I honestly dont see this happening, if it did it would tramatize the whole Southwestern parts of Oklahoma. I do agree that they need to do renovations to OSR, but shutting it down would put Oklahoma in a complete crisis. We need this facility not just for the inmates, but for the employees, and local business that it helps, like the water company. I'm sure there would even be volunteers help renovate, if it came down to it.

Oklahoma prisons are overcrowded now, so how much sense does it make to start closing them? Not to mention how devestating it would be to southwest oklahoma, I mean get real, unless you want to work for a farmer or at the gypsum plant, there's really not a lot of choices around here.

Rumor has it, Altus could become the home of a new prison capable of holding something like 500 inmates. When news of this hit the locals, the howl could be heard way up in the City. Opening another prison is good for the economy but isn't it strange, how no one wants a unit in their own town?

So true!
I will give my opinion on the whole Altus prison, we do need new prisons but people around here dont want to put their lives in the hands of the complete idiot guards they would hire to watch over the inmates. Dont get me wrong, I grew up here in SW Oklahoma but we got some real winners here! Plus we need something bigger, that will hold 1000 or more inmates. Heck OSR has over 1000 inmates right now. Some company even offered to build the prison in Altus for free, no cost to the government!

They closed the one in Sayre for a few years because of a phone bill.

Greed will stop at nothing.

How many inmates does Granite hold anyway? Sayre as well? Yes, the THRILL is usually the one with the answers, but I don't know this.

THRILL if I remember correctly, OSR holds about 800 medium security and about 250 minimum security inmates.

OSR holds 100 Maximum, 800 medium, 200 minumum
completely packed now
NFCC(sayre) holds 2400, not sure of Med#'s & Min#'s, they have 1400 now, plus the 1000 they just brought in making them full, they are supposed to be sending about 300 out w/ in the next 90days. It is also a Private prison, so the owners can do anything they fill fit, OSR is state run and it will cost more to shut down than it will to renovate.

Ok I just found out the article was wrong about the #'s! There is not 1000 inmates coming in. The way the article stated it is they should have already been there but they have got in about 100 and expect another 100-200 this next week. They have already sent out most of the inmates from Wyoming and plan on sending all the rest out by June. Not near as full as they said either.

The housing units that the inmates live are not that old, the east and west cellhouses that you can see from the front are unoccupied and only there because the historical society will not let them be torn down. OSR is not better nor worse than any other prison in Oklahoma. As for not having any reason for it to stay open, this is simply untrue as all prisons in Oklahoma are currently overcrowded. Pray all you want, it ain't gonna happen

I don't know why so many people complain about Granite reformatory, it is not as bad as the stories going around. There are just as many fights in other prisons as there is in granite, so get over it people. I have never seen an unhealthy prisoner in Granite. My husband is there and he doesnt mind it, the foods not that bad, rules are just the same as other prisons, and inmates are all just like they would be in other prisons. Yes there is mold in some of the units but no more than other prisons have in their units. Quit complaining about things that could be worse. Look on the bright side, the inmates could be living on death row or being hung on the square.

Response to your idiot guard comment! I grew up in Hollis, joined the USMC and also worked at OSR for a while. And I take a big offense to you calling me an idiot!! Please by all means if you think you can walk behind those walls and do better? Now if I took a shot at an escaping inmate and hit you it would only be because of the old ass weapons there. But some how I don't think that would be much of a loss!!!

The last I heard was they were considering using the private prisons in oklahoma because it was cheeper than building a new prison. Sayre's prison holds around 2800 inmates and is no where near full.

the units you refer to on the inside of the walls were built in 1983. they are falling apart. the prison itself is so old the department has to make repairs on a regular basis. as for the people making comments about guards being idots they need to try and do that job. maybe you'll have a different outlook.

No: I was not calling all of the guards idiots! Have you been there lately? There are quite a few that are just plain laughable as guards! The inmates can run them over and get anything they want, most of the guard would rather makes friends w/ them than to do thier job and be hated by them! So dont take offense cause I didnt say they were all idiots!
