If addiction isn't an illness, how can a man be told if he takes another drink, he may die. Then he drinks anyway. He certainly isnt well. Also, a man that is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different results each time is very sick. Addicts think this time they will be ok, but that end up in jail, hospital, insane asylum, or treatment, and even die. They have a thinking problem when they are actively using

Addiction is a disease. It's well documented in medicine, though there are always people who know better, without any such sissy stuff as evidence. Sure there are things you can do to get better - there's an element of choice. There are things you can do about high blood pressure to make it better - there's an element of choice there too, which doesn't mean high blood pressure isn't a disease. You can't catch brain tumors from a dirty toilet seat and diabetes isn't contagious - that doesn't mean they aren't diseases. The people who want to pretend it's such a simple thing seem to me to be part of the problem.

Clayton Bigsby, you are ignorant. Not a contagious disease. Diabetes isn't contagious. Cancer is contagious. Drug addiction and alcoholism is inherited genetically. Do some research and learn something. Some people can have a drink and quit. Some can have a drink and end up drunk and piss all over themselves and lose total control. These folks are sick.

crack addict you r smokin crack. never seen anybody drink 1 drink and piss theirself. and addiction is not inherited it is a process of getting your body rely on something.( you usually must subject your body to the substance NUMEROUS times to get your body addicted to it). Really 90% or more of addicts did what ever they are addicted too for a while because they ENJOYED it at the time and messed around and got their body addicted to it. with the exception of newborns born addicted to their mothers choice of drug because she used while pregnant. Nobody other than these poor babys are born addicted to pills ,alcohol, or crack so quit even trying to compare these addicts to the unfortunate people that get cancer or come down with a REAL disease. Not even close to be the same. Hell i am addicted to tobacco myself but i aint gonna blame it on my genetics its my fault i enjoyed dipping because of the way it calmed me down and relaxed me. played with it long enough and now it b hard to quit. Whos fault??? gonna man up now MINE

Addiction is not a disease. That's assinine. I've been around plenty of addicts and not once has it been contageous and jumped on me. All this is excuses for people to use for being addicted or have been addicted. Its mind over matter. Nobody put a gun to your head and got your addiction started. It was a choice you made. It wasn't a disease you got from a dirty toilet or a classroom full of kids. Its not an illness you picked up from a crowd. Its a choice. Until you can man up and admit that you'll never be fully cured.
u r IGNORANT.....disease doesn't "jump" on u, that is an INFECTION!! if you are going to comment be smart about it!!

So, "it's a choice", stop taking them today and see what happens. If you have been taking Lorcets for 2 years you are dependant on them. They are not mean't for long term use. Read the paperwork that comes with your script. Fool

I went to see my doctor this week. I had about a ten minute wait before he came in to see me. I was weighed, Blood Pressure checked, then Dr. Bagley listened to my heart and lungs. He checked my circulation by checking my pulse in my wrists, legs, and carotid. Then he diagnosed my problem and gave me a prescription to help me with my sinus issues. All this was completed and I was on my way within a few minutes. Not an all day event, endless tests, and repeat visits. I am an addict, so he is careful to prescribe medication that will not lead me to relapse. I have seen Dr. Carter when Dr. Bagley is out. I tell him the moment he walks into the room, "I am a recovering addict". This helps him decide upon my course of treatment. I do wish the hospital would find a way to educate their E.R. physicians on addiction protocol. Dr. Bagley is a valuable resource for practical, hands on treatment. I know that he will not abandon his patients that relapse, whether it be addiction, diabetes, or hypertension. He will go over their treatment and release them to go out there and try again. Bless him and his staff.

Does Dr. Bagley accept new patients? I need help with my daughter. She is a good girl that has got involved with something she can not let go of. We have tried our minister and threats of sending her off. We do not have the money to send her off for help. I am at the end of my rope. I tried to call his office a few minutes ago, but they are closed Friday afternoon. If anyone knows if he is taking new patients, please post. Thank you.

