Um, okay.

Right.

She was IN THE HOUSE.

Stealing stuff.

I think she was guilty of, um, oh, what would you call it?

Oh yeah...

BURGLARY.

Check out the headline. I’m so sick of the over use of the word “alleged”. These crooks were caught red handed in the house, stealing stuff. The media is to PC to be saying “alleged” all the time.

Someone needs to point out to Mommy Dearest that her misguided waif faces 16 years in prison while the bad influence is only facing 8 years. Of course they'll only serve a fraction of that, but what the hell.

It isn't even about being PC, in this case. It's about potential litigation. In the amazingly unlikely event that it turned out the alleged criminals had a good, legal reason to be in the house the news agency could be sued for any statements assuming guilt.

Hence, the word "alleged" even though this case is likely to be a slam dunk.

Oh, and it gets better than that. I don't remember where I first encountered this, but apparently not using the word "alleged" can lead to the story in the paper being judged as being prejudicial, causing a lot of the evidence reported in the article - including the fact that the accused were in the house - to be inadmissible in court, allowing them to walk.

Then, of course, the victims can sue.

I can't believe that prejudicial thing would actually stand up to real challenge, but apparently the specter has been raised and so we get "alleged".

Mommy dearest actually did acknowledge that here dear little girl would have to pay the price for her mistakes. But her words made it clear that she believes she's paying for mistakes made because someone else talked her into it.

Even if she's right, the decision was still the daughter's.
