I wish I was on the jury, they deserve to be put away indefinately. They are self-serving kids with arrogant parents who think their precious is just going through hard times and we should over-look their crime because their child was the star athlete and recieved a ACT score of 34. You know that does place them in a catagory above the lay man don't you know. If they are so outstanding how come these little twits are in the quest program, which is continuing education at the BYU Idaho campus. Subsequently, their child is disgrundled because they've hit the pinnicale of their life in Idaho at an inferior campus to the regular BYU student body in Provo. Are these the

Well, I guess we can all rejoice that someone like yourself will not be on the jury. I will sleep better knowing that. How would you know if they have arrogant parents. Actually, my cousin is one of the accused and his parents are not arrogant at all, they are devastated. What gives you the right to put out personal attacks especially on the innocent family members. Why don't you keep your mouth shut unless someone actually cares enough to ask for your opinion.

Whoa - from salt lake. I am not a "mormon." I am sure you are. I can tell from the disgusting judgmental tone. You guys are all the same. I would never join your church.

"You Mormons" are not one person and all do not "Judge or gossip". Many people are hurt and disappointed by the actions of loved ones, however we pray for them, help them in any way we can to return.

So "WHOA" how do you know so much?(heavy sarcasm) Do you know these kids? Have you met their parents? Are you a family therapist, with an emphasis in adolescent behavior? Are you perfect? Have you ever made a mistake? You have no right to put these students down. They all have worth! They will do something incredible with their lives! Thank God you are not their mother, father, brother, sister, or friend; because someone like you would guarantee that they would not progess from here.

Did any of you read any of the other comments which were posted on the other articles written. I only quoted what a relative wrote.
By the way this is not about religion, I'm Athiest. I suggest we stick to the real issue here, which is the moral degregation of these students. I suggest that you do a little introspection and re-evaluate what is acceptable in our society. What if it were you that was stolen from, wouldn't you feel violated?
Hey Frank-- don't make this about me, I didn't steal anything. Oh and Frank- I have a daughter that went to a private boarding school back east, and she is now attending a elite private college as well. And guess what... she doesn't drink or smoke, she's not premiscious, she gets all A's and I am her mother. Just think if they were my children, they may not be in this debacle; also known as prison. lol :)

Let the legal system run its course with these alleged thieves. The scales of justice will balance punishment and mercy. (Privileged to live in a culturally, ethnically and religiously diverse community, I’m continually amazed that religious intolerance continues to flourish in this century, as expressed by some in these postings. We’re all on this planet together. Chill.)

I want to know why religion is even part of this conversation. I think that every sector of civilization would agree that stealing is wrong.
Better yet, do any of you understand the economic effect that stealing has on our society. If not let me help you. When people steal from businesses who ultimately pays for those items? Huh..... every honest hard working person out there does. Yes, when those kids stole those items, even the smallest item, the business they stole from have to raise the price on other goods and services to make-up for their losses. This means everbody else gets to pay for their IPOD. They get to enjoy that IPOD that everyone else paid for.
In addition to the financial loss, there are other losses as well. How about the loss of innocents? They took more than money, they took away trust. Remember this as you defend their character. The businesses they stole from lost trust in societies youth and humanity. You can't purchase trust.
It is unfortunate that business have to place cameras every where to watch the honest law abiding citizen.
Some of you may want this to be about religion or about judging, however, it is not. It is about morals, trust and economics. lol :)

WHOA, you need to take a couple steps back. I don't think that anybody is denying that these kids screwed up, or that they need to accept the consequences of their actions. But I do think that despite your supposed flawless mothering skills and unblemished persona, all I have heard from you is name-calling, an inability to show forgiveness or give second chances, jumping to conclusions, lack of modesty, and an all around rude demeanor. I’m sure you really are a good mother and person in general, but to others you may not come off that way. That’s the whole point: You don’t know these people, and therefore cannot make assumptions regarding their character. These kids aren't necessarily bad people, but have made bad decisions. People out there care for these kids, and most likely don't appreciate you calling them "twits", etc. Kay thanks :)

Very typical post by a LDS member. You don't condone the actions of the accused but are preachy and OVERLY sarcastic as H*** in your reply to others. I think this is where the term "moral highhorse" was developed.
Look at it this way, people come up with every excuse under the sun for how the criminal mind developes, or at least why good kids screw up. This case is huge with thousands of dollars of items and an interesting timeline. It's not like it was an impulsive ten dollar shoplift at the mall one day.
People commit white collar crime for this simple but true reason:
Opportunity combined with the belief they won't get caught!

ForReal It does not matter that you are not LDS but your comments are insightful and well expressed. Most of the people that go to this sight are probably family members or people who know these young people personnaly. None of us are condoning or making excuses fo what they are accused of. I only take offense to unjustified "name calling" or hurtful and unnecessary attacks towards their families. I do not need to be taught what is right or wrong or given economics lessons. I will wait for the justice system to work.

They are kids who made very bad decisions. Putting them in the larger prison system indefinitely certainly would turn them into harden criminals you twit. Wake up and look around, well these kids actions are not to be taken lightly, the world today has much bigger issues.

Whoa and others, you are right this is not about religion, this is about being human beings. Human beings with the capacity for love and compassion. That is what will make this world a better place not harsh judgements and worrying about how this affects your bottom line. It is time we all step up to the plate and nurture as opposed to compete with one another. I am not saying there are some people who don't deserve a second chance, all I am saying these kids are not those people. Whether you believe in God or not we are all connected in this universe and rather than spending time comparing your child with others, your time may be better spent finding a way to make a real difference in this world - a meaningful difference.

Hey thanks KCF. The latest on the case is two more kids have been evaluated by the honors code of the school. Not much was even said at that point. So, the program had originally 28, now its down to 21. Interesting thing though, is the Quest program is very peculiar, which also contributed to the guilty by association theory because some of the kids being expelled didn't "take" the items, but some how, which I'm not sure, are some way guilty. What I am getting to is this, the Quest program is set-up in a way that proliferates the atrocities that occurred. The program is designed that for 3-4 weeks the kids go to a place in Tetonia called Badger Wilderness Camp. Then they are taken back to campus where they are placed in general ed. classes with only these select few kids. When they get back to campus, they are placed with the same kids (not same room)in the same complex. I believe there are 4 different off campus housing units they are assigned too; 2 for men and 2 for women. But to top it off, this kids because of the program design are forced to study with each other. Ultimately it forced these kids, whether or not they really want too, to become cohesive. I had a discussion with a person in the honor code department, letting them know that it was wrong that these kids weren't integrated with the rest of the student body and they BYU community. They told me that "this program is through the continuing ed department, and they are not considered to be apart of the BYUI student body." That is there story and they are sticking to it. To make a long story short, more kids are being investigated. Some because they just happen to be associated with the study group, some are being expelled by the Honors Dept; but not convicted, and some are still waiting for arraignment. In addition, when the case is finally closed by the judicial system, BYU is going to conduct an additional investigation. I feel so bad for the kids who were raised with a conscience, and who are being traumatized by this because some other students were selfish and narcissistic, and only thought about themselves. Thus, these kids not only stole monetary items, but they also stole the character and integrity of there fellow students, they stole the trust of the community, they stole so many things that can't be replaced. As a result, society becomes a lot less trusting and more cameras are erected, relationships will be harder to build because who can you trust, and finally they stole from us economically. It is a shame that I have to pay a higher price for goods and services because people are excusing there behaviors.
