minorities are the group of people who have been subjected to deplorable conditions since this country's inception. America was founded on the exploitation of minorities (african americans, latinos, and native americans). As a result, minorities are still suffering from the ramifications of such inhumane treatment. Although many of the minorities today did not experience the conditions of their ancestors firsthand, it will take a great deal of time and efforts to make such changes.

As in the US Supreme Court case of Grutter v. Bollinger (2003), race should be considered as one factor. However, a quota system is unacceptable. If we have a system built solely on filling a quota, we will likely be unsuccessful in achieving our goals. However, one's race should never be ignored as a factor. In order to increase the minority population of teachers and administrators in the ASD, these candidates must first be qualified and competent. Only after this criteria is met, should race be considered. Because such a high percentage of the ASD's student population is minority, it is important to have minority leaders in the school system. Not only for the kids to interact with successful professionals who are a living testimony, but also to hold the kids accountable for their actions and let them know that they can use their upbringing and background as an asset, rather than use it as an excuse to justify their lack of success.

It is absurd to believe that the exploitation that minorities have been historically subjected to are no longer an issue. Because it continues to have an impact on future generations, it is extremely important to have affrimative action and similar approaches in school and job application processes

This is too large an issue for ASD to fix alone, the root of this problem is found further down the line than hiring practices, the problem is a flawed system that is not getting enough minorities into 4 year degree programs, and when they do, as with all students highly capable and motivated individals are drawn to more respected and lucrative fields.

There is also the problem that many minorities are treated as square pegs in round holes by a system that is designed by mostly white women, and their experiences with the education system are not viewed as favorably as white students so they are less inclined to pursue the field.

Asians were enslaved, they're a minority. I don't see them having a problem. Oh wait, they study their tails off and sacrifice to become educated and successful. Irish and Italian people were subjected to the slums, to poverty, and poor jobs and were considered the scum of society. Who helped them? They helped themselves. With such a large population of Syrians in Allentown, why haven't they made school information available in Arabic? They get it in English. We pander to these "minorities" thinking they need the help. They need to help themselves. Study, sacrifice, work hard, follow the rules, show respect, be honest. Fight the good fight, nothing good is ever easy.

They need to hire animal trainers for 77% of the students. I don't care what breed it is.

Isn't this textbook reverse discrimination? If a caucasion person is more qualified, and interviews well (at that dump on Penn Street), shouldn't he/she get the job? Oh wait...that person, uses the ASD as the "fall-back" position until East Penn or Parkland's second interview results come back. You see, NO ONE WANTS TO TEACH IN THE ASD...even the 30 and Out's are counting the days. It's the Titanic and hiring someone based on his/her skin color is Reverse Racism, Goodbye ASD....hello Parkland!
Yea because all the suburban schools are wonderful and have no probelms. Even without the minority population at those schools, problems still arise. Quit taking shots at ASD unless you have first hand knowldege. There are still teachers at Dieruff today that I had when I graduated in 1986 so obviously they are not looking to leave. Don't assume you speak for everyone when you say goodbye ASD..Hello Parkland. By the way, my daughters are in the 30 or so percentage of students who are not minority, and some of their best friends are of a different race and my daughters don't see any difference between themselves and their friends. You assume that because a school has more of one race than another that no one wants to teach there. Thank God you don't!

Funny that the Irish were considered black when they first arrived in this country. Do Irish count as minorities?

I am sure the way to solve the ASD problems is firing all the ASD downtown administrators. First, D'Angelo, then Mayo, followed by Rita P.
It is not the hiring practices, it is the incapacity of the leaders. They basically don't care about ASD. They not even live close to the city. So, why to worry about who teach or not teach in Allentown.
I also know many good teachers and principals work in ASD.

Allentown is never going to change i can tell, It always has been a racist town. In the school some of the teacher they teach just to get pay but they donot care for the spanish students. or blacks. I hope that the spanish people educated more their children and help them to grow up to be a better citezen. It is a lot of racism in the school. /believe me i know.. I hope to the Lord that one day all this change for the bette not for the worse. American doesnot understand the black or hispanic. They think the world revolve around them.

What about the teacher that was hired in Easton? B.A. from University of Pennsylvania? Master's from Temple? Bilingual?
All of the documentation seemed to be in order according to the newspaper. Most of the posts here suggest minorities are unqualified based on skin color. The point of the article was that highly qualified people of color are being passed over. Did Easton hire an unqualified teacher? Or did Allentown miss an opportunity to hire an excellent candidate who happened to be Black? In the tone of these comments-racism again rears its ugly head. Children need role models of all races and ethnicities.

This quote was almost correct. Yes, this is reverse racism, on the part of the NAACP chick. But, no, all ASD teachers aren't running to Parkland or East Penn. Please. The only thing worse than a difficult student body is a catty faculty, which those polly purebread places breed. No. ASD teachers are great, and love teaching there, for the most part. The REASONS there aren't more minority teachers there are these: 1. No minorities apply because not that many are becoming teachers. 2. If a minority does make it in life, they don't want to return to their own neighborhoods. It's the white folks--the ones NAACP Lady hates--who sacrifice for the greater good and do a great job, all the while being shit on by the complainers.

It's time for ethnic groups to start taking responsibility for their own actions, crimes, addictions, and failures. Stop blaming Whitey. It's getting old. Start taking care of and fixing yourselves. Quit believing the liberals who tell you it's not your fault and they'll pay you to stay stupid, just so they can get your votes. Time to grow up and start contributing, as full members of society. The standards have been lowered for you; the jobs have been given to you; the education is FREE for you. (I'll be paying on mine till I retire--from W.O.R.K.) Many ethnic groups in this country, and especially in this valley, have bought into the propoganda and hype. George Bush treats you far more equally than any Clinton, Gore, Kerry, or Obama. He tells it like it is, and expects you to be able to handle it. The rest keep telling you what you want to hear. America has always been about individualism more than socialism. Fix yourselves and quit riding on the coat tails of hard workers. Quit being so gross.
