Michigan Sales Tax. Michigan's sales tax is 6%. Retail gas stations do not pay sales tax on the 19 cents per gallon state road tax included in the price of a gallon of gasoline but do pay on the federal tax of 18.4 cents. The calculation of the state sales tax portion of the cost of a gallon of gasoline is complicated because the sales tax for gasoline, unlike the sales tax for other products, is already included in the posted retail price. I can't believe what I just read. Is this guy really that ignorant in how the commodities market works? Let alone knowing how market forces changes the need for fuel.

This is a very bad idea. Instead of coming up with feel good ideas that actually give us very little, they should be working on that mess they call the Michigan Business Tax, which is shafting small businesses.

In Michigan, 18.4 cents per gallon goes to the federal government. When you hear Hillary Clinton or John McCain promoting the idea of a gas tax holiday, this is the tax they are talking about. This tax is supposed to be used to repair and build roads.

36 cents per gallon is state tax and goes the Michigan transportation fund. This also is supposed to be used to repair and build roads.

Both theses taxes, totaling 54.4 cents is fixed to each gallon of gas sold. It doesn’t change with the price of gas.

The state of Michigan also charges a 6% sales tax for every gallon sold. If the price of gas goes up, then the amount you pay in sales tax goes up with it. If the price of gas goes down,… well you get the idea. This tax is not used on roads. This tax goes to the Michigan general fund, just like the 6% sales tax you pay at the store, restaurant, etc. It’s this 6% sales tax on gas that Hildenbrand wants to suspend for the summer.

Michigan is one of a small handful of states that charge a sales tax for gas.

MBT is the worst thing that ever came along.
Then to make it worse they rub the noses in it when they give Movie makers pretty much free access... or even worse, who knows if there may be possible kick backs involved..

Tomm, the state had a $350,000,000 surplus after jacking our taxes up last year. This plan would save tax payers $300,000,000. There's PLENTY of revenue.

Hildenbrand must be running for office to please voters. From a pure economic standpoint it makes no sense. Over the course of the summer it will not save that much money for each person while draining money away from the state to fix the roadways. Not fixing the roads will in turn cost people their job as the state will not be able to pay them. Get a different idea that helps the whole state not just yourself.

For the tenth time......THE SALES TAX ON GAS DOES NOT GO TO FIX THE ROADS!!!!!

It goes into the general fund, and then back out to the welfare class. I'd prefer to keep a little more of MY money if you don't mind.
