Altoona is no place to raise children. YES all places have crime but Altoona is very bad. It only takes a group of out siders to make it bad. To many out of staters are coming in destroying it. My husband was born and raised there he said he would never go back. As for me Im a country girl that could never ever live there. I would be to afraid of leting my kids out to play or send them to school. My kids go to private schools it still scares me to send them there because of what happened to the amish. Many want to leave Altoona but cant afford it. Thats sad.

I remember Cross's ice cream as well. I miss that and several other childhood memories I have of Altoona, prospect park, prospect pool, Baker Mansion, trips "up the mountain" to Glendale for camping, and more but that town has gone to you know where in a handbasket as my beloved grandma would say....we left...I was NOT raising my children there. I saw many good friends' children going down hill due to drugs...watched a beloved friend's sister become the shell of a person she was due to drugs......it is awful there...most wanna leave and can't (the economy is awful) and those that claim the "beauty" of the place is turning a blind eye.....it is like a sewer there now...so terribly terribly sad......

I lived here all my life and I love it..Crime has been going up but where isn't it? Seems the police are working on it. I don't really see that in other towns (hush hush) Most of the problems are from outsiders. There are good people here. Nice places. I raised my children here and they turned out pretty darn good. Jobs are so scarce here is the real reason allot leave Altoona. Looking back on my childhood I must admit. It was safer. I wish it was that safe everywhere again.
Nostalgic, where did you live in east end? Remember the bakery on the corner on Loyd Street. |

I lived on Kettle for a few years. I don't remember the bakery though. What is there now? Also, I agree with your opinion of Altoona. I was born and raised in Altoona. The world is growing more callous, not just here. If life deals you lemons...make lemonade!

I remember the bakery and Olivio's resterant also. Sadly even that place went down hill. I loved Lunigetta's (sp?) also!! The subs were amazing
|
I loved Luigetta's salad. Fortunately somebody has given me the recipe for the dressing! Was the bakery near there? |
|
