CBS 6 News
One of two vicious dogs threatening an Albany County community has been put down -- but the other still appears to be on the loose, and police are beginning to get suspicious.

Altamont Police Chief Tony Salerno says after a week of no sightings, police got a call that one of the dogs that killed two cats last week -- a female pitbull -- was chasing a jogger just off the Main St. in the village.

Police eventually cornered the dog in the woods, where they were forced to put her down after they say she turned on them.

"It's very suspicious because for one week we didn't have any positive sighting, and then today we have sighting," said Chief Salerno. "So it leads me to believe -- why is this occurring, and why are these dogs not being seen and then they appear?"

Asked if he thought the dogs are purposely being let loose, Chief Salerno responded, "I'm not going to say that because I can't substantiate it, but I think it's an avenue that we're looking at."

The chief said in addition to the dogs' one-week disappearance, other things don't add up. Example? The dogs had collars on last week, but this time, there were no collars to be found.

Animal experts have also said the dogs -- a male and a female -- would not split up on their own. Yesterday, however, the female dog was alone.

Sounds weird. Was this incident even in the village? Why was a civilian public safety commissioner even handling a police call?

Look at his latest hire. Another example of how things really work. Why is the public safety commisiioner driving a police car and wearing a uniform. He is a civilian not a police officer....

Helwig was later criticized in an internal audit by Capital OTB for improper payroll practices, including allegations he signed off on sick time for his son Jason, who worked for his father at Capital OTB, for days the younger Helwig also worked for his father as a Coxsackie police officer.

Police officer? For argument sake lets say we agree with that. So please explain why there is the title of public safety commissioner and not chief of police. So you are also telling us that the commissioner of public safety is a sworn police officer and works a forty hour work week. Wouldn't that make him a full time police officer. Saving money by answering calls. The budget has increased and so has the the salaries. So please explain

The reason why we be able to maintain safe community, with crime around us , the Altamont Police Department, does the job, and bad people known if they come to altamont the police will do there job not like other area. Why is it when our Sub-Way was Burglarized, they found out who did and arrested him, but when other other burglary happen out side the village, the other police department can't find out who did. like home invasion in guilderland center , was reported in Times Union..

So what your saying is that the Altamont Police are superior to the other local police agencies. That is a joke right? Lets look at the thousands of cases a year that are handled by the Guilderland Police, Albany Count Sheriff's, and New York State Police. If they had one Burglary a year maybe they would have a %100 rate of solving crimes. Let's examine the amount of actual Police experience each officer has. Each officer except one or two has full time police experience. People coming to Altamont are not scared of the police they just know better not speed on 146, 158, etc.. People are only worried about getting.

Why did the village board hire an officer that was let go by coxsackie police and NYS OTB? Politics? Why does the fair hire private security for fair season?

wasnt the officer that was let go. you people have to realize there is no community that is safe. you want to loose your local police you loose the money in the tickets and arrests they do. besides it may take 25 mins to get to your house when you need them. also they all went thru the same academy and know how to do same the job

If Wayne Bennett is the Public Safety Commissioner for the city of Schenectady why does he not patrol the streets or go on police calls. Disregard that question. He is not a police officer, he is a civilian.

Don't you know that in order to be a police chief you have to first pass a civil service test

Maybe being a Sergeant or even an investigator first wold help. How do you become a boss without having supervisor training?

First off, let me just say that Salerno is a large bag of douche. I can't stand Loser Boy and neither could any of his "co-workers" in Albany. He was never an Investigator when he retired from there. He was a DESK COP assigned to the traffic safety division of the Albany Police Department. He was lucky if he was allowed to touch a police car after the b.s. he pulled while letting his K9 lose into a crowd.... there are a lot of other issues but that’s another topic...

As for the title of Public Safety Commissioner, that is an appointed position, not a civil service position. It was created specifically for Retired Commissioner Robert Coleman (another douche bag). It was created because according to DCJS, Coleman's police certification expired in 1998. Therefore, he can not be in a police position, which he wasn't. He simply ran the administrative end of the PD such as, scheduling and budget. As for Salerno being appointed as Commissioner as opposed to Chief, the title of Commissioner can be filled by anybody the board appoints. If they are certified cops, which Salerno is, then it becomes a police position, if you’re not like Coleman, then it becomes a civilian position. The Chiefs title comes along with a lot more protection such as the International Association of Police Chief’s, and civil service protection. The original plan was to appoint a police chief. It originally was going to be Schoharie Police Chief Harold Orelupp who was recommended to the job by Retired Chief George Pratt. But then, Salerno allegedly donated a whole boat load of money to the Gay Rights Groups, which sat very well with the current Mayor.(Not that there is anything wrong with that)…. The board just decided to keep the “Commissioner” position because they can hire or fire the Commissioner at anytime. But be advised Village Board: Salerno is running around at political fundraisers in Schenectady county telling people he doesn’t even know that he is “in the running to be the next Chief of Albany Police” HAHA What a joke! That will never happen!
