sense of responsibility to help themselves.

I am tired of the victimization of the drug addict. If you MADE THE DECISION to do drugs and got yourself addicted...thats your fault.

You $hit your bed, now you have to sleep in it.

it's pretty easy to see who's liberal and who's conservative.

context, people, context.

you screw up seriously once, it's near impossible to get ahead at all after that. it's a vicious circle, and sometimes people need a little extra help.

but sadly, i don't think our system will ever be quite equipped and willing to distinguish those who can be helped from those who can't. nor will it ever be sufficiently able to help them.

Yes, I agree. Though it is true that I was thinking of large categories of BrainDead and Got_A_Clue.

I am struck that a 45-year-old is dealing crack. Born in '63, first grade in '69. Mommy and Daddy are Hippies?

I'm pretty sure no one makes the decision to become an addict. Just like I'm pretty sure you didn't grow up thinking, "Hey. I want to be the kind of guy who thinks he got where he is by his own determination and two feet." Good luck with that. I bet you can do the Sunday crossword in the New York Times on your own. Want a cookie?

Also, "You reap what you sow" is a much more appropriate way of saying what you were trying to get at. However, I am glad you used vulgarity; it's quite telling.

Abe Lincoln would punch you square in the jaw.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you do make a decision to become and addict. Unless you are a baby born to an addict mother, you chose to put the addictive substance into your system...that was a conscious decision. Do you get "addicted" from shooting up once or smoking crack once? You most certainly do not, it's after 5 or 6 or a dozen times that get "addicted". Heck even if it only takes one hit to get addicted then whatever...I don't feel bad for somone that plays Russian Roulette and on the first try happens to get the chamber that conatins a bullet.

While you didn't "choose" to get addicted you did choose to put yourself at risk of addiction by doing a drug that has a reputation of being addictive. These aren't new drugs, everyone knows what crack, meth, and heroin can do.

Phrases like "you don't choose to become addicted" is the hand holding I am talking about...victimization of the druggy.

I don't have a problem with helping people get back on their feet but lets not forget who chose to put that highly addictive substance in their body.

I stand by my "you $hit the bed now you have to sleep in it" phrase...I think, in this situaiton, it is more apt than your agriculture based statement.

Abe Lincoln might want to punch me for being a smart-a$$ but maybe I could convince him that I only act out because I was abused as a child and it's not my fault, It's never the individuals fault...always someone elses.

who cares
