A jerk like him and other fathers should be trying to make payments. It should never get so far as jail.

I just don't get how these guys get away with it for all those years.
In this day and age of being able to track people down through the internet and public records, someone should be holding them accountable.
I know of one guy who refused to support his child from a previous relationship. At first he denied paternity but then the DNA test shot down that little theory. It's been 15 years and he never paid a dime. The mother of the child went through the courts for about three years, but never got anywhere because he kept moving. He has a house now here in Orlando -- it seems to me she could sue and get part of the equity for damages. Why does the system make it so difficult to nail these guys?
Why is it up to the woman to keep chasing after the guy? There should just be a red flag on the deadbeat dads' files and whenever they file taxes, the government should track them down through their social security numbers and automatically garnish their wages.

Also -- there should never be a statute of limitations on these cases. All that says is that if the guy succeeds in hiding out and evading the system long enough, then he gets away with not paying support.

He lived in a country club while she and her kids lived from home to home? The rat bastard, I hope he rots for the next two years. Unbelievable how some treat their own children as disposable annoyances.

Really? Well, here's the answer. Judges who are reluctant to find delinquent idiots guilty of contempt and put them in jail. Oh, the jails are overcrowded. So those who choose to avoid responsibility KNOW this and have little fear of being taken off the streets. Without this overridding FEAR...they have no incentive to pay. Second, these people often learn that they can avoid and avoid and avoid and when they are finally being taken to task, make minimal payments just before showing up in court to DEMONSTRATE an effort to comply. This usually keeps them out of jail. And then there are the lame probation officers....My daughters soon to be ex is on probation, has been ordered to pay...child support and day care...and simply won't. When his probation officer was notified that said (upstanding citizen GAG) was in violation of his probation for non payment and still drinking and driving...his response was IT WON'T do any good to put him in jail. So he skates...Oh but the probation department is SURE to get THEIR money...and make darned sure their officers get paid. Hummmmmmmm Maybe we need to FIRE these people.

With all due respect, and not for one minute defending the sorry "ex", what responsibility does your daughter have? He's on probation? How long was it before she knew what kind of jerk he is, and how many children did they have before he went to jail? and after he got out?
As for these guys sliding by, my brother, 30 years ago, had his support taken out of his pay for his daughter. Of course so many men don't even work these days, and have kids spread out all over the place. What a sad sort.....
And then, there are the girls who don't give this a thought before having babies with irresponsible men, because "I love him."
Give me a break....

There is NO statute of limitations. If he still owes when he starts drawing social security, she can take a percentage of that. She can also get his income tax refund (provided he gets one) as long as the kids are UNDER 18. Sometimes you just have to fight on. Been there, done that and have the tee-shirt to prove it. NEVER GIVE UP. Even when the kids turn 18...if he still owes you money.

What a loser. I just got done making my last child support payment last month.$750 a month for the last 15 years.

Sometimes it was hard to get by, but I always made it my number one priority to make my payment.

It was good feeling to make that last payment, and even better to know I did the right thing and paid what I was supposed to pay.

Make your payments you deadbeat mom's and dad's out there. It is a good thing and something you should be proud to do.

Why do they get married and have children if they are going to abandon them? This is very unchristian like.

"FL Native," I agree that there's a lot of girls who should use better judgement about their relationships -however, the last time I looked, it still takes 2 to make a baby. If a man doesn't want to have to make child support payments, unless he's 100 percent sure his partner is using contraceptives, he should practice safe sex.

Does $700,000 in child support not seem a bit high to anyone for a car salesman?

It is unclear from the ages (not listed) for the 3 adult children but looks like this was due over about 10 years. Even dividing the amount by the full 15 years comes out to almost 50k per year in support for 3 kids.

50k per year tax free to the ex wife.

Child support is not supposed to keep an ex wife in the exact lifestyle she enjoyed while married. Further, FL does not require that the ex wife actually show where support is spent so even had this idiot paid every dime owed there is no guarantee that it would have trickled down to the kids.

Lastly, if the ex wanted an active father role from this guy she should have invested more in the marriage. He elected to remain in FL when he could have relocated anywhere.

Yeah, this guy is most likely a jerk who should not have been alowed to reproduce in the first place, but to have to pay $700,000 over 15 years is ridiculus. That's $47,000 a year. Doesn't that seem a little outrageous too?

I have no sympathy for a man who doesn't take care of his kids, but there are two sides to every story. Maybe if the courts wouldn't completely dick over the father in these cases then there would be less deadbeat dads.

I wonder if its so high because there are penalties and interest added?
I don't know, that's just a guess.

This is a story about a parent who won't pay, and that parent just happens to be the father. I think that if this had been a story about a deadbeat mom not paying the custodial father, many people would have the same reaction. The general consensus on many of these forums is that people need to take responsibility for their actions. This man has not, and it disgusts many of us.

If I remember right from hearing this on last night's news, the amount includes interest--which could be shorthand for "adjustment for inflation."

I feel this guy got what he deserved. As a single parent myself, I'm dealing with a similiar situation. My ex-husband has not paid child support consistently in 2 years, however the back support amount is over $100K. The judge in our county will not charge him as the judge did in this case. My opinion is those that work hard to avoid paying child support should sit in prison. Why should they be allowed to roam the street freely and the single parent struggles to provide for the children.
