I'm with you on this one. If people knew how special ed funding is spent and how much of it there is, they'd be sick. It's a huge disaster.I've carefully read your comments. This is only one case in the multitude of special ed agreements that are costing districts untold dollars. If you could access the special education records of students in your districts, you would be yelling louder than you are now. You CAN ask for the special education budget and that will give you an idea of where your tax dollars are going. You will also be very unpopular because you are criticizing disabled children and their needs.
Districts hands are tied when the courts interpret the Individuals With Disabilities Act the way they do. Poke around and have some fun finding out how a good law has gone down the tubes allowing for huge expenditures and for people like this to take advantage of it! Apologies to those who have not used this law for personal gain or for exorbitant educational plans for their disabled children.

I am a senior at PAHS, apparently the morning call forgot to put the pictures of all the students, sitting in class with our winter jackets on because the heat wasn't working. Hm..

The Nerve....I have GAD, panic attacks and a few "minor" mental health issues due to being bullied at Nitschman and Liberty. NO one(except my parents) ever cared that I had panic attacks at school and phobias due to aggressive students who should have been kicked out. I managed to graduate from Liberty in 1984 and I work very hard to earn an A.Sc from NCC in Rad Tech.
This lazy ass mother and daughter NEED to repay the taxpayers of Palmerton back with interest. |

good for Rebecca. While her fear of school may have limited her education thus far it has obviously given her a jump on how to properly manipulate the system. The work ethic that has been set for her at home is being closely followed. Rebecca's fear of school apparantly does not apply to modeling school and summer camp. I am sure she will be scared of college too and why dont we set up a fund for her now as work, I am sure, will be an issue for the rest of her life. Please let me know where I should send my check to Rebecca since I am sure Rebecca is not scared of tropical vacations and big screen TV's to help her self esteem. Perhaps I can get a shopping list from Rebecca and her mother. I can collect money from the neighborhoods in the Lehigh Valley. After an 80 hour work week spent supporting my family, I will use the collected funds to get Rebecca some clothes at Abercrombie and Fitch and a Bose home entertainment system so Rebecca and her mother can be rewarded with more of lifes needs at taxpayer's expense. At least Rebecca has taught me something in all this. I am suddenly developing a fear of paying my bills and taxes. This is a genuine fear. Please send your hard earned money to me at www.youvegottobekiddingme.co n. Please make the checks large as I will need to be quitting my job to figure out how to spend your money when you send it.

This whole thing is a nightmare. This people are nothing but the lowest of lows, ripping off the taxpayers, and the person on the school board that even suggested this should also be held accountable and be made to return all the money that was spent on ANYTHING but homeschool materials!
What was taken away from the rest of the kids that went to school everyday to pay for this scam. Evey taxpayer in the school district should sue them for discrimination because they did not get to go on trips and summercamps for free. SOMETHING must be done to stop this and the money should be returned. That would be the RIGHT thing to do. How do they sleep at night knowing they are scum and feeding off the rest of the school district and state. |

"Rebecca says she reads for pleasure, enjoying parodies such as ''Zen of the Zombie,'' a mock self-improvement book. But her writing skills are weak and she can only do basic multiplication and division on downloaded worksheets. She estimates she spends three hours a day learning."
No kidding 'her writing skills are weak and she can only do basic multiplication.' She only spends three hours a day learning!? That's it!? In between the trips to Europe and NYC, as well as modeling school and reading teen trash magazines, there is no wonder she can't write or do basic multiplication! I'm glad the mother has to sell the house. Serves her right. |

I have a work phobia, Can I have some money to cover that? Get her into a school and stop complaning. Wait until she gets into real life. GROW UP! GET INTO SCHOOL. STOP USING TAX PAYERS MONEY FOR THIS.

Mental illnesses are very real including anxiety and phobias. I don't think the child should be or have been forced to go to school everyday. I do think that a stay in a mental hospital for children would benefit her greatly and she can receive an education in the mental hospital.
How this situation could have been allowed to go on without serious mental health services and interventions is insane! There are several mental hospital day programs/schools for children like this and that is where this child should be right now. The fines should stay for the month to pay because she cost her child an education. |

The best part is she is appealing but since she has no job taxpayers pay for her appeal and lawyer to fight the taxpayer supported school defended by a taxpayer paid solicitor.
Is it time for a revolt? |

This is a criminal act--the mother should be put in prison for emotionally crippling this girl from a very young age. I am so mad that no one from social services has looked into this abuse--and it is ABUSE. These two will always be a strain on society, leeches ! This mother has real mental problems if she thought people reading the article would be sympathtic, we are outraged.

Y Not, good post, made me smile. I like the idea of not going to work, who wouldn't.
boomer1, I agree, I will back you on this one. Maybe the school district can give us a rebate on the taxes we paid for the last few years :) |

"Because her daughter has gone the past year without any formal education, Barbara Maykish said she thinks she might need another compensatory education fund."
Suck it up, lady. Sell your house, sell your dogs, sell every thing you own. I'm tired of my tax dollars going to scam artists like you. |

While I do think that we over-medicate our children, I think this is a case where medication could actually make a difference. I have social anxiety disorder and I use to cry when having to face crowds or strangers; I was on Paxil for 2-3 years and it made a world of difference. While I still feel nervous facing these situations; the fear no longer controls me and I am able to get past it and live a healthy, normal life.
