COLDSPRING, N.Y.(AP)— Authorities are trying to identify the human remains that were found by a fisherman along the shore of a remote western New York reservoir.

Capt. Bob Yale of the Cattaraugus (kat-uh-RAW'-gus) County Sheriff's Department says the skeletal remains were found Saturday afternoon by a man fishing at the Allegany (al-leh-GAYE'-nee) Reservoir near Salamanca, 50 miles south of Buffalo.

Yale said it wasn't immediately known if the person was male or female, or if foul play was involved in the person's death.

He said the reservoir's water level had been lowered for the fall, and the remains were found in the mud along the shore.

The reservoir is located on the Pennsylvania border in rugged terrain along the western edge of Allegany State Park.

ONOVILLE, N.Y.(WIVB)- An afternoon outing turned grim for a fisherman. Walking along the water's edge, he found human skeletal remains. Investigators are saying very little about the find on Sunday.

There's plenty of police activity after what appear to be human remains were discovered by a fisherman late Saturday afternoon along the edge of the Allegheny Reservoir in Onoville in Cattaraugus County.

Captain Bob Yale of the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department said, "He came across some skeletal remains. They appear to have been there for quite some time."

The fisherman made the discovery and immediately went for help.

Scott Siller works at a business not far from where the remains were discovered.

"He was pretty shook up when he came in. He was as white as a ghost and saying he found a body, he had found a body. I need to talk to somebody," said Siller.

Because of darkness Saturday, authorities returned to the location to carefully remove the remains.

It's very early in the investigation.

"We really don't have enough to make a determination if was foul play, a drowning or what," explained Captain Yale.

"He could make out the skull. But he couldn't tell if was male or female," Siller said.

The reservoir is located in a remote wooded area. The water is purposely lowered in the fall.

"It's very remote. The water's receded which made the remains come to the surface. They were found in the mud along the water's edge," Captain Yale said.

No missing persons have been reported in Cattaraugus County.

Authorities told News 4 that forensic specialists will be contacted to aid in the investigation.

OK, so I dont understand how this statement can be made....
"No missing persons have been reported in Cattaraugus County."
Are there not people in the area trying to review cold cases from cattaraugus county that include missing person(s)? Some of us were told we couldn't get information regarding these cases because they were still open cases... so that statement is a contradiction in itself.
Probably if it was a skeleteon the remains werent from last week... the authorities in Cattaraugus county arent looking so hot lately

I was taken aback, myself, when they said there was no missing people in Cat Co. What about Josephine?

Corie Anderson was the first missing person that I thought about, too.

Several miles. Not in the same area at all. This body was found in the marina area. Close to a somewhat busy state road The sheriff was on a logging road. I live about 3 miles from the marina area. Easy to drop off someone

someone would have to think were a real bunch of idiots for us to believe that the sheriff committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest....
