I just heard about this today. I think that its a shame that some people have nothing better to do than to stir up a bunch of crap for others. I have lived in Jamestown for about a year now, and I enjoy being able to stop by the storage units and yard sales, to chat with the vendors there, and being able to find a good bargain.

I have talked to a few of these vendors, and it seems to me that some, if not most are either on disability or just on a low fixed income. They are just trying to help support themselves and their families. After paying rent or mortgage, utilities, buying meds, and just general living expenses, there's just not enough left to buy groceries.

It seems to me that most ppl would want them to continue trying to support themselves in an honest way, rather than having to get government assistance such as food stamps or vouchers for heat, lights, etc. There are enough people getting assistance that just sell their food stamps and vouchers to buy drugs or whatever.

I think that Jamestown City Council should find better things to do with their time than to worry about someone trying to feed themselves and their families. And the gentleman that has already made his fortune in retail, should not be able to say what anyone else can do to try to support themselves. There are more people that live in Jamestown, than just the old money names here.

I was told today that it was all in the paper about a month ago, but I missed it.

I was told that there is a certain individual that used to be in retail business that started all of this. They are talking about banning yard sales in Jamestown, or at least only allowing people to have a certain # of yard sales per year. It is mainly focused on the vendors that set up at the storage units, but will in turn affect so many more.

I own property in the city limits, and don't think that it's right that anyone can tell me wheather or not I can have a yardsale or how many I can have. I haven't had any, but this is my property and I paid good money for it and I pay my taxes.

The vendors that have their sales at these storage units are hard working people that are just trying to make ends meet. They are selling used goods that have already been taxed when bought new. This person is trying to have it where these vendors have to buy a license or permit to have a yard sale, and pay taxes on what they sell.

According to what I have heard, City council is currently in the process of deciding on this matter. I think as citizens of Jamestown, we should stand up and not be bullied. These people are not hurting anyone and should be left alone.

Think about what you are saying. They are not claiming that income. Not saying they don't need it but your statement was dumb. They can make all they want and there is no way they would claim it. Limit the # of yard sales a person can have in a year. Otherwise they are running a buisness. Without the responsibilities of a legit buisness owner.

OK. Thanks for your opinion. I guess my statement is dumb because "YOU" don't agree with me.
It's not like these people are getting rich. They are simply tring to support themselves.
Maybe your right. Lets shut em down and put them on food stamps, and any other form of government assistance that we can think of. Then all of us as taxpayers can support them, instead of allowing them to support themselves.

I will bet they are already getting assistance and beating the system with the extra income. How can you go to church and then steal from the system that is in place? One yard sale a month should be sufficent. They are running a buisness! Pay taxes on it if you make enough. Everyone here runs to church and then they like to do everything without a license or paying taxes. Most of them wouldn't even have to pay taxes due to not making enough. However, if you do and you're not paying you are a thief. Same goes for the license. Tax money goes towards our roads, schools, etc. But I guess stealing from the rest of the community, including our children, is O.K.

Why pay taxes on what has already been taxed?

I have to disagree with you on "Everyone here runs to church and then they like to do everything without a license or paying taxes". I personally pay several hundred dollars each year for my professional license. I pay dearly in taxes, and I haven't attended church here in a while. So, NO not "Everyone here runs to church and then they like to do everything without a license or paying taxes"

BTW.... Are you a politian? You seem awfully worried about them paying their taxes.

Old inventory is destroyed everyday. This keeps people buying new goods, keeping industry going. As far as taxes, our system already taxes our goods at least a couple of times. It's just the way it is until it is changed. In many counties in the US, it is illegal to go garbage picking That helps to keeps you buying new. Personally, I think the current system stinks. I think I would like to see the fair tax emplemented. I saw a post on here about a church giving away free clothes and they had to tell some dealers they would be turned away if caught. I guess they're trying to just make a living by taking from the truly needy.

Not all vendors are like that. I think that it is very unfair to base an opinion of all vendors, based on "hear say" about one.

Just like it's not right for you to say all people here run to church and don't pay taxes. Some people have such a small town mentality that they think that if one person does something, then all people must do the same.

Oh well. I guess this is what makes life interesting. We all have our own opinions, and apparently, you and I disagree.

Thank God for the 5th amendment.

You are a professional. What if someone was doing your profession without a license or paying taxes therefore cutting prices on the services they offer. Then, because you are on the up and up, you cannot afford to cut yours. Eventually, taking your living away from you. How would you feel then? Maybe it doesn't seem like much to you, but those people who are trying to make their living legitimately, are being hurt by these so called yard sales. Yard sales don't last for years on end.

