The city of Bethlehem is getting desperate for money now. Charging a fee is one thing, asking for the highest bidder is another. Give the working guy a chance to make a living without taking money out of your pocket. He's doing it honestly and is paying the price in the end. My bid is two cents.

I guess the city of Bethlehem has so much money that they would rather have people on welfare then to try and make it on ther own. god help our country to grow again like are first settlers did.

"City officials determined that city ordinances allow them to shut down Padilla's cart, but decided not to enforce it while they came up with new regulations." wow imagine that, an internal review of ordinances found the city was right, convienent nobody is mentioning that during the same review they found ordinances that would allow the carts to operate legally and without needing a highest bidder.i thought the city told Edwin he had all his licneses already. i wish i could change the rules in the middle of the game.
And the last time i heard highest bidder and government in the same sentence it was with Rob Blagojevich.
way to go Bethlehem Council, you had the chance to look like all stars but decided to shoot yourselves in the foot on the way out the door.

I love it! You want to sell food on our streets, you have to pay! If it lowers my taxes and helps my city out, then I am all for it.
Mr. Padilla should not be grandfathered in. He was breaking the law, he failed to get a right-of-way permit. It was generous of the city to let him stay open.

If anything, Padilla should be grandfathered into a license. That's a bunch of bull if he all of a sudden loses his license.

As long as these vendors have to bid for their business locations and then have to bid for them again in three years, that requirement should be placed on every other business in Bethlehem. Let them all have to bid and rebid for their business permits at their locations, regardless of how much money they spend to get established.

If it is right to do this to the cart vendors, then it is also right for storefront vendors. Think of all the businesses that will fight to set up in Bethlehem under this program and all the money the city will get from auctioning off all these businesses every three years.

my unfortunate congratulations to everyone on here that had been saying if you just pay the city large sums of money you could operate and do whatever you wanted. looks like it really is all about the cash in the end

nice, so basically established businesses can just put in the high bid and lock out the new guy? What is this Chicago, circa 1920?

No, it's George Bush's fault. Anything and everything that goes wrong in this country today is George Bush's fault.(I'm being sarcastic but that is the way politics is going these days.)

" be sold to the highest bidder."

Just as I figured... It's all about the GREED. Not a fair "first come, first served" rule, but all about who will grease the Bethlehem palm the most.

Kudos to the local government! You've proved yourself to be as shady and crooked as the national government!

What ever happened to the "free enterprise system this country was built on?? do we have elected who are uneducated in basic economics? Sounds to me like they have become educated in socialism and have earned all A's on the report card.
If anybody should be bidding, it should be the voters who bid the current members of council out of office!!

Holy Moley.... how long have the Democrats had the majority vote in Congress?? Think about that before you talk so ignoroant. Bush's administration didnt help, but neither did our crappy democratic congress. And now we have a democrat for a president, and majority of the houses are still democrat, and yet their is no sign of recovery.
