Dispute over music leads to shooting

Debbie Brown was celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday with her mother and her own son. About 20 family members and friends were at her Tennessee Avenue home having a barbecue and crawfish boil, listening to music and talking. But after most of the guests had left, around 10:15 p.m., Bennie Butler, 63, of 6 Tennessee Ave. walked across the street from his own home to 5 Tennessee Ave. and shot Brown, 43, and Brian Amos, 28 -- the fiancé of Brown's sister, police say. Butler has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a felon, authorities reported. Information about his previous conviction was unavailable.
