There is an old saying, "S**t Stinks". Wehn you go form relatively small animal herds like we had 50 or so years ago to the massive operations that we have now you are going to have an aroma issue.

Easy and cheap solution, go back to what worked before because it will create more jobs and more opportunites for the family farms of yore.

Norm...
My cousin ran a small feedlot with less than 500 pigs on it, 10 acres in Nebraska, it was nasty smelling. Even the small guys have problems. Hard to contain the smell.

Trust me it is a lot worse with the mega operations. I now have to go visit a business I consult in Mira Loma where there are still a lot of large dairy operations. It smells a lot more intense than my Grandparent's farms in Indiana. But then it is all subjective, if you are raised on a farm you take it in stride and find the industrial smells and smog of urban areas more offensive than the city dwellers who grew up with it.

Pork is pork and you can't make a silk purse out of a pig's ear.

If the pork industry in Iowa has a problem with the odor they should be forced to do what every other industry has to do when they have a pollution problem, spend their own damn money to solve the problem.

Thousands of manufacturing industries and all the jobs associated with them were driven out of California, mostely to overseas companies, because we wouldn't tolerate their pollution; and the Federal Government didn't give us millions to help keep those jobs in the USA. Now they want a slice of our tax money so that they can keep jobs in Iowa. To heck with that, give em closepins.

You can justify every pork program that ever existed by saying it creates or saves jobs, that's just what happens when you pass out money, it gets spent and that creates jobs.

All this is is a giant pork bone for Iowa, so that they agree to the rest of the BLOATED pork projects that were part of the so called stimulus plan.

What's so wrong with letting us keep our own money and spend it in our own communities on things we think are important, instead of having the government tax it away from us, and then selectively hand it out to politicians who have the political clout to get a slice of it to do things that they obviously think are more important than what we would do with the same money?

Whenever the government is involved, they take their fat slice off the top, and then we're suppose to be thankfull if they give us back some of the money they stole from us???

To get a life: In most cases the farms were there first, the houses came later as more people moved out of the cities. In most cases for good reason.

To anamouse: Because the government doesn't think that we are smart enough to allocate funds, eat the right foods, drive the right cars, choose the right light bulbs, on and on and on. Yes we should definitely keep our money to spend as we see fit, for better or worse. If market real forces and honesty had prevailed we would not be in the mess we now find ourselves.

kill two birds with one stone, instead of leaving the waste in large pools to reek, pump it into large storage tanks ( or just cover the pools) and drain off the methane gas for power. Some guy in northern california has been doing it for years. the waste solids after breakdown can also be burned or used as fertilizer.

Heh, this is so fitting. Obama will have HIS,(HIS!) signiture on this albatross. Yep, the empty suit is turing out to stink too. You know, America was either too stupid or too apathetic to see through this guy. Now they will get what they deserve: big taxpayer bucks on pig odor reserarch. Maybe they should start at the White House, as mysterious stench is coming from that place right about now.

I think the worst smell offender is Pelosi. She is actually over 150 yrs old. She just hides it well under massive plastic surgery. She might even be a vampire.

Think about how bad it must be for the hogs. If you don't eat them, they won't raise them.

On another note, an HBr catalyst process developed 20 years ago can process the waste into merchant quantities of commodities eliminating the smell and other environmental problems. However, it is not being used because it cleans coal flue emissions too and some folks don't want it competing with their business.

Hey, we could all go vegan - then the only smell we would have is the sweet smell of our own farts!

Small farms can't make any money. 50 years ago we still had some control over the outrageous demands of the labor unions. But since the farms are on the bottom end of the "food chain" the labor add-on costs of truck drivers, food processors, more truck drivers, grocery warehouse, more truck drivers, and grocery store workers drive the costs so damn high small farms went out of business.

Thank our Dummycrats for that stink - as well as those pork projects.

Hey, didn't obama say he was going to get rid of them?

Never considered the vampire theory, interesting!

She and her pals are certainly sucking the blood out of our economy, not to mention the money out of our wallets.

You people don't know what your talking about, you want stink, I'll give you stink. Take a trip to southern California and visit the city of Baldwin Park. It will make your Pig, Chicken and Dairy Farms smell like Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Escada and Chanel #5 combined.

Well Norman, reading your posts, I can tell you know your........well, you get the picture. Growing up in Illinois, when traveling to St. Louis or Chicago, you could tell when there was a mega farm. Nasty stuff. But it's not as nasty as spending all that money. You're correct, go back to the smaller farms and create more jobs that way

A little known fact is that the odor from a large pig hotel is actually a health food and an excellent vitamin suppliment.
