I am no longer shocked by any stories in the news...it is very clear everything will get worse before it gets better and this is no exception.

I can't help but think that if prisoners are out of prison, out from behind bars and barbed wire, why aren't they hooked up with an ankle bracelet so they can be tracked?

Usually at a Level I facility prisoners "apply" for jobs in which they make a little amount of money (usually about 75 cents to $1 per day) in which they can spend at the prisoner store or it's used to pay off some of their debt on the outside world. Anyhow, these prisoners are given jobs to help them learn responsibility once they get back to the outside world. Prisoners are normally watched by staff while doing their work. I agree there should be something they should wear while on work detail if they are OUTSIDE of the razor wire area...however, because of the budget crisis, that simply cannot happen. Hopefully this will never happen at the Facility I work at!

More than likely Wendy, there is at least one plot to escape from your facility! Just like the one at ICMH a couple of years ago! They never stop plotting! Such a moron! Doesnt he realize he will get caught? Then what? He will have a longer sentence..18 & already a wasted life! They will catch up to him sooner or later. Nothing like living life always looking over your shoulder!

There actually were a couple of escape plots and prison takeovers that were planned before...but both were found out ahead of time and halted. Thank god for prison "snitches" huh?

Prisoner Escapes from Mid-Michigan
A Level I prisoner, Laytwan Jackson, escaped from a Ground Maintenance Detail just after 9 a.m. this morning. At the time of print, police are still searching for him and area schools are on lock-down. Jackson, who is serving 2-15 years for 1st and 2nd degree Home Invasion, has been at Mid-Michigan since April. At the time of his escape, Jackson was being monitored by NON-SECURITY staff. The Security Custody officer position that supervised the maintenance detail was cut by the MDOC approximately 8 months ago.

I live just down the road from the prison and I was kind of scared when I heard this because I have a 2 1/2 year old son.

If they didn't waste so much money locking up pot smokers, maybe they could afford to pay someone to guard a person convicted of HOME INVASION!

This is what happens when they cut positions. This was a maned position before they said that the prisoners dont need to be watched by c/o so they did away with it. That left it to be the responsibility of the non custady staff. If you worked at a prison like i do you would know that a prisoner has more writes and benifits than a person working in the world but true it is over i shut the cell door when he was put in segragation so he is home now.

I know exactly what you mean about them cutting positions! Now they are talking about privatizing certain jobs...that would be smart (insert sarcasm here)! Now more NON-custody staff would be in charge of prisoners! Prisoners do have MANY rights in prison...but I don't believe they have more rights than regular citizens. It's pretty demeaning to have to ask for a roll of TP, or to be given so many rules and regulations. However, it's our job to teach them what is going to be expected of them on the outside of the walls. I'm glad to hear he was found, that he is safe, the community is safe, and that he is in Seg. I'm sure he will definitely be re-classified now and be sent to one of the higher level facilities. Don't send him to OTF or DRF please! LOL
