Phillipsburg to lay off 45 teachers to balance budget

The Phillipsburg School District will lay off 64 employees, including 45 teachers, to help balance the 2008-09 budget.

Let me guess...the teachers at the top of the chart had "opinions" and weren't the best little P'burg puppets they could be, right? Isn't that how it works MJ and Trox?

I am glad that at least one School Board understands reality. We all have had to "tighten our belts" and schools should be no exception.

Also, the layoffs seem to span across a reasonable number of job types; from teachers to supervisors to support staffers. So, no one category felt all the pain, and no one category was exempt.

A sad day? you got to be kidding me. It is about time a school board does the right thing for the tax payers. These cry-baby teachers just want more and more. The nurse of this area have to pay towards their health care and have more responsibility than a over-paid baby sitter.

It's about time a schoolboard took some fiscal responsibility and did right by it's taxpayers! I do feel for those laid off though, a few years ago I was laid off by Wood Dining Services when they were sold to Sodexho and our jobs were moved to Buffalo so I know what you'll go through.

the other sad part of this is rgey elimiated arts and industrial technology. Those industrial technology classes are the only thing many of the P-burg kids had to help them have any type of skill set to get a job after graduation. Now we have taken that away from them. The schools only focus and had only ever been on those with a P-burg family name who plays sports and sits in college and honor classes.

Teachers are not over-paid baby sitters. It is a hard job to do with the pressures of testing, parents, administrators...

I agree they should pay into their healthcare, no questions asked. However never question what a teacher does, it isn't a piece of cake job that many people seem to think it is. Oh and remember, teachers are taxpayers too.

Gee maybe they should go back to 40 kids in a class room then they could cut more teachers,and cut funding for sports programs. Look at all the money that would be saved. Oh then the M.F.W.I.C. would vote themselves a big fat raise and a BONE US.

Collective bargaining does nothing more than increase costs. Instead of a pay scaled based upon measured performance and results, unionization promotes institutionalized mediocrity that benefits those at the bottom of the skill scales and the union collecting dues.

It's a tough sell to those on the teet though. They fight tooth and nail for the "right" to be represented.

Thankfully, I negotiate my own salary and perks through a continued regiment of formal and self-education.

No union for me.
