Daughter felt it, oldest son felt it, I did not, but I sure felt the aftershock that came through a little after 10:00 a.m.

I was writing a short article for another news service about the early morning quake when the mid-morning aftershock hit. Fifty years old and never felt one before. I'm going to re-think a trip to California.

I am originally from Effingham but havent lived there since I was a kid. I am a missionary in Chile now. I am assuming from the comments that the earthquake was felt fairly strongly in Effingham as well? Dont remember having any when I lived there, but I do remember my parents maybe talking about it. Only about an hours drive from West Salem Illinois I believe. Just a little curious....the news about it traveled all the way down here to South America....where I might add earthquakes are common.....havent felt one yet....guess I am lucky....be thinking of you guys if I wake up and the bed is shaking!!

Yes, West Salem is about an hour south and little east of here, maybe a little more. It is near Evansville, Indiana.

Dear Eric, Let me tell you a little about the earthquake we reside here in Louisville just south of Effingham on Rt 45. The first earthquake that hit on the 18th of April had a loud noise. At first when I awoke because of the noise I thought a semi had run off the road and into our home because I was throw into the air off our bed just a few inches. The ground shook in an up-down motion. All the aftershocks that came in the following days had a back and forth movement, but no noise. After each aftershock the smell of gas in the air was sickening. None the less it was very amazing to live through!

How long have you been in Chile? I had once thought of going to school down there, but at the time the violence had escalated so I declined to go.