I do understand what you are saying. However if I offered products or services, I would want to have such a rapport with my customer, that I wouldn't have to worry about them going else where.

I think that this decision should not be made by just a few. Allow people to vote before any final decision is made. I just really don't like the fact that it may come down to the fact that these people might tell me that I can only have a certain # of yard sales each year.

What if a few of my friends may want to have a yard sale in my yard. I may want to have one a couple times a year. How is this gonna work. Noone pays my property taxes but me. I pay county and city tax on my property. Is that not enough.

It just really bothers me that a small group (City Council) can make a decision for so many people, when they may not take into consideration all aspects.

Also, it only took one previous retailer to start all this crap. I heard that its because he wants to start selling out of his old store and that he is afraid that these vendors will hurt his business. Oh the luxury of owning a large store building. I'm sorry, but I don't feel sorry for him.

Ok, let these yard sales go on but in that case do not make anyone have a buisness license or collect tax for the goods they sale. I can't say I like the system that is in place but I do believe in a level playing field. Your profession is protected by laws. You are living in a fantasy world if you think someone cutting your fees in half would not eventually put a hurting on you, especially if there were several doing it. Personally, I like going to yard sales. In many places these laws are already in place - its called change. Sometimes brought on by outsiders and sometimes by old time locals. It's never easy to accept when you don't like it or in some cases don't understand why it would be good overall. As far as the city council, that is what they are there for. Look at some issues going on in our country. Do we get to vote on them? Not usually. As for looking at all aspects, that would be why there is more than one of them. They are elected officials hopefully educated and still retaining enough common sense to make good choices for all of us. I have often thought they were to blame for the condition of this county. If everytime they try to change something they catch a bunch of crap they may as well leave things the way they are. I really would like to see Fentress prosper but that will take change. This county is very slow to change and you can see where its at. It has so much to offer in this area but its being held back because people are afraid of change.

Bob Lane (who doesn't even live in our county Strikes again ),Problem is easily solved.Move out of the city limits and live as you choose.Mr Lane is far beyond a pest.Since he and others were shown that the old York building WILL NOT be torn down ,he wasn't put out of business ,he just changed targets.Last week it was the clutter(or what HE deemed so)in someone yard which had to be cleaned up or a fine would come. The week before that it was the loose animals that needed to be tied up or a fine would come .This week it is the Rental Storage building People across from Wal-Mart who (WAL-MART)says is detracting from their business arrangement with the City.People can you not see ,,,,,,,,,,,BOOB LANE has got to go..Put pressure on the council members to can this self imposed Dictator..............

Looks like this guy is trying to get with the program! Who wants loose dogs running around? Who wants to live next door to the god awful clutter of someone who doesn't care? It's about time Fentress was thrown into the 21st century. There are plenty of opportunities to have a yard sale or sell your wares at the local flea market, rather than leaving your crap laying around 24/7, 365. I say, way to go, Bob.

You are talking like these people are getting rich on there yard sales. I have had yard sales most of my life and I never got rich. I raised two children by yard sales because I didn't get any child support. I didn't make enough money at my job so I had yard sales or set up at a flea market to keep from getting food stamps or government help. That is what most of these people are doing. I know most of them and a very small percent of them are cheating the system. They are just working very hard to make a few extra dollars to get by. If you are a business person and you say that you have never cut corners or that you have always paid every cent of taxes that you owe then you are ether the biggest lair in this county or you have brain damage. I bet you don't say a word about all of the people that are selling drugs. They are not paying taxes. They are ruining lives. The City Conical should be more concerned about something like that and leave people that are just trying to get by along.

WAY TO GO BOB!!!! Keep playing Hitler and telling people what they can do on there own property that they are paying payments on and are paying taxes on. There are auto junk yards with car parts everywhere, there are auto repair places with junk everywhere, Potters discount has junk on top of junk. OH but it has a chain fence so that makes it all right. If you think that stopping yard sales is going to put this county into the 21st century you need to wake up. The people that depend on yard sales to feed there children don't leave there items laying around 24/7. A few that don't care will, so fine them and don't punish everyone for there mistakes.

I agree that the City Council should worry more about other things, and leave the yard sales alone. The ones having yard sales at the storage buildings seem to always put their belongings away each day. I can not recall ever passing by there and seeing anything left out while the vendors were not there.

Apparently the people that are so disturbed about this, seem to be the ones that were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. They don't know what it's like to want for things, much less need for anything. They don't know what it's like nor do they have sympathy for single parents that
have to depend on 'dead beat moms or dads' to be able to feed their kids. They don't know or care that these people have to work very hard for everything that they have, and then still not have the means to make ends meet.
