How does everyone feel about the possibility of repealing home rule next April?

I think it would be great to repeal home rule. I have big time buyers remorse. Even though some of the trust was well placed(Karen and Don) I didn't expect the betrayal of Stephens and the rest of the Murawski clan that remains. I blame myself also. I bought into the home rule will give us more expediant change and control. It only gave a few control over our tax payer dollars. Did we really need these new water meters, did we need to hire the useless town lawyer and give him benefits, did we need remodeling at village hall to make these special new employees of the town feel more at home, do we need a town manager, Oh, I thought that was the mayors job. Or should we eliminate the mayor and keep the town manager.(sarcasm?) Now I am trying to figure out why Stephens wanted to be mayor. He makes around $110,000 a year as a teacher with full benefits that is also killing us in property taxes. I went with and believed what we were told about the tax increases and home rule it sounded logical at the time. I should have gone with my first gut instinct. So yes I blame myself for believing that there would be a difference. So how do we repeal home rule? Any ideas?

Not sure but I heard there is a quiet operation going on now by a group of people considering it.

I haven't responded to any topics in over a year. So far most of what I warned every one on this site about home rule is coming true. Home rule did nothing but give Stephens and his crew free reign.
Trust me, our town lawyer is getting a nice new office at our expnese and he more than likely will be running his practice out of the village rent free. Why does this useless lawyer need his own private secretary? Is he defending that many cases on the behalf of this village?
I read a while back where some one asked if home rule was the cause of the tax increases. I believe it was one of the warrens who supported home rule responded no. The hell it didn't. Shortly after home rule went into place our taxes were raised to highest amount Stephens and his crew were allowed to.
In case any one has not noticed, all of the bonds taken out don't have to be put on a referendum. Credit that to your home rule. You don't think the taxes were raised to cover the new Bonds? This village is in the area of $13 million in the hole. Nice job Terry. Oh wait, we have nicely paved roads in parts of Midlo. What happened to running out all of the undesireables as promised?

I'll have to respectfully disagree with many of you. Rather than repealing Home Rule, I think we should focus our energies into putting the right people in place to manage our village. Home Rule allows us to have control over our own village. The alternative of that is to that is to have Springfield politicians running OUR show. Which do you prefer?

You're right Maxine. We need a few good candidates though before we can do that.

I am not in favor of repealing home rule either. I believe it has the ability to do some good things. It allows us the tool of crime free housing which is a tool used by the police. I would not want to take tools away from them.

I also am not in favor of repealing homerule. The hiring of the lawyer and town manager is not because of home rule. We as a village voted to raise our taxes ourselves, the biggest increase came the county, not our village. Last number I heard was almost 60 people have been evicted because of the safe housing ordinance. This would not have happened except for home rule. I belive that the closer power is to the average citizen the better. Just remember that the power that we brought back to our village was once controled by the idiots in Springfield. Do you really think those people even know where we are, let alone what we care about?

What is actually being seen as damage that has been done by the home rule? The biggest complaint I've seen is the 3 cent a gallon tax on gasoline which hasn't effected the cost of gas really.

First of all, NO we as a village did not vote to raise the taxes many opposed it. The tax hike was pushed though so everyone who workes for the town coiuld receive a raise. Not to mention adding additonal people to the payroll to just about every department.

Hiring a town manager really? How about as a consultant to the village instead. And whe need a town lawyer for what? Can anyone inform us to how much he is on the payroll or? You can't tell me the increase in our taxes didn't help foot those bills.

People of this village did nothing to educate themselves on the truths of Home Rule. Our current wise men running this village used the rouse of crime free housing to get home rule through. You don't need home rule to become a crime free housing village.

First of all, YES we as a village did vote to raise the taxes AND many opposed it. Obviously the majority did not. No one claimed it was a unanimous vote. And yes some of the departments were very short staffed and the increase in income allowed those positions to be filled. The PD was down 4 people at one time. You make some good points and I agree with some of it but you don't need to obscure the facts to do it.

The lawyers pay has been openly discussed here before and it is available openly.

And many of the people of the village educated themselves to the truths of Home Rule. I know many that researched it and spent a lot of time discussing it.

Well, some people live in a simple, black and white world don't they?

All I can say is Ditto, and that you stole my thunder:) Apparently, some can't discern between bad laws and bad politicians. Terry Stephens may not be our answer for mayor of this village, but what does that have to do with Home Rule? Honestly, I suspect there is a certain element who will never support home rule.

For me, Terry was the best choice in the last election. There have been (in my opinion) some bad decisions made. Basically I have 3 that I am strongly against. The hiring of the lawyer is the one I feel strongest about. I believe he should be tarred and feathered and ran out of town just for what he's put this town through. It's wrong and he should be the first person to take responsibility for it.
But at 57 years old I've figured out that I shouldn't expect to agree with every decision a politician makes. The largest amount of what's been done I believe has been in the best interest of the village. I don't see anyone jumping up and saying that they have all the answers. And as I've said before, anybody that says that he wants that job should be disqualified for lack of common sense.
When it comes time for the next election I'll look at all the candidates and make a decision just like I did when I voted for Terry.

I think it's been going down for a long time, probably longer than most people realize, but it has picked up speed in the last few years. I think unemployment and the economy has more to do with that than our politicians though.
And if I might clarify, it's the lawyer himself I think should be tarred and feathered. I realize Terry was a big part of putting it through but I think the lawyer needs to take responsibility himself for this whole mess from the moment he took the job originally.

It worked for me when I took the space out so maybe this one will work better.
