Excuse me, but why the special treatment for a felon hit and run driver who killed a man in his vehicle when it caught fire after being hit by the felon driving 80 mph and running a red light.... Why the special treatment for this felon? God Bless the homeless man who died and may peace be with his family. I think the judge needs to rethink the sentencing.

No wonder why people continue to commit crimes. They are just given slaps on the wrist, or released without bail. I feel bad for the family of the victim.

Because of our less than adequate court system this guy will probalby get away with murder.
My prayers go out to Sheila Metzger Cunha and her family. Keep up the fight and make sure he pays for what he did.

The family has a point ... This sweetheart deal for the defendant is outrageous. Cooley is up for election, please ask him if it will be the DA's policy in future to let drunk drivers with serious past criminal histories off without bail... how long will it be until this guy (or another) flees ???

This is right up there with the OC judge that did not immediately remand a convicted child molester to jail, giving him 30 days to get 'his affairs in order'... predictably the convicted defendant skipped out to Mexico, meanwhile making harassing calls to the victims...!!!

This is just so wrong. I don't even know where to start...how many crimes does this man have to committ before the legal system wakes up? Maybe a prosecutor needs to have a family member hurt and then this guy will see jail time.

It was a special deal for the defense attorney not the defendant. Not even a bad DA would give the defendant a break like this especially after he said he wouldn't. But the defense attorney must have some real pull in Carson - be sure to use him if you ever get in trouble there!

The prosecutor should join LA's city attorney's office. They sit around and let the LA Times do their work for them. This guy sounds like he would fit right in. Another disgrace in the corrupt legal system we have.

Our society, including the legal system, does not place equal value on all human lives. We value money and status above all. If this guy had killed a police officer, judge, or ADA in the same manner I would bet anything he would be UNDER the jail at the moment. Leaving a man to burn to death in a cowardly effort to save one's own skin... and he is released on his own recognizance??????????

If this guy harms someone else while out on (no) bail I hope the Court and DA's will be able to live with themselves and somehow justify their actions, which at first blush seem indefensible.