Jane Doe, I am fairly certain Dr. Bagley is taking new patients. I am seeing him now under very similar circumstances. Just be sure that when you call you explain your daughter's situation to the nurse/receptionist. Dr. Bagley is so understanding and very open with his patients in recovery. He knows because he has been there and he will tell you that. And to "Average Joe", good luck with your continued recovery and I admire your openess with other physicians you see in explaining where you are coming from.

Dr. Bagley will help her. Also, Glenn Moore at Dr. Deens Office is a recovering adddict and helps us too. I suggest you consider long term treatment for you daughter. If she is addicted to opiates (pain med), I suggest you look in to getting her on Suboxone. Miracle drug for patiens addicted to painkillers.

I don't think it's a disease, its a choice. If it was a disease then people would try to get checks for it. I am not a addict. But I was married to one for years. I had to keep the check book and any money from him, but he would always go to mama and daddy and they would give him money. I would try to talk to them about it and they new he was using drugs but still gave him the money.. His phone would ring all the time it was his friends( these people are not his friends) he thinks I was the bad person he would cuss me for everything in the book talk to me hateful in front of these people would let them come stay at our home and I ask for them to leave he would tell them man you haven't done anything wrong. So no it's not a disease it's a choice.
I do feel for these people but that have to be strong will and be able to say no. I love my husband evn him being a addict but there is a time that you have to say enough is enough. They use that love when they hit low it's I am sorry I love you I will change and yes for a,little while. They don't care if they have love they are heartless. They only care about where they can get the next high. So all y'all can talk that bs about a disease that just an excuse all it is.
You can come on here and bash me that's fine. I don't really care. Cause no one can say or call me anything that I haven't been call my husband. If you really wanted off drugs you would go get help and stop but it's just to dry out cause its costing so much money to use, you go to detox and then hit the streets again cause it takes less and money will go further until you have to go to detox again.younonlynthink about yourself not the people your hurting that loves you. What about your kids, grand kids, wife, husband. How much are they suppose to take before enough is enough. If someone hurt your kids you would be so piss you want to hurt that person. Well you need to go look into the mirror cause it's you the addict
Yes I am piss because I loved my husband and drugs destroy my marriage.

Choice, sounds like your husband has the illness. Sounds like u were an enabler and then wised up and divorced him. You posters that don't think addiction is an illness don't understand. The only way to understand addiction as an illness is to be an addict. Many addicts use the word illness as a crutch to hide behind their addiction. I can understand why most of you think it is just a choice. The illness is the way addicts think prior to using their drug of choice. Someone who keeps doing the same thing, expecting different results is insane. 7 to 10 percent of population are addicts or alcoholic. We crave the drug of choice. We will do anything to supply our addiction. I've know addicts who have dug up family members graves to get valuable jewelry to sale and support their addiction. We think different than normal people. I don't think we should feel sorry for addicts and cater to them because they have the illness. Tough love is how family members should treat addicts who are using. Giving them money, making the excuse that he or she has the illness and get help it. The best remedy for addicts is trouble, health problems for drug use. Most addicts have to hit rock bottom before they can admit they have a problem. I don't think addicts should get free money because of their addiction. Free Govt money will only enable the addict to continue using. With all this said, addiction is an illness, no doubt. I know one large family where the father and mother were full blown addicts. They had 5 kids and 4 of the kids became addicts as well. The illness can be inherited from past generations. I'm happy for u folks that can drink in moderation. But 7 to 10 percent of us can't.

Kids to addicts become addicts because they were raised around it not because its hereditary. That's the most rediculous shit I've ever read. Addiction is not an illness its a weak mind and no self control. Its an excuse to fall on. This whole addiction is an illness shit is outlandishly asinine.

Well "idiocracy" at least you have your name right. You know more that researchers all over the world. While addiction may not be a contagious disease, the tendancies to become an addict are certainly hereditary. Many addicts and alcoholics are what they are because they inherited the tendancy to take more pills, or drink till they are drunk. Why do you think some people can take controlled medications exactly like they are prescribed and some take until they are high. Oh, let me guess, it's only those that are weak minded. You need to do some research before you open your mouth and show what a fool you are.
