When I was a child and teen back in Altoona in the 60's we almost never locked our doors, even at night. In the summers friends would sleep out at each others houses and parents didn't have to worry about their kids. I went to East End elemetary school, Roosevelt Jr. High and AAHS.
I remember cherry cokes at Gable's department store, and Texas hot dogs. |

I remember those days too Rob. I also remember the sleep overs.. we girls used to like to sleep outside too...and we did so without any worries. I also went to Roosevelt and graduated from AAHS in l965....when the worst thing a student could do..was get caught making an unscheduled trip to Charlie's, smoking or making out...For me two out of three wasn't bad.LOL. Do you remember how Senior day at AAHS was celebrated then? Those were carefree days...except for my classmates who were sent to Vietnam...It seems like every generation has a war...and many fine young men are lost..

I graduted from AAHS in '71. My grandson Jared, just graduated from AAHS this year. A few months before our class graduated they created a place for students (who were old enough), to smoke.

What about bartering with Himey in shulmans basement over the price of a pair of sneakers

Happy 4th everyone...and who could forget Himey..Quite the colorful character. You've missed something in growing up here if you never barterd with Himey. Himey was also a regular supporter of the Altoona Rail Kings Baseball team, that played their games at Vets Field, before the Curve games came on the scene. I used to see him at the games..and everyone seemed to know him...he had celebrity status...

Wow, this is really nice.. I lived in Altoona all my life and all that is said here is true. It is so sad for me to watch out town go down hill with the drugs and crime. Yet. As bad as it is, it really seems much worse in other places. I too slept out under the stars at night with my girlfriends, walked passed the 7 dwarfs every day walking to Logan school. And God Bless Heimy.. he always had a smile for you. I too walked to Prospect pool when I was young. I lived in East End right accross from the school.I loved it there. I go through there now and oh my what a change. It truley brings tears to my eyes. But,I still leave my doors open! Maybe thats not to smart but, I like the night air coming in. Just pray nothing else does! lol... My doors after going to bed at night in the 70- 80s were always left open. I don't do that now. What happened to Altoona and why arent we safe any more? I strongly believe it was bringing in drug users from other states to be reabilitated. We need to take care of our own! Stop bringing them here please! It's not to late to bring back our town and take care of our own.

If some how Altoona could bring in some decent jobs and put most of the population back to work that would be a key ingredent in the future of Alt.

I visited Atloona in 1992. Had a great weekend. Was young and got drunk in a bar called The Hitching Post??(among others)There was Karaoke too but the names of the pubs (do you call them pubs or bars in the US? We call them pubs in the UK), the names elude me now. Met some people who showed us some of the sights and invited us to a steak dinner at their house (you Americans know how to make someone feel welcome) Also met a girl called Michele Pizzino, if she reads this perhaps she'll leave a message. Hope to re-visit PA sometime again. Anyone here ever been to the UK?

Hey, JFB150
Did you happen to visit family while you were in town?:) Just checking.....How's Laura and the kids? |
|
|
We did, visited two brothers and family. Do I know you?
|
|
Yes,lol you do. The Houtzdale local probably throws you off. Im in Altoona. I dont know why my location shows up that way. It would be fun to keep you guessing...:) but I won't. Does your step-brother count as family still? ;)I just thought it funny when I realized who you were! I read these forums pretty often. I guess you do too. My name is my initials, like yours. That should be enough clues...:) Have a good one! |

To get back on topic, I would like to add that some of my favorite memories come from the now extinct skating rinks! I miss them! I know I would still go if they hadnt rid of them. I really do not enjoy ice skating the way I did roller skating.:(
