For those of you who struggle with the writer's intent on Topix, I just asked a framed question. In 1953, the U.S. Empire toppled Iran's popular and democratically elected leader. What ensued was a horrendous bloodbath. In 1979, Iran threw-off the U.S. Empire and established a theo-democracy, something the U.S. might want to eventually try. Out of hatred and vengeance, in 1980 the U.S. encouraged Saddam Hussein to attack Iran, supplying him with $3 billion in military weaponry.(Sadly, one million Iranians and Iraqis were killed.) From 1980-1987, the U.S. fought Iran over control of the Persian Gulf and its resources. During this time, the U.S. committed one of the worst war crimes in the 20th Century. Its naval destroyer, the USS Vincennes, shot down an Iranian passenger plane, killing 296 innocent civilians, including 66 children. Iran has just arrested 31 U.S. CIA spies. The U.S. has several terrorist cells operating in Iran. While severl Iranian scientists have been assassinated, some of its installations have been bombed and destroyed. Iran claims these acts of war were caused by the U.S. The U.S. has already attacked Iran. It is already at war with Iran. In 2012, will passive and incompetent U.S. citizens continue to "sleep-walk" through history? Will they continue to allow their government and poltiical leaders to committ war crimes? Stay tuned!

Stay tuned! It sure sounds like you have a real hard-on for the United States of America. By the way, the U.S. is a country, not an empire.:)

Soldier...Which nation in the world has been the only nation to have ever used nuclear weapons, killing over 200,000 civilians (including American P.O.W.'s who were in Nagasaki and Hiroshima)? I will give you a clue: The acronym is U.S.A. Iran merely wants to develop nuclear enrichment to power hospitals and clinics and universities, just like the U.S. Does not Iran have the same right as the U.S. do develop nuclear energies for civilian purposes?(This is a rhetorical question.)
Eloteman...Unlike you, I am not addicted to the violent "pornography" and commercialization of war.
Swin...Review what a frame question is and the main point of my post.
Funny and Really...Your altnernative realities to our dominant and myopic culture and hubris is truly inspirational and hopeful.
(By the way Eloteman, with 1,000, yes, 1,000 American military and naval bases and installations around the world, not to mention tens of thousands of corporate outlets and franchises protected by "professional" and paramilitary forces, it is utterly illogical to think that the U.S. in not an empire. Please check again in a dictionary the various terminologies regarding "empire." Who knows, this might even improve your vocabulary and thinking skills, not to mention your critical application skills which are evidently sorely lacking.)

We see you do your research before opening your mouth unlike other people. Religion is the reason why so much conflict exists. Without religion, the world would be a better place. You don't need a manual with fairy tales to teach morality. You just need rational thinking and a basic understanding of humanity.

Eloteman...Here is a novel idea regarding America: Why not love it AND change it? With over 7 million people homeless tonight in the U.S. and 18 million vacant homes, with over 26 million uemployed and numerous ongoing wars around the world, not to mention the top 5 percent of the richest Americans owning 80 percent the wealth and 7 heirs to the WalMart Corporation as wealthy as the botom 60 million Americans-don't you agree that a "little" change would do America good? Of course it might be difficult for someone like you, an "either or" thinker, to shift to a "and also" thinker. Someone once said that hypocrisy was a lie in action. It also distorts memory and perception and clouds the imagination. Soldier...Where have you been? The Cold War was "really" World War III. The ongoing U.S, Empire's corporate wars against the poor, along with its ts thodicy, is World War IV. Perhaps you should open less ammo pouches and open your eyes and your mind more. Lol...CORRECTION!!! Like your average secularist, you mistakenly believe that most wars have been fought over religion and faith. Both WWI and WWII, that killed 40 million people, were fought over resources and materialism. The Cold war, which killed an estimated 60 million, was fought over secular ideologies, or market economies versus communism. The current U.S. wars in the Middle East and Central Asia are being fought over materialism, resources, and the tyranny of the market place too. Resource wars have by far killed more people that religious wars. The first casualty of war, of course, is truth. You have displayed this by your lack of understanding and knowledge.

Prophet, you have good points, but I think your view is a bit too cynical for me. First, I believe that, while there are material interests in our wars, there are also genuine concerns for human welfare that have influence in our government's decisions. Second, I take issue with your terminology regarding America: America isn't an empire, and it isn't one continuous single entity that is taking advantage of everyone. The government is always changing, and the way the country is run is as well. You can't just say 'America is waging war on the poor'. You can say the American elite is, or those in power are, but you have to also acknowledge that America is not completely comprised by those parties.
You are, however, correct in stating that wars are hardly ever truly caused by religion. Even the crusades were driven by economic and political issues, with Christianity as a front to make the wars popular.
I also think that allowing religion to be any part of government would be a terrible idea, because even though religion isn't usually a direct cause of war, it is a direct cause of persecution, hatred, and violence. People should believe what they want, and not push it on others or disrespect the rights of other people.

Unreal... You might be surprised to know that George Washington, James Madison, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, etc... wanted to make religion a part of America's national life. They believed religion was necessary for the foundation of every civilization, namely, that it taught morality and ethics which without, no society can function. They also believed differing faiths should be tolerated, just like differing economies, politics, philosophies, languages, sciences, etc... Is it possible to de-compartimentalize-keep it personal and private and separated from the public sphere-certain aspects of a person's faith? Why stop with faith? Should one include politics, economics, sports, entertainment, even ethics? Why should sports and entertainment in public be tolerated but not religious faith?(Don't forget the Soccer Wars!!!) Do you see where this is leading? Just as politics and economics and sports and language are tolerated in the public theater, why not religion? America's Founding Fathers would be aghast to see the anomie-a society without any morals and ethics-occurring in the U.S. today. Like science and medicine and technologies, religion can also provide meaning and guidance, can it not?
