Send your poor diversity-minded liberal kiddies to Uniondale. The buzz of police choppers and the sight of horse cops several times a year when the high school lets out should be a gratifying experience. The "diversity" here does a lot of shooting, drugging, robbing, and knifing but why should anybody be deprived of the grand mosaic of multiculturalism?

I strongly disagree with the comments made on this board. I am white and I think mixing the races is very important. People of all colors and cultures have a right to a quality education.

The fact of the matter is that people of color all across Long Island are not getting a high quality of education, and it is because their districts lack the resources that white districts have.

This also benefits white people, which is one of the points made in her editorial. Whites have much to gain from coming into contact with minorities. It is not a coincidence that interracial dating is on the rise, and I think it's very beautiful!

So why dont you pick your lilly white kid up and move to a town that has more folk of color?

I'm not in the lwast saying I care who my neighbor is, but nor do I need to subsizide anyone either.

If, as a young white professional, cant afford to live in a middle class black neighborhood should they pay for my kid? My home?

Would they be somehow racist if they wanted to keep their hard earned money?

See I love the idea you present, however you never seem to offer to pay for any of them yourself.

Agree with your point on interracial dating- it's great and who cares who love who.

So your essentially saying even though the property taxes are far higher in so called white districts, they should have their tax money sent to schools outside that district?

Say smithtown taxes should fund brentood HS?

Lets say the economic conditions change, would brentwood happily pay for northport kids? I think not, and rightfully so..

If you want it, pay for it.

That will never happen.
Of course not. The results would debunk the myth that you need to keep pouring money into a school district to get better results.
On another note, in my district we did away with grouping by ability, or tracking. The thought process was, if the weaker academic students are with the better students, the weaker student will somehow perform better due to being around the better students. Needless to say, that hasn't happened. If anything the weaker students have had a negative impact on the whole class. One of the reasons they are weak students is due to behavior problems. I spend more time with discipline than actual teaching.
Tracking became a racial issue in my district, so it was quickly done away with.

Hey Jenna I grew up in Levittown, all white. My father was accepting of all races, and my mother is religious. I wasn't harmed. Let's face it, Blacks don't want to live with whites, So instead of whining about how lousy it was growing up in an all white neighborhood, be thankful you didn't go to school in Wyandanch, or any of the other crappy schools on Long Island. And if you are so concerned about your kids lack of contact with people of color, move to East New York.
well said and a sure fire way to quiet a limo liberal, as they will never risk their own arse for anything.

the point many posters have made is that throwing $$ at a problem doesn't necessarily cure it. there are many, many reasons for why not everyone is getting a quality education--beginning with home environment and the high percentage of never married, single parent families.

Every "forced diversity" program has failed miserably. Need proof? Read about the great Kansas City experiment. Inner city schools were built with state of the are facilities. No expenses were spared, even for aftershool activities. The results? Test scores and grades continued DECLINING. Why? Because all the money in the world can't get kids to take their schoolwork seriously, have parental involvement, do homework and fight peer pressure to "under-achieve". This is cultural, not monetary. All the greenbacks in the world won't fix this problem until certain "cultures" embrace education and achievement.
Very well stated.

As a middle school teacher in a predominantly white district, I'd have to add that segregation occurs within the schools. The children segregate themselves. The white children form cliques based on their religions. The Korean, Japanese, and Chinese students eat lunch at one table, while the other nonwhite students (Pakistani, Indian, Bengali) have a table of their own. One might say that people feel more comfortable with others who share their culture, but since when are all Asian or all Middle Eastern cultures the same? And where does that leave an adopted nonwhite child of white parents? Which clique will embrace that child? How do children learn to be so exclusive? Where do they learn that the "other" is to be feared or avoided? These children do not behave in an overtly racist way; instead, they act as if the others do not exist. There are no easy answers here.

I recently reminded a group of students that when they go off to college, they will meet and interact with people of races that are not represented in our school. Their response? "No we won't. We're going to GOOD colleges."

Remember, diversity is a business. Many of those who have an interest in the business want to continue racial hostility among the races.

The key is equal outcome not equal opportunity. This is the definition of quotas or the old term, affirmative action.

Equality is giving everyone a chance to succeed. It is then up to each individual to grab the American Dream.

"Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will." As a Middle School teacher in a school district that once was almost all white and now has become majority black, I have watched as many white kids are not sure what they identify with. Many white kids wear their pants hanging down of their rear ends, listen to rap, and try to talk in a "ghetto" vernacular. Personally I think white kids don't have an identity. Can anyone figure out why?

Libtard, anti-white Christian NEWSDAY wonders why its circulation numbers are in the toilet? It's because they insist on publishing racist, ignorant, a$$ backwards tripe such as this which insults the majority of legal resident Long Islanders!

I don't understand Kern-Rugile's grievance. If she's so upset living in a great community with terrific neighbors, who just happen to be white, then why doesn't she do herself and her poor segregated child a favor and move into a nice "multicultural" area like New Casse or Hempstead? I'm sure they would be much happier living there than in that awful white-majority town.

Funny how we never hear from blacks complaining about living in an black-majority town or asians complaining that there aren't enough hispanics living in their Chinatown. Enough with the PC b.s.! People should be able to live where they want without some ignoramous telling them that it's "wrong" to want to live with people who are like yourself. This is just human nature and it's not racist.

Jenna Kern-Rugile and Newsday need a lesson in COMMON SENSE.

The problem with common sense is that it's no longer common!

I would tend to say Long Island is more segregated by socioeconomic status than racism. If you can afford it, you live in a nicer town. If you can't, then you don't. Isn't that an effect of capitalism, not racism?
Your right but the way things are going the pin heads who can afford it are going to be few and none. Long Island school districts need to change their ways fast!

when i went to school it was all white. we had one black family in the district. ironically, because i was raised in my "white bread" neighborhood, i was never exposed to racism, i never even thought about it, it wasn't an issue. people were just people. so now as an adult, i don't really think in terms of what seperates us, or what makes us different based on stereotypes, i just take each person i meet for who they are, not what they are. perhaps i'm not the norm, but i don't feel deprived or damaged by it at all.

I too attended a school that was 90+% white back in the 1950s - Franklin Street School in Hempstead. My graduating class at Hempstead High was the last that had a majority of caucasions in it. After the invasion of "diversity", the schools went into the sewer, the crime rate soared, and Hempstead turned into a massive third-world ghetto. The Limo Libs should be more careful about what they dream about. My experience with "diversity" is that it makes you a crime target and destroys your neighborhood. Deep down in your Liberal shorts you know I'm right.
