Girl's fear of school costs district thousands

Rebecca Maykish is 17 and dreads school so much that she stopped going regularly.

Please don't say bad things. She already has low self esteem. The poor mother deserves a medal for her devotion to this troubled child. If it takes another compensatory fund, more subscriptions, spa treatments, trips tp Europe or whatever else this unfortunate child must be educated and allowed to graduate even if it takes until she's 21.

This is absurd, kids who are truly interested in their educations don't even get their basic needs met in poorer districts, while this student and her mother vacation on tax payers money. It is equally absurd that the public is funding these lavish alternative educational opportunities i.e., modeling schools and boarding schools, when some students in poorer districts don't even have the luxury of having individual textbooks. This sounds almost criminal when you look at this compensatory educational fund from this perspective.

Downright fraud! Vacations? Modeling school? Give me a break. The school board & state need to use "tough love" and get back to the basics of education. And the mother - well, she may have given birth but she sure isn't a mother. If the kid has a true disability then mandate treatment or arrest the mother for child abuse. I just think they're both lazy and both scam artists.

Something is definitely wrong with the way the laws handling this are set up. She was awarded thousands of dollars to provide for at home educational costs but there is no control over how the money is spent? Then as soon as the money runs out they fine her thousands for truancy? That makes no sense whatsoever.

We don't know all the circumstances or the reasons for this kid's phobia. Why is her father in Peru and why is mom not working. Sounds like this girl has some real problems. There are alot of people with phobias and anxieties to large crowds. What are the capabilities of this girl when it comes to the basic reading, writing and arithmatic, what grade is she considered to be in. I don't feel she did anything wrong if the school board allowed her these reimbursement and what is the mother or any parent to do if a child refuses to attend school in a circumstance like this? Sounds like her phobia started at a young age and probably should have been addressed years ago. This is a tough one. It is pretty bad that her mother is about her only friend. Don't be so quick to judge. No one knows what it is like to live or deal with someone who has a phobia like this and the woman did nothing wrong if the school board allowed her the expenses and I don't feel she should be fined if her daughter has a diagnosed mental disorder and apparantly it is diagnosed and she has been to psychologist for it. Can't be easy for this girl or mother.
Someone needs to step in and prepare this girl for her future and give her the tools she needs to make it in the world, doesn't seem like mom has been able to do this, sounds like she is probably a single parent and has had to deal with this on her own. I think though the government should help out so this girl doesn't end up on disability the rest of her life, she is young enough to change the course of her life if she receives the appropriate shooling, counseling ect...

did you read the article??? hello i don't think she was the only person in modeling school??? where's her phobia then. i hope her mother reads these posts. She is such a loser. Good for her that she has to sell her house. and hello i am a single parent of 2 children and my kids go to school. I pay for my child to go to day care not the school not welfare. There should be charges against this mother.

Mom is brain dead. She's also a criminal. This girl reads teen magazines but can't socialize in a school atmosphere. Schools in California? The Mcall could probably dig some dirt up on this mother. Maybe the mother & the daughter need to go to school together and both learn, then the mother could get a job & do basic skills, I bet she's more worried about the assistance being ended than what her daughter will do to support herself the rest of her life. Then they will both be getting assistance & not working. Why hasnt the mother worked? Why hasn't she sat down and did reading,writing & math with her? Probably because she can'd do it herself. They both need help but they are so used to being sponges & babied they are never gonna get anywhere. How sad.

When you enabel a childs behavior the way this mother has, the child will never grow up, will never mature to be able to make it in life, this CHILD will end up like her mother, unemployed and sucking the life out of anything it can find, in this case, this family is sucking this school district dry. A perfect example of so called doctors who think hey know everything there is to know about a person.. but they cannot straighten out their own lives and as long as the taxpayer is footing the bill for their so called expertiece they will contiune to rob the taxing district. Shoving money into their pockets. If the child dont want to go to school she is 17 exspell her and let it fend for herself in the real world. These doctors came come up with all kinds of excuses to get money from the taxpayers, and the sad part about it is the district officials and other so called officials (judges ETC.) who are inept because they were appointed to their positions through political means. Instead of receiving a paycheck they should be getting electrical shock therapy at the local state hospital to bring them back to reality.

Aside from the mother taking advantage of the district's funds, the school district needed to have someone to step up and question these expenditures after all of these years. They should start at the bottom and work their way up and get rid of the scum that took advantage of the system.... Start with the mother--charge her with fraud. Then the board members who have approved magazine subscriptions, trips to EUrope, etc....I would be livid if I was a resident in that district helping to fund a mother who was afraid to use her parenting skills and now has a daughter who cannot handle life.

That 45K should have been used for psychological counseling for the daughter so she can lead a productive life. The mother should have her butt thrown in jail for neglect and fraud.
