Employee is accused of theft of city money

The third woman arrested in less than a year on suspicion of mishandling the city's money told police that she took more than $870,000 in payroll and vendor checks out of love for her online boyfriend.

Angelique Lynette Torres, 38, is facing theft charges and was in jail Saturday. Bail is set at $350,000.

Torres, who worked at the city for more than seven years and was a payroll coordinator with the finance department, told police that she took the checks because she was in love with a man she had met through an online dating service. Read more

Just want to say that I hope justice will be served in this case and what goes around comes around. Jonathan Battles is a name that everyone on the internet should know to STAY AWAY FROM!!!! You ought to pay closer attention to the news which clearly shows that more and more common criminals are hispanic.

It's impossible to understand why any LEGAL citizen in America would support illegals coming into this country. Think about it: the word is "ILLEGAL" - they cross the border as lawbreakers - so even if they never do anything else in violation of the law, their mere existence here is against the law. And most illegals have absolutely no respect for this country or its legal citizens.

Yes, I feel sorry for the woman who stole the money, you have no idea who or what this man is and how he is able to manipulate people to do what he wants. I know she did wrong in taking the checks, and there should be a punishment for that. What I am saying is that she isn't completely innocent, however I do feel she was manipulated and fooled into this criminal activity. If you look at the facts of the article, he used another convicted felon, Tamika Booker (go to www.bop.gov and enter Tamika Booker in the inmate locater search) to deposite the checks, keeping his hands clean. Jonathan Battles criminal history speaks loud and clear. Angelique Torres isn't the first name on Jonathan Battles list of people he has used for his own personal gain. The list is long. I hope Ms. Torres has a great counsel to produce such evidence, because I am confident there are people out there willing to help her make her case.

I think CO was agreeing with you about there needing to be punishment for the woman that stole the checks, but I do believe CO had additional information that might have caused this woman to make such a horrible choice. I agree we make our own choices in life, but this woman didn't have any criminal record. She was considered to be an upstanding employee of the city for many years. It make me believe that Battles master minded the whole thing to manipulate this woman and leave her holding the bag when trouble came knocking. With his background and criminal profile, I wonder if the justice system and all of it's support branches aren't too stressed with large numbers to have kept a closer eye on Jonathan Battles. If that is the case, I find that truly sad, because how many more victims does this monster get to leave behind to suffer while he waits out his time in an institution that will provide him with 3 hots and a cot and not a bit of guilt.
