well it just goes to show you that no one is safe in todays economy. maybe now the city would understand and show some compassion for other city residents that have been put in the same situation. especialy in the DPW and other pay or surrender departments.

Its going to get worse. But even though my job is also at high risk of being cut, I think its time the City of Salamanca stop relying on this money, this type of money that had a finite span anyway (reminds me of Blood Diamonds). Has it paid the payments on meaningful infrastructure? You Bet it has. While most of us take it for granted that you turn on a light switch and there is power and a faucet turn produces water, or even the street you drive on has been re-paved, I have seen what it takes to deliver it on a day to day basis. That said, the City functioned before that Casino was ever a gleam in anyone's eyes-white or native it worked within the budget it had. There is talk of possibly resurrecting the City's share through direct talks with the Seneca's but if I were them, I wouldn't ever pay another dime again. Some will argue that the City needed [the money] to compensate for the houses being taken off the tax rolls but it didn't produce one new house on the land the city owns off of State Park Ave. Instead someone thought we should have a water park instead and hired people whose sole purpose was the steering of this pipe dream. Two thirds of the Year we spend in cold and cooler temps and we need a water park? At the end of narrow street with no foreseeable exit ramps? Do we have a Chain Store like Target or Best Buy or even a K-Mart, Nope but we need 1500+ mostly seasonal jobs at a water park. Access to this money has spoiled this municipality like a kid at college waiting for the check from ma and pa. I can get a job anywhere else but I want to be here contributing to the tax base and livelihood of this community. I believe that now that the money is off the table, we should learn to live without it, even if it does get negotiated back, it shouldn't be used as it has been- a means to dream out of the scope of reality. And I don't believe anyone in the City government acted in a way contrary to human nature or out of deceit. I just think there wasn't enough realistic budgeting put in place. I wish all those people who got laid off goodluck, especially in this economy. Its truly a nightmare. I hope in the coming months or years Salamanca residents can live with the aftermath of this decision by the Senecas and the bad budgeting decisions by this City Government that ultimately resulted in the layoffs, this is only Act II of a script-less play, or would a Chess analogy be better?

49 jobs--what about the thousand jobs lost when mail-order went under? Where was the mayor and council then? Where was the letters and support for those people? Most were non-native but must not have been family of the mayor and council so they didn't care. It's sad that anyone has to lose their job. As for the mayor and council speaking out now--TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE!

first off no one is being used or played as a pawn...natives and non-natives work together incase some of you havent noticed.yes there were way more than 49 that lost their job or had hours cut back due to the government....had they payed any attention to those non natives that worked for the natives...there were some that were'nt smokers....they jus enjoyed their job as well as needing that job
second...nobody should be placing blame before the government gets their share of blame..it was the government....governor patterson who started all this to begin with
thirdly..as for the falling leaves festival....do you realize that the children are getting punished?????? what did they do to deserve that let alone the older generations who come every year????? thats definately not a resolution....its a punishment to those who are innocent...seriously...come on people

This whole city is being punished and both Native and Non-Natives are being used as pawns! None of it really makes any sense! First the Government complains because the post office is in trouble, so they decide to stop cigarette mail sales! What?

Now the Nation takes away money from the City that not only makes the city run but provides services that also benefits their own people! This is a no-win situation no matter what the outcome is!

please dont be stupid

Even if there were a lot of police officers laid off there really
wasn't a need for the hiring of so many after the casino funds were
brought in. Yes, I'm a proponent of law enforcement, but it wasn't necessary to hire so many officers and spend needless money on so much equipment, especially now that it isn't being used!
Salamanca through out the years have been protected really well
when the department had mostly a full time force that relates to the community, even those who are/were arrested were treated with respect!
