Ice-chunk death defendant freed

No cake, no balloons, no party greeted Dennis Gumbs when he came home Tuesday. The only sign it was his 21st birthday was that he was free to return to Allentown.

Oh shut up David. Just shut up. The kid was just that, a kid.

If he screws up as an adult, then go ahead, give it to him with both barrels.

But don't sit there and flame a kid for doing something stupid. I know you're simply being a racist. And so does everyone else who reads these boards. Grow up.

I pray Gumbs learned from the time he spent in prison, and I pray that God has mercy on the family he destroyed and the relatives. If he does do something with his life, maybe, just maybe, something good can come out of this tragedy. God bless the family and kids without their mother. To spew hate now, is not going to help anyone involved tin this mess. I agree with steve-2304. To continue the hate, just makes everyone's pain go on that much longer.

The kid has a GED, and "hopes" to get a job. Oh, and has been convicted of murder as a juvenile. And you think he is going to turn it around. The cards are really stacked against him.

steve-2304 -

The subject of race never entered my mind. He knew what he was doing, and if you lost someone you love by what you say "The kid was just that, a kid.", you would change your tune. Imagine looking over at your wife with a hole in her chest in the car. Would you EVER be able to think "Well, he was just a kid"

And why do these criminals always end up being "mentors" while they are incarcerated or in juvie? Ridiculous

He knew that throwing that ice chunk would cause damage to someone, I don't believe he thought he would KILL. Possibly a dent in a car, someone getting scared and slamming on the brake, ect., but not killed. He did his time, now let him prove he learned the consequences for stupid actions. I wish more people in this world would learn from their mistakes.

Indeed, one condition of his release should have been that he never live within the city boundaries of Allentown ever again.

Check your own pasts. I'll bet most of us have done something just as stupid thinking nothing seriously bad would happen. He did his time, and lost his youth. He didn't just sit there and do nothing, he earned his ged, took a college course, give him a second chance. How many of you adults had a few drinks and got behind the wheel last night? In the last week?

Some of you people are truly pathetic. Has anyone here made any stupid decisions when they were 15?

You people come on these various articles and you "walk on water." Yes this was a preventable tragedy, and yes Gumbs made a stupid decision at 15, but don't you think it is time you came off your high horse and gave the kid a break?

The husband of dead woman should give him a birthday present!!!

None of the words you type here change anything. A woman is dead and the family has to find a way to move on. A man has served his time and must find a way to move on. The words I see here just dwell on the past. Everyone needs to try to get beyond this.

i am anything but a racist but if you were the womens husband or children who no longer have their mom would you be so ready to let him out. He was just about 16 at the time. He was plenty old enought to know what could happen dropping a 15 ilb block of ice off a bridge onto a car. He wasnt very far from getting his own licence (by the way in pa when a 16 yr old drives he is considered and adult while in the car as it pertains to traffic laws) with that said if he has the mental capacity to know how to opporate a motor vehicle and understand the vehicle code of pa then he is plenty old enough to be tried as an adult for involuntary manslaughter. So insted of calling people racist for stating facts and or opinions why dont you just SHUT UP!!!!

People I Know that a life was taken by a kid, But he's now a young man! I know this young man and I feel he has alot to offer. Let's just give him a chance to prove himself. He knows that he's under the microscope so he knows that he has to do the right thing. If the words forgiveness doesn't exist in your beleaf you have bigger problems in life than worrying about a young man readjusting in society after being incarcerated. Message!

"Gumbs was originally charged as an adult, but the case was moved to juvenile court after mental health experts testified they believed he could be rehabilitated."

This is the problem in our society. These 'so-called experts' always want to believe that these kids now a days can be rehabilitated. You are all very delusional. These kids today have no respect, no ethics, no morals! They think they are owed the world.

I really feel bad for the husband and children. This punk only gets 6 years for murder. He should have been fried within the first 24 hrs! The only way any of these adolescents are going to learn is if we start eliminating the problem!

I really hope he has changed and can get on with his life, because he has to live with the fact that he killed someone for the rest of his life.
