The beginning to a solution to the problem of reversing the excesses we see in Long Island school systems is to vote NO for every budget and when the second vote rolls around - a clear symptom of the corruption that helps perpetuate the excesses - vote NO, again. And, keep voting NO for every incumbent on every school board. This is the only recourse open to the beleagured taxpayer to halt the spiraling costs of education and to reverse them. There is strength in numbers.

This editorial is actually way to mild. We don't see the "appearance" of a fix, we see UNBELIEVABLE IN-YOUR-FACE Corruption in every district. It all needs to be dismantled but these people won't give up their gravy train easily.
Step one should be NO RELATIVES ON PAYROLLS.

the only way to stop the bloated administrative salaries is a mass consolidation of school districts. why we need to have so many districts in suffolk county is a mystery to me but don't expect anything to change. the only remedy to stem rising school taxes will remain moving off long island.

Enough, until they consolidate school and stop this madness of hundreds of disparate school districts all loaded with top heavy admins I will vote NO, my taxes will only go down if the entire system is overhauled and the kids we educate have to move off the island as it is, so in reality this is for THEM

I, honestly, hated Mario Cuomo -- "government of Cuomo, by Cuomo, for Cuomo." I am, however, willing to give the son, Andrew, a pass for now. "Good job, on this Andrew--stay focused on American Citizens." And remember, "American Citizens want an end of this protective state for ILLEGAL ALIENS." Clean up the ILLEGAL ALIEN problem in this state, as well -- and you just MIGHT get my vote!

The Uniondale budget calls for a 4.74% increase despite a huge increase in state aid. A defeated budget lands a 4.49% increase. Looks like you only have a choice to be reamed with or without grease.

When the people rise it won't be pretty.

Great point. We all need to vote no for our children. I know it seems like this is a waste taking in to account that the contingency budgets are almost as big as the regular budgets, but regardless a no vote sends a message that we will not take this anymore.

Where was Tom DiNapoli all of this time? Where was "Mr. Education" for all these decades of "public service?"

And what is going to happen to the NYS Employee Retirement System who allowed the lawyers to get pensions? Nothing? No punishment for them?

And what is going to happen to NYS Education Dept who approved all the waivers for the retirees to return to work? Nothing? No punishment for them?

If either of these systems had done their jobs, we wouldn't be seeing these abuses of our tax money now. Just say NO and it doesn't go through. Simple.

So I'd like to see Mr. Cuomo do something about that as well, we haven't heard a thing yet.

Good question, where is Mr. DiNapoli on this matter, as well as on the private contractors getting public pension and health benefits dole?

He is awfully quiet, and must be in hiding. Has he looked the other way while knowing all this was prevalent in good ole Long Island?

No public school student ever learned anything from an administrator. Students learn from their teachers.

On Long Island and elsewhere, public school administrators should not be paid twice (or more) what a talented, experienced teacher in the classroom is paid.

(I am neither a teacher nor an administrator.)

Simple fix. The legislature should propose legislation, and the governor should sign it making it illegal to be retired from a public agency and to work for any public agency and draw a salary. The same should apply to those administrators work are employed through "consulting" firms to do principalships and to be Supt's. Either you are retired or you're not...period.

Most school budgets call for an increase of 2 -3 times the rate of inflation.(Year in and year out) Add that to the cost of gas and food and one can see how irresponsible and out of control these "boards" are.

Vote NO, there is no other way.

We don't live in the 1950's anymore...move the retirement age to 62 for cops, teachers and other government employees..

They work no harder than any other citizen. Indeed, an argument can be made that they work less hard and less hours.

The justification that there are no qualified replacements for these double dippers is surely laughable. With some 7.5 million people living on Long Island I am sure that there is someone just as or better qualified individual available (and probably for much much less!)

Where are the #2 & 3 people in their organizations? If thay can't step up to the plate at a moments notice they should be fired immediately.

If those individuals responsible for the hiring decision of these double dippers did not expect them to retire and take advantage of the faulty system they should surely be fired likewise as they are guilty of gross negligence.

If there is no recourse but to rehire an an individual they should certainly be paid no more than the difference between what they had earned less their pension benefit

As to school administrators, not only the double dippers, for what they are paid they should be contractually obligated to bring in a couple of million per year in endowment funds to their district so as to justify their excessive salaries. At least that would establish a performance standard that could be easily measured as well as partially offsetting the cost to the taxpayers.

I agree totally. they are overpaid, underworked and get to retire at least twice in their careers. i am tired of my taxes paying people for doing less than I am expected to at work.

The only reason why the school districts on Long Island are not consolidated is racism-pure and simple. Garden City does not want to join with Hempstead, etc., etc. Until the school districts are consolidated, as is the case in Virginia with its top drawer schools, Long Islanders will continue paying incredible taxes for medocore product. Check the salaries and the numbers of administrators, consultants, clericals and custodial workers in any district. I know Directors of Facilities who worked up from labor jobs with no education who are making over $110,000. Check the roster in Great Neck. I know a Maintenance Supervisor there earning six figures.

<quoted text>
Well put - this is definately UNBELIEVABLE IN-YOUR-FACE CORRUPTION. The civil service system has sucked the life out of the non-playing public. Two and three persons from the same family (Hunderfords) sucking up money from one departmebnt to the next. Yet a person can't get a job in the system unless they affiliate with the party in charge (campaign, donate money). The idea that these are the only people qualified to do the job is preposterous. Families like the Reilly's and the DeRiggi's from Glen Cove have had ENTIRE FAMILIES ON THE PAYROLL AT HIGH SALARIED JOBS for decades. Organized crime is what it is folks. And good luck getting any respect-had to go down to Oyster Bay Clerk to get a permit ($80 to park my car at the railroad station so I can go to work in NYC to earn enough to pay the taxes) and the old hag behind the counter at her desk didn't even have the courtesy to step up to the counter to service my application - shouting across the office - "what's your name" "where do you live" "you can't do this" "you're not eligible for that" "you need a utility bill to prove who you are" These people all looked like wrecked Chevys to me and yet they are making very decent incomes that I'd be glad to have a crack at.......

Would love to check the roster of who makes what - how is this done?
