the war on drugs cannot be won by simply punishing dealers and users. we need to catch the trafficers. why can't we find out who brought it into the country now? It seems like we don't follow thru all the way up the chain.
You won't find out who is bringing it in to the country because too many people in power are being paid big bucks to turn the other way.

I'm happy this happened! It's scarry for a young woman to walk down the street by myself. I'm sick of losser crack heads on the street asking for some change to get high.

I'd love to see more positive stories about Latinos. For example, how about some Latinos in Allentown getting together to form community watch groups. They could volunteer their time to patrol neighborhoods where crime is rampant. Being Latino, they could work under the radar and with the trust of residents in the neighborhoods they patrol. All they'd need is a good pair of eyes and a cell phone set to speed dial the local police. Take back your neighborhoods from the drug dealing, knife wielding thugs who have been holding up convenience stores and fast food restaurants. You'll make a better name for yourselves if you can show everyone that your desire for a better quality of life trumps your reluctance to turn in someone who speaks the same language as you. I know as a white person, I'd have no pause in turning in a white neighbor if I saw him commit a crime or even suspected that he was involved in criminal activity. Crime affects us all. If not directly, indirectly.
Well there are these types of groups and programs all over the Valley. If one does not turn in a crook because they speak the same language then they are plain stupid. What makes you assume Latinos are this way? God, the stereotyping in this area is just out of control. Your point is valid, but don't act like this is not currently happening. If a resident of the "hood" stays quite and out of others business it is most likely due to fear of reprisal. How would you like to live in constant fear? Have a heart man and stop generalizing.

I live in Bethlehem, close to the Steel Workers monument on the South Side. Right in front of the Riverport main entrance there are these white skater kids, who are always out there skating. I see them almost every day. Two days ago as I approached from my normal commute home, I see a police officer talking to some kids holding skateboards and I think "wow, someone finally complained". The closer I get I start to notice that these aren't the same kids, but rather a group of Latino skater dudes. You should have seen the look on their faces, pure terror, made me sad as hell. See, we are already profiled my friend, and we don't need "legalized profiling" to be added to the books.

A few points worth noting. Did you hear any of the conversation between the cop and these kids? Do you have any knowledge of the nationality of these kids besides that they appeared to be hispanic? Do you know who started the conversation, the cop or the kids? Is it possible the cop was being friendly and simply commending the kids for partaking in a physical activity? Is it possible the cop knew one or more of the kids? I know when I was a kid we actually looked up to the police and many times held conversations with the cop walking his beat. And before you ask, yes, I grew up with and hung out with many Puerto Rican kids. We all looked up to the cop as a friend. And yes, there were lots of drugs in the neighborhood I grew up in. So before you claim that these kids were being "profiled", it may benefit you to understand that the conversation you witnessed could have started for any number of reasons.
I totally understand that, and maybe I look at things with a cynical eye, but the look on the one kids face was not a look of someone talking to a "friend". He looked hurt. Hurt because he knows that those other kids skate there all of the time and never have the cops called on them. So are you saying that profiling does not exist?

Of course it exists. Whether or not it applies to the situation you noted is unknown. Profiling is justified in many instances. Quite a few large drug busts took place on the I-95 corridor thanks to profiling. People were running drugs, using certain types of cars and exhibiting certain driving habits. They were profiled and busted. Of course Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson complained because most of the drug runners caught were black. If I'm getting on a plane and I overhear some Muslims praising Osama bin Laden, I want them taken off that plane before I board. And if a hispanic gets stopped for speeding and can't produce identification, it's reasonable to think he may possibly be Mexican and if so, there is also a chance he might be here illegally. But I am NOT in favor of cops stopping every hispanic just to see if they are here legally. That would be unethical.
I agree that profiling is necessary..we just don't need anymore than already exists.
