What is so wrong with Altoona that no one has anything nice to say about it?

From a technical standpoint, there's nothing "wrong" with Altoona;---it is however very hard to find a job that pays you a livable wage--the housing costs are lower in Blair County than they are in Cumberland County;I guess that would be one positive thing to say about it.

Look at the number of people who left there over the years. Most of the people who stayed are wealthy or some of the lowest people around. WELFARE, SSI, MOTORCYCLE GANGS ect. Better to be around working mexicans than to be around those hillbillies.

Well I think most of the problems with the crime and drugs. Is the scumbags that move here from philly new york and gangs. Plus I don;t think the police can handle that trash and when i say trash I mean Trash that needs to be shot on site

I was born and raised in Altoona, when I was a kid it was all older families in my neighborhood, everyone worked for the railroad also, so there was plenty of jobs. The employment scene their surely isn't helping along with the influx of outsiders. I moved up south of Williamsport and they are having the same problems.

I moved for the warm weather plus employment. I exhausted all my prospects in Altoona. There is a lot of employment in Florida.

Hi,
I was born in Altoona and raised there some. I went to the Wright Elementary School on two occasions. Once for kindergarten and once for 6th grade in what I would cal the New Wright School. I attended Keith Jr. High for 7th grade and then we moved again to NJ.

My Dad lived there all his life and he passed away March 2006. My grandparents lived there all their lives. My grandmother's family has quite a history there. The Silks family dating back to 1757 in fact. My brother and stepmom still live in Altoona. I spent summers around the corner from the PA state campus and my dad took us camping when we were kids up in Diamond Valley.

My memories of Altoona of course are all positive.. I lived on Washington Avenue for a couple years and my best friend ever live across the alleyway. We don't have alley ways in South Florida.

I remember friendly people too. I went back for the first time in 22 years when my dad was ill and was just amazed at the snow cover mountain tops. It was culture shock though because there is a more diversified culture in S. Florida so that was kind of wierd for me.

The housing costs are much lower in Altoona. I can't believe what they do to those old houses. Hey if they survived 100 years then those houses are built for life. My house that I purchased in Fla. was a cracker box in comparison.

When I brought the real estate mag. to my husband he said what are we doing in Palm Beach County. We're not making it here. We've got two disabilities. I am waiting for my decision soon.

Might come for a visit. Hey as far as crime in Altoona, you aint seen nothing baby. South Florida, Miami...it's nuts down here. I don't think anyone is immune to crime, but this place is nuts really.

sorry such a long post...just reminiscing my outlook on Altoona..

I just visited Altoona to see Horseshoe Curve. I was raised in S. Florida and immediately fell in love with the area around the curve. Now I have stumbled on this website and seen my first "not so great" reports on Altoona. It's a shame. I was looking for a home site, now I'm not so sure.

i played little league for sandonato club and ate pizza after many games there. Now Uriah's sports bar is there and it breeds dirtballs and drug addicts
