Critics: ASD hires few

A barrage of questions was directed at a tense Allentown School Board on Thursday night about why it has not lived up to the promise of minority hiring as outlined in a diversity plan adopted by the district in ... Full Story

It's 2008...right? Why are we calling anyone a minority? I thought the quota system went out years ago and hiring professionals was based on qualifications and not race. Oh yeah that's right it wouldn't be fare to have more qualified professionals than "minority" professionals...it does make a difference (cough, cough).

Let's see...based on the numbers below Caucasian and African Americans are the minority now so let's hire more white and African American teachers. Makes sense to me!

**The district has no black administrators. In the 2007-08 school year, whites made up 87 percent of the district's total work force, while minorities made up 13 percent. Hispanics made up 60 percent of the student body, followed by 21 percent white and 17 percent black.**

What ever happened to hiring the most qualified person for the job? If I apply for a job and I the most experienced, a good eduaction, and recommendations...yet, I lose the position because of the color of my skin or ethic background? I'd call that racism. Just because I'm caucasion doesn't mean that all the hard work and studying should be secondary to fill a qouta. I've had teachers of ethic backgrounds, and it's not their skin color that I remember. It's the type of instructor and the values they instilled in me. Teaching should never be about race,

The ASD doesn't need any specific "color" of teacher, They simply need more teachers who want to stay for their entire career. Many young ASD teachers do view their current jobs as spring board to some of the suburban districts. Sometimes it may be about the pay scale, but a vast majority of former ASD teachers (presently suburban teachers) will cite discipline issues as the main reason for departure. This poses an interesting question:
Would hiring more minority teachers make the students want to behave better? Are current ASD students rebelling or acting out against their teachers based solely on their skin tone?
Doubtful. I am not against hiring a more culturally diverse faculty in the ASD...as long as the best candidate is hired.
my two cents

I agree wholeheartedly with Miss Judy. Can't we take race out of the equation for once?

Hiring the best teachers is the key to facilitate the education being taught at ASD. The parents are the problem!!!!!! They don't send the students remove them mid year to take them to PR and expect the ASD teachers to educate them.
Hiring more minority teachers is a joke, it will not change the parents. I am not against hiring a more culturally diverse faculty in the ASD...as long as the best candidate is hired. Well spoken the parents should be held accountable for the education process.
If it wasn't for the dedicated staff at ASD the district wouldn't have anything to offer.
Stop the diversity issue with staff and tell parents to get involved, off welfare, complete schooling themselves, and stop having kids from multiple absentee parents.
Parents/ families in conjunction with public schools make a difference. Clean up ASD and the district will have less problems to solve in the schools.
Our state needs to stop the migration from NY because they have destroyed this city.We are dealing with other cities problem at least ASD address the students needs first, without this no education can take place.
Good job ASD for handeling what parents drop at your door and not running away from the problem. Lazy parent and teachers who want a job because they are of color shame on you if you were to change the mind set of your people we at ASD wouldn't be trying to clean up your ignorant kids send them to parkland/ Whitehall see if they can fix your disfunctional minorities. They have all but destroyed Catasauqua district.
Get a job and get off the system wefare is not a job also start putting the kids first over your needs.

The Big Lie: "She said students are being underserved by the lack of diversity among teachers.''When they see someone like them, that breeds success.''"

At no time in my education was I interested in becoming a middle-aged slightly pudgy pedagogue. And of my classmates, only the worst losers were interested in that.

Of course, that's before anyone realized what a goldmine government schooling was to become. Guess that's what prompts this critique.

So because the hispanic community has chosen to INVADE the area, Allentonians that have been here for generations should be turned away so the hispanics can take care of their own.

They get special spots in Bethlehem government, want preferred treatment by ASD...what next? How much can we pander to a "special" group of people that segregate themselves by language and flag at every turn.

Actually Allentown has done an excellent job hiring minority teachers. In that white students are in the minority, it stands to reason that hiring white teachers to provide solid role models for these kids is the way to go.

very nice, you write the truth and if the hispanics want to fix allentown let them try. They should police their own mentality of lazy, uneducated culture and then blame themselves.Allentonians, should not have to deal with this, stand strong for what is right instead of what is easy.

ASD has some great teachers, I hope they continue to hire based on education and ability. The system needs to be color blind. The biggest problem ASD has is that too many parents do not read to children and often no english is spoken at home.

Correct, that's a BIG part of the problem. Kids showing up for kindergarten unprepared and stay behind for years. Learning begins at birth. Either you teach your child to be a learner or you don't.

I didn't had very many white male teachers that I remember. I think I've been robbed of the opportunity of success.

The only minority is the honest taxpayer. If you want someone of your race or ethnicity, go to hello. Why should we hire unqualified teachers and assistants just to keep some minorities happy? If you fling people spent as much time raising your children as you do worrying aboutminorities, they might be better studenta and adults. And as for pandering to a special group, let's give them their own execution chamber because the way the children are being taught by their parents, that is where they will be going.

i agree on one point.. the Affirmative Action movment is way past its time and need. Plus we shouldnt have "quotas" It should be based purely on skill and talent. Does the employee have the qualifications? Yes or No! there is no, well what color are they.. that is just rediculous and cause for continued segragation and racial tendencies. Lets move from out past and onto the future!

The biggest problem is the administrators , principles etc are mostly white in a hispanic, black etc. filled school district. I'm sorry but I am white, yet I feel that having principles, asst. principles, teachers of other races in these schools is very important when most of your school is made up of minorities. I think minorities deal better with minorities, they don't feel like they are being spoken down to etc. Not sure If Im getting my point across or not, but my main point is stop hiring white folk who are basically being hired because they are white when your schools need more minority leadership. White folk are not always the best for the job.

I think you misunderstand the problem here. You have 70% hispanic students and only 7% teachers, that is wrong. In a city filled with people like yourself, hispanic children learn quick not to trust whites, with people like you can you blame them? Hispanic teachers and leaders serve as role models by their presence alone. I have been one and have seen the results, have you? These numbers are pathetic. Obviously Bethlehem has figured it out, they recruit hispanics because they want to end the cycles of poverty, ASD doesn't seem to get that.

Allentown has sent administrators to Puerto Rico to recruit teachers did you know that? As a fifth generation Allentonian, that pisses me off. Because of the INVASION, we have to turn away qualified whites because they don't represent the "majority" of students? This fuels my anger towards what hispanics have done to Allentown. Move into an area, overpopulate it, trash it, demand the language change to meet your needs, demand more government services to support you, demand changes in hiring to meet your rapidly growing numbers, claim it's for the benefit of the kids, then wave some other flag in my face! America has sold out it's own taxpaying citizens, those with generations of veterans, to support those not even born here. Look at how the city has declined as the hispanic population has risen...coincidence? You, Jib, always sounded like a rational, intelligent individual. But like my other hispanic friends who work hard and are decent people, you should be disappointed by what the hispanic population as a whole has become.

you don't get it this begins at home why are they not trusting whites when they can't trust their own people. you are pathetic in your sumation. Go back to PR or are you pulling the race card to get head or waiting to collect welfare. Ask yourself how many family member you have sitting back getting a monthly check or better yet HUD. The whites in our community should be so lucky or the seniors who worked to receive SS have to share it with the PR who never worked a day in their lives. Where is the justice in that!
