I say the best plan is to keep sales tax on outsourced and imported products not Made BY American labor from being sold in this state. then remove the sales tax from the American Labor produced products.
That would give industries incentive to bring production back.... Our sales tax can be based anyway we want... Our state was not part of NAFT and its time to make our own tariffs since our federal Government wont.
If we can tax the h ell out of cigarettes and booze we can tax the import junk too!
I'm not talking Honda's and Toyota's here... they are produced in this country...I'm talking Bissell Vacs. Frigidaire's products and all the others that turned trader on us.
That is called tariffs, as you say, and that is a swear word to Republicans....kinda like taxes.

I was a Paying member of the national Republican committee. I haven't paid dues or sent a penny of support for at least 4 years now. I have not been happy with either party for several years.

It may be a swear word when it comes to other countries. But, they have had no problems at all with sticking it to the average American that Smokes or has other Sins.
Both parties need to decide if they care about America and its future or if they are going to continue down this road to destruction.

A few points I would like to make.... The more depressed our countries economy gets... the stronger Chinas Military and economy are becoming..(Scary thought in and of itself)
Our employers in this state have been allowed for far too long to have temp. workers that can never quite reach that magic point of being hired in with the benefits.. Only because companies are abusing what once was a very good way to fill short term needs.(Temp. agencies and employers need restrictions imposed to limit how long a need can be considered temporary....If its a perment position... then the worker should be also. Those that have been through the broken promises know what I mean.)
Instead of opposing this practice our state endorses it by telling unemployed people to take the job as a temp. or lose their unemployment...
That just makes the situation worse in times like these.

If we as a dying state don't impose our own tariffs to protect our interest here... Who will?
I say tax the heck out of outsourced products and give incentive tax breaks to products produced here in our state...
Give employers tax free status to locate here and let the outsourced employers pay the way.
I want to buy American made and assembled products.....But, where do you find them and How??
You can no longer go by the manufactures Name.
Lets keep Michigan workers working...The H ell with China and Mexico.
I could ramble on for ever on the issues of this state... Its not completely Granmoles fault.
None of them people in Lansing are doing their jobs...
Working together maybe they could accomplish something besides bad decisions.

The insanity of it is every other country like China has tariffs that, well, protect their own economy. Surprise, surprise. There is a 22.x% tariff to export an American car into China or even Korea. Them sending a car here to be sold? 2.1%.

What about a Michigan Company wanting to bid on another State's project. They will lock out our people. Socialists always do more harm when trying good intentions.

Pehaps you could fill us in on why we should model our economy after China, that seems to be what you are getting at. Please give economic examples of why we are were we are and China is where it is. Also could you please explain how you are smarter than every member of the government and every business owner in the US, you seem to imply this in all your posts. Why are you not a business owner yourself, what with your vast knowledge and experience.

I think you need to read what we were posting about.. there is a lot more to this than to "Model" China.... We have no desire to "Model after China.... The point is they tax our products at huge percentages and we don't..
Explain Why China should be able to tax our products and we can't or don't on theirs?
NAFTA was supposed to make it an equal playing field.... Not one sided... But, that is the way it has been with every agreement our country has ever made with a Communist country.

Okay, Hire Michigan First! The state is full of it. THEY DON'T EVEN HIRE MICHIGAN ROAD CONSTRUCTION WORKERS TO FIX MICHIGAN ROADS! I drive my construction sites all the time and see the workers vehicles are from Illinois,Indiana, and beyond. Maybe Lansing should look in their own back yard first!
We moved to Indiana, just for this reason. To go to work for the Indiana company that repairs Michigans roads.

I hated to leave, but what could I do? I have to feed the family and Michigan wouldn't the Michigan company that I used to work for. Soooo, I got out. Now I earn a wage that I should have been, by working for a Michigan company.

The difference is, that I am spending my wages in Indiana. Most of it goes for housing, taxes, util. groceries and I just financed my car at an Indiana dealer.

Gas is cheaper here too.

Michigan cannot impose a tariff (on its own) as it is unconstitutional.
Article I Section 10 wrote:
No state shall, without the consent of the Congress, lay any imposts or duties on imports or exports, except what may be absolutely necessary for executing it's inspection laws: and the net produce of all duties and imposts, laid by any state on imports or exports, shall be for the use of the treasury of the United States; and all such laws shall be subject to the revision and control of the Congress.
If I understand it correctly, Michigan could place a tariff on imports, if, and only if the US Congress allows Michigan to do so. And if that were to happen the money would have go to the US government. However there is not any chance of that happening.

Thanks for that... They sure do good at taxing everything else...
From the way I read that.. It sounds like we need a strict and expensive import inspection law..
That way anything imported is subject to the cost of enforcing an inspection of all import products.
An import Tax/Tariff/cost recovery Fee. same thing different name.. something our state is good at coming up with..
They already do this with the out of state (internet) purchases called the use tax on mail order.

I agree with your theory. But if I may give just one useless factoid about Bissell. Having worked there briefly. The thing about Bissell having left was because of Walmart. Walmart again demanded Bissell to sell their products to Walmart at specific pricing. Bissell was not able to sell their product at said pricing. So, keeping their products on the shelves of Walmart they opted to relocate from the state. Bissell was only doing what it could to keep their products selling. Now, as for Walmart here is an American company helping drive American business out of specific states to receive the pricing they demand. I suggest kick Walmart out...LOL.

I have felt that way for a long time.
They started out in this state with their all American product advertising and All American, Super employees that no company could match the perfect treatment of... Now, here we are with all those employees being treated in substandard ways. No one is allowed to make a full 40 hour work week.
Then there is the trade Deficit they create that is larger than our entire countries exports could even begin to try and offset..

I read back a few months ago. That Walfart is going to spend $9 Billion this year in China. Now, imagine the impact they could have to this economy if they spent half that much in this country. Time an time again the benefits companies would have selling their products. Instead of demanding an forcing companies to leave just to sell their goods at their stores. Whats next U.S. currency with Sam Waltons face on it?...LOL
