Although there has been no movement between the state and Seneca Nation to solve disagreements pertaining to the nation's three Western New York casinos, a move to develop a nation gaming facility in the Catskills is afoot.

The nation reports it is committed to building and operating a Catskill mountains casino and will seek an experienced and capable developer to assist it in the pursuit. Nation officials report their governing body, the Tribal Council, recently approved that decision and created a committee of four to steer the nation's Catskill casino efforts. They issued a request for proposals for developer partners and will seek necessary approvals under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act to enable the Catskills casino. That act requires a tribal-state compact for such a casino.

"The Seneca Nation holds title to 63 acres of land in the Catskills, and whether we build a ... gaming facility on that land or nearby, the nation's leaders are firm in their commitment to the Catskills region that we expect to build a first-class gaming facility there, as we have on nation lands in Allegany (Territory on which Salamanca sits), Buffalo and Niagara Falls," said nation President Robert Odawi Porter.

"The Seneca Nation has a proven track record of operating successful gaming establishments and a Seneca Catskills casino would be a great addition to our existing facilities," said Councilor Michael L. John, also a Catskills casino committee member. He said the nation has been at the table and intends to continue to be pertaining to a Catskills casino.

The nation and state have been at odds regarding a compact they have for nation casinos in the Western New York area, including Salamanca. Nation officials have alleged the state violated the compact for the casinos by allowing gaming within a certain radius of the casinos. The nation has therefore not paid the state an annual share of revenues outlined in the agreement. By not paying, the state has said the nation is in violation. The matter was expected to go to binding arbitration after the sides failed to negotiate a resolution.

There has been no resolution of the matter, however, with municipalities that get a portion of revenues paid to the state by the nation not receiving the funding.

That has put the hosting municipalities in financial straits.

Despite that, however, the Catskills announcement was made Thursday. Multiple parties are expected to be involved in the Catskills venture, so it is uncertain what path will be taken regarding another agreement with the state to provide for casino specifics.

State gubernatorial spokespeople could not be reached to comment Thursday regarding whether they would be interested in pursuing another compact.

Quoting "the nation's leaders are firm in their commitment to the Catskills region that we expect to build a first-class gaming facility there, as we have on nation lands in Allegany (Territory on which Salamanca sits), Buffalo and Niagara Falls," said nation President Robert Odawi Porter."

True, the sites in Salamanca and Niagara Falls are first-class gaming facility, I would argue that the facility in Buffalo is not, unless, they continue building on their original site, with the original planed casino, or are committed to build on the rumored Buffalo water front.

She:kon greetings from your brothers the Kanienkehaka the people of the land of the flint and also the keepers of the Eastern Door. Geographically our villages were in the immediate area. From time immemorial, our people thrived in these lands but because of war, famine, greed, negligence, we were forced from our homelands and settled mainly to the north, but we have never forgot our ancestors ashes and bones which are in those grounds. I take offense to our Seneca brethren in this case, You are the keepers of the western door. Stay on your side, and on your own territory, perhaps we must give you the wampum and tell you our thoughts, that these are our lands.

I'd say "claiming" isn't a strong enough adverb. My belief is that this person IS Mohawk. Read:

SNI has no right to build a casino there. SNI is screwing it's own people over right here in WNY, so they do not care about those people out there. Beware Catskills - GREED. GREED. GREED.

If one were to be "truly" native, which is not open to defintion and is just a silly term, then there would be no Casinos period.

I respect the post here and am not really a fan of the Catskills adventure.

And how does one figure that natives have been gambling since before recorded time. Do you know what a snow snake is?? Its a native gabling device. And once again the white just showed us how to do it better,So please learn the culture before posting other wise you'll just look like an ass. As far as not needing casinos Umm yes we do are eventual goal is not to be dependant on NYS which will help the white population to remove a tax debt that was created years ago,By your governers and there out rageous spending problem.
And the next question will be how us having casinos help The white population right??

1. Removal of 6,292 welfare reciepients Unfortunatly native
2. taking care of our own roads
3. Our own law enforement
4. our own fire departments
5. Hospitals
6. Schooling
7. The option to creat additional busness grant to remain soverign
for each person(So there is a plan)
So please dont think for a second we just get that money and blow it.
SO again please learn or you'll just look like an ass

Yeah for the indians-they seem to be the only ones with money. Money they want to spend in New York State, providing jobs for many people. Perhaps they should run NYS-
Also, with lots of people out of jobs why are the casino's always filled with people spending their money? Gamblers are using their welfare money, their unemployment money and other sources to spend in the casino's, that's why the indians have all the money and can get the jobs done. People who are "sucking" off the goverment should not be allowed in casino's because people like me have to pay for them and their kids. I resent that as do many other people. I know several people who suck off the goverment, they get all kinds of benefits for free, because we are paying for them while the parents are at the casino's-do you think they re-pay the goverment? I enjoy going to the casino's and spending the money that I have honestly earned by working hard and paying taxes. My taxes however are paying for these lazy-ass people to go play a couple times a week. When I was younger, had I known, I too would have considered having several children, by different daddy's, just so someone else could take care of them. I'd have medical insurance for free and anything I need, food stamps etc., I've been working my whole life and have little to show for it so far-yet those on welfare seem to have more then me.
Let the indians take over.....It may improve NYS.

Oh boy.

You should learn a thing or two about interpreting context. I was responding to somebody from Mohawk territory who was making what I saw was a good point about the encroachment of their own territory by the Seneca Nation.

As far as the gambling as a tradition goes, I happen to know that both gambling and tobacco are staples of Iroquoian culture. Speaking of which dish game is a more accurate comparison than snow snake, but I understand your point.

However a lot of "traditionalists" who follow the much later teachings of Handsome Lake and attend longhouse are taught to oppose gambling, which is why the option of persuing gaming narrowly passed. In this sense the concept of gambling has a duality in Seneca culture, it is both accepted and opposed depending on which period of history you throw a dart at.

As far as the rest of your rant, you are barking up the wrong tree. I am an advocate for tribal seperation from state authority but I am also pragmatic enough to realize that this is going to have to resemble the two row wampum belt, with two seperate governing entities presiding equally side by side as opposed to against each other. As it stands right now I agree that tribal independence is a joke due to forced attachment to state and federal programs which are fading into the past.

What I would suggest to you is to not let your passions carry you in the direction of tribal nazism. Too often the bitterness and the frustration at not getting through to ignorant racists in your midst (ignorant because they don't even understand that they are being racist) leads to corresponding racism and stereotyping. And you can't allow institutional bodies, be they the SNI government, the longhouse community, the City or state government, any consortium of business/political/religious interests to be taken verbatim. As a free thinker, which is the antithesis of the old way of thinking, it is your job to be always critical and always skeptical of any body of authority, since there is no case of any such body being pure.
