Island's move to energy efficiency stops at SUVs

Long Islanders have switched to energy-efficient lightbulbs and adjusted their thermostats, but the region's nascent green revolution may stop in the driveway.

Most believe global warming won't effect them in their lifetime, eh? Well, I guess they are concnerned about their kids college funds but give a rats ass about their quality of environmental living if they are unwiling to stio driving gas guzzlers. The good news is - the sale of SUVs is down and this is causing the car comapnies to put a lot of effort into creating SUVs that run more fuel efficient.

"But one sacrifice many Long Island drivers appear unwilling to make is swapping a bigger vehicle for a more fuel-efficient model."

How about obeying the speed limit?

Generally, most people won't alter their driving choices until gas hits $6-7. Then they will, you'll see. They may be dumb, but they're not stupid. This survey's a bit off anyway, here I've got this SUV I just paid 40K for, that's now worth about 20K. What am I supposed to do with it, abandon it on the side of the road and go buy a Honda? When the time comes, people will do what they have to do, not before.

How about putting a lid on GREED which seems to be real cause of the price issue. Stop allowing "green" morons from allowing the US to drill for Oil especially when we know there is plenty and other countries are drilling for it in the same areas.

And to the SUV owner, have no fear the SUV hybrids are here.

The color green has been tarnished all too quickly by corporate greed.

To the people advocating we drill for oil. OK, we do that, then what? Everyone says China and India's economy is to blame. OK...let's say it is.

I'm a big oil tycoon who struck black gold in the Gulf. Am I going to sell it to Joe American driving and SUV and producing SQUAT. Or Ching Chang who's working 20 hours a week and has money to BURN in their wild crazy growing economy? Uhhhhduhhhh....but as an oil tycoon, I care about patriotism first, and America second. Right?

If, as Americans, we cannot innovate to solve the energy problem (energy problem = only so much oil, then what?) we are screwed. The only thing we produce these days is Brittney Spears paparazzi news. That won't last forever, either.

Rational arguments pertaining to excessive fuel use do not penetrate the conciousness of American society because the reason is based in a larger irrationality. It is result of synthetic identity construction that demands privilege to compensate for prevailing inadequadecy and fear. Look at ANY hummer operator and this is self evident. Large SUVs operated by single passenger women are another. These people are terrified of something and it is pretty obvious it is the contradiction between the larger reality and the self absorption that dominates their lives. These are ill people not fools or jackasses. Their recovery, however, is unlikely in a low education-high propaganda system that "sells" the this path to "salvation"!.

I don't drive an SUV, but it's unrealistic to think that you're going to take an SUV that's maybe only 3-4 years old, that isn't fully depreciated and just dump it for a more fuel-efficient car just because of the price of gasoline. Economically, this only makes sense if gasoline gets up far higher than it is. If you bought a $35k SUV, and you can get $15k for it, but then you have to lay out $20k for a new car...you do the math. You just keep paying for gasoline instead.

You rambling just like "nutjob". The only "ill" people are those who believe we are doomed because of the SUV.

I have two SUV's.

One as a work vehicle for the farm, and the other gets me from long island to bridgewater with equipment, two dogs, children, a wife and a mother.

I would need three small cars to do that, and the gas costs would be the same.

Perhaps if people, instead of judging your neighbors, judged yourself only.

It takes more gas to transport a 220 pound man than it does to transport a 125 lb man.

I'll sell my SUV's when you big, energy wasting fat people stop eating.

Mr SUV Owner, you're not the one we're talking about. Say there were 1 million SUVs on LI,(to pick a # out of the air), there are probably 15 who really need one. The rest are the cute little thing driving herself to the mall in her Ford Excursion. And she isn't going to change a thing until gas hits $6. And it will.

Right on the $ SUV!!! There was a study done recently that said if the majority of Americans would just get down to the weight they should be, there would be a boost to the US economy of almost $400 billion dollars! Not to mention easing the strain on our health care system. Oops gotta go - just pulling up the order window in my GMC Yukon!!!

You are forgetting that SUVs are a status symbol on LI! Do you think LI people are going to be happy driving around in a puny rice box?
