My Daddy used to make the Ice cream at Crosses Ice Cream. I am still very close to the former owners who live in New Jersey. I have been told they had the best ice cream.

Hi, Hymie worked in the basement at Schulmans for years. Bought lots of sports equipment from him. Best deals in town.

I just published a collection of detective stories called The Greer Agency. It's 15 interconnected short stories about a private eye in Altoona, Pa. Here's the link:

It's a fun read.

Grew up in East End in the '60s. East End Elementary, 7 Dwarfs, Miller's Corner, Mabel's Corner Store, roaming the "Alfalfa" fields (now the Hench Development), walking your bike up the Kettle then riding back down like a maniac, sled riding down South Street & "Baer's Hill", the scary "Pagoda" in Rose Hill Cemetery, grocery shopping with the parents at the Quaker or A&P.
Then onto the Roosevelt years branching out into Tom Thumb Raceway, movies at the Rivoli, State, Capitol & Olympic Theaters, Herbie's Hobby Shop, Altoona Leather Store, popping a balloon at McCrory's hoping for a nickel banana split, roaming around Gable's Department store feeling like Ralphie in the Christmas Story.
Beach parties at the mall with Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, Gable's parking garage concert with the Turtles, Sonny & Cher concert at the Altoona Skating Center.
Learning to drive at the Logan Valley Mall on Sundays because it was not open!!!, Skat gasoline on the boulevard at 23 cents / gallon, the Red Barn Chicken (When the hungry's hit, when the hungry's hit..........Hit the Red Barn), ping-pong ball drops at the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center, Mason's, Town & Country, Tri-State, trips to Loganbell, Crosses or Sunnycrest for ice cream.
Altoona and St. Francis basketball games at a packed Jaffa Mosque, Altoona football games at a packed Mansion Park.
Just some ramblings about some of the times and places from my Altoona childhood that often pop into my head. Most are gone, only surviving in my memory. The town will never see those great days again.
I too grew up in Altoona on Valley View. I remember the pagoda in Rose Hill Cemetary what ever happened to that it's not there anymore? My dad told me how and why it was there any info? I went to Logan also and AAHS. My Dad's family was all in the East End. I find myself often thinking about all those places that used to be there during my childhood

I Grew up in Altoona, went to Stevens Elementary, Logan Jr High, then Altoona High. Graduated in 73. Went to California for 3 years around 1980, came back to Altoona and went to Penn State. Lost my parents in 82 & 92, but i bought the house from the estate, and owned it until my EX convinced me to sell it in 1999, so i was a resident, and lived in the house i was born in for 43 years. I started working for the Government in New Jersey in 1986, so i bought a housr in N. New Jersey, but kept my "home" there and came back every weekend. Now, i get back about once every other month, although every year i take 1 week of my vacation and go back, visit friends, family, favorite places (one is Luigetta's). In 2007, i bought a new Harley Ultra Glide, it has 4 speaker stereo, CD player, CB, AM, FM, weather band, XM radio, Garmin Navigation, and bluetooth, so i can use my cell phone through my helmet headset. So, last year i took the bike, left NJ, and went to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, then to Shanksville, where flight 93 went down, then to Altoona for 3 days, the to Cape May, NJ (beautiful there), the Long Beach Island, NJ to a motel that i went to with my parents. Last time i was there with them i was 9. When i got to the motel, "it still looked the same". It was like i was 9 again. Then back to my house in NJ. I spent 6 days on the bike, and did 2,100 miles on that trip, and It Was GREAT !
When I retire in a few years, i am getting out of NJ, and moving back to Altoona. As much as the town has changed, it's so much better jhen here in NJ. Well, i've been rambling on, so thanks for reading, and if you'd like, you can look me up on BikerOrNot.com . Screen name there in HarleyUltraRider.
Take care all, and get out and enjoy life !!

Sonny & Cher was rained out at the Gable's Parking Garage, so they held the concert at the Altoona Skating Center. Sonny & Cher were the second night of back to back concerts that were planned. They played on a thrown together stage made of plywood, with everyone sitting on the rink floor .......... my rear end still hurts from that night !!!

I think the first nights concert, which was held at the parking garage, featured the Turtles.

I grew up in Altoona (Fairview). Attended Fairview Elementary, Keith Jr High, and graduated from AAHS 1980. It is a shame how the town has gone downhill. So many good memories. Fairview Ballpark, Sunny Crest Ice Cream, Cross's Ice Cream, Woodys/Luigettas, Texas Hotdogs. Walking to downtown after school and stopping in at Gardner's for penny candy. Summers at Memorial Pool, eating french fries on your towel and combing each others hair. Showoffs on the high-dive. Had sleepouts on porches with girlfriends and never thought about anything scary happening. Spent Friday and Saturday nights rollerskating at Altoona Skating Center, Palmino's Pizza, Winky's and Burger Chef. Highschoolers went to the Round Pie Shop after high school games or stopped in at the Dog & Custard Shoppe (now Bestway Pizza). I haven't lived in Altoona since 1996, but my entire family is still there. My Dad worked 43 years at Stroehmann's Bakery, my Mom worked at Sylvania. Grade school field trips to Gettysburg, Pittsburgh Zoo, and the 6th Grade Patrol trip to Washington DC. Lakemont Park was great, Bland Park not so much then, but it is a great place (Delgrosso Park) to take the kiddies today. Mallo Cups, going to dances at St. Marys, St Rose, St Thereses, and the high school - Pirahna, Black Diamond, Steve Kelsey on late night rock radio WFBG. Every time I go home I always stop at Texas Hotdogs, Luigettas and pick up a case of DelGrosso Sauce. Tastes of home and good times.

Hi, I remember that concert, was that great. Who would believe little old Altoona could get such big time entertainment, and I think it was free! A good memory, thanks.

I remember the splash hops, I neve missed them in the '60s early 70s, but I remember them being over at 11pm, don't recall all nighters. Great times, great fun, Wish those times would come back for my grandchildren. My children missed out on that type of fun.
