"Advocates for the disabled says it's offensive to those who endured imprisonment on those grounds."

Then don't Go to the event! Duh!

Don't ruin everyone's fun because you have ghost in your closet!

The use of asylums, state hospitals and other names were places to put people with developmental disabilities and mental retardation. At these places these individuals were then subjected to further torture by abuse(physical, mental, sexual), experimented upon and unspeakable horrors. In this day these connotations are still with us, such as the men in white coats. As a parent of a disabled child, we are to make sure they are empathetic to others and advocate for themselves. However, the more we advocate that this historic place need not be a Halloween attraction, the more ignorant people mock us. There are other ways to use this historic place that is more respectful of those that lived and died there.

I think that even though its not the best way to utillize the building, at least the owner is keeping it standing instead of tearing it down to build a mall or department store. A lot of old buildings are torn down quicker than they were built! Besides for the "haunted house" event that is going to be held there, it may be a start of other uses for the building and better things for that community.

Does EVERYTHING have to be pc????
It's Halloween for cryin' out loud.
The one night of the year to leave reality & HAVE FUN!!!
Kick back people.
If you're so offended stay home.
Besides do you realize how many jobs are created by haunted attractions??? And how much money is generated by such ventures???
Money that can also be spent @ bars & dining establishments in your neighborhood???
Think twice.........

Good lord, if they would do this at ground zero in NY where people died and said it was entertainment, would people still agree? This is devaluing to the lives of people who were already mistreated enough by having to live through the horrible experiences at Pennhurst. This is not family fun. If your family was tortured in a house and someone wanted to turn it into a Halloween attraction would you think it was fun? This is just plain wrong and insensitive.

I took care of adults with developmental disabilities for quite some time and have even met some people that lived at Pennhurst. I, personally, would love to tour this place and if a haunted house halloween attraction gives me the chance, then so be it. I think everyone would agree that some of the things that happened there were horrible, but horrible things happen everywhere. Sometimes people need to lighten up a bit and not get so offended by things.

I agree, they wouldn't find it amusing if they recreated the 9/11 event for amusement and entertainment, just like I bet if they reenacted an event of how children back in the early 1900's got belted, beat and tortured as punishment they wouldn't find it too amusing either

I think this is an awesome idea!!! Make a haunted house where not only adults but many children can have a great time and enjoy themselves. I think it is great that the building is not just sitting there wasting away. They will generate sooo much money from this event. Maybe that money can then be donated to help those in this day in age with a disability. Not everything has to be sooo negative.

This should not be used as and amusement facility... it was not fun what happened to the people who lived in this facility at one time... My brother was a resident in this hospital and all he had was a simple learning disability but by the time the jerks in this hospital/ school were done with him he had lung problems, brain damage and so on and so forth! I saw FIRST HAND what the residents went through and the face they put on for visitors... People were skin and bones and they left them die!! THEY DID NOT CARE FOR THESE PEOPLE!! These are not allegations these are fact n i saw them occur!! The state also let them exam on these innocent residents and ruin their lives instead of helping them! So this attraction will be a joke in hopes of its unsuccessfulness!!!

Ok, so you wont allow a halloween event? Fine. then think of the fact that every year kids go down to pennhurst and literally break in. and walk around to try to have ghost encouters without permission. Would u rather have an event thats safe and secure or have kids just breaking in. Oh, and suppose some kids get rowdy and decide to vanidlize the place? im surei t happens. some kids will go for the scare others just to be rowdy and break and paint things. we all know how it goes.
So.. with that being said.. which is better? bottom line you'll never keep people away. spririts are intriguing.. even if you bull doze the property, they'll still go. Look at gettysburg battlefield, no buildings really at all, and millions flock to it.
Far as im concerned.. Get over it, find something else to complain about.

My question is was that the way they handled kids back then with learning disabilities, they institutionalized them!My kids have learning disabilities so I guess I should lock them away,My god they put parents down today and kids are born with cerebal palsey, adhd, and autism, when parents back then couldn't even handle a child with a learning disabilty.

Yeah I guess the parents from back then should re-evaluate their own parenting before they put the parents down today.

That kid should have never been beat or tortured because he shouldn't have even been there,so the only one to blame in that case is the parents for putting him there

the dirty secret in the spring city area is that for years former employees looked the other way at all sorts of abuse and atrocities that took place at pennhurst and were was the outcry then...the place has been closed for years and finally someone is putting it into profitable use...a halloween attraction is hardly a matter of concern

To all those who support using a place that people were literally tortured, be careful what you wish for, karma is a b*tch! So, if you or a loved is tortured or murdered, remember that you're okay with using it for entertainment and for someone else to make a profit off of you or your family's misery. Family fun at your family's expense.

No one is arguing to stop halloween, or stop all haunted houses, the point is to be sensitive to the people and families who suffered at Pennhurst and don't turn the hell they went through into something claimed to be fun and entertaining. Maybe one day you'll end up in a place like that, and then you'll have plenty of time to think about how unfun it is.

Haunted houses should held in other places that don't devalue and make light of the history of horrible events.

Unbelieveable how PC this nation has gotten... Get over it. To those that feel this wrong, why didn't you all chip in together and purchase the property a few years ago when it was available for sale?!... You can't have it both ways. This is a commercial venture that has a viable market, is relatively harmless as entertainment, and brings jobs to the area. Lighten up.
