From only my own personal obersvations, unless you live in a subdivision where they have mailboxes on both sides - or live right in town where mailboxes are on your door...mailboxes will always be on a particular side of the street. Having mailboxes on both sides of the highway would double the standard amount of time it takes the carrier to deliver your mail as well as place that carrier more in harms way having to dart onto and off of the shoulder in highway traffic.I think an important issue to consider is why are individuals having to cross busy roads/streets to get their mail. I see it all the time in the community I live in and have always felt there was a safety concern, especially for elderly individuals. Yes, we all need to be more alert while drivng, but unfortunately accidents happen.
I think we should all say a prayer for this family who has lost a wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
I live on a highway and the mailboxes are on one side of the street.
I grew up in Alexandria in city limits and our mailboxes were on the same side of the street.
This was such a horrible and sad thing to have happened to this woman and her family. Doubling the carriers' route though...that's more money spent into the United States Postal Service that will filter to everyone.
I know people in their 60's and they're still pretty spry and alert for their age :)
