I think an important issue to consider is why are individuals having to cross busy roads/streets to get their mail. I see it all the time in the community I live in and have always felt there was a safety concern, especially for elderly individuals. Yes, we all need to be more alert while drivng, but unfortunately accidents happen.
I think we should all say a prayer for this family who has lost a wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
From only my own personal obersvations, unless you live in a subdivision where they have mailboxes on both sides - or live right in town where mailboxes are on your door...mailboxes will always be on a particular side of the street. Having mailboxes on both sides of the highway would double the standard amount of time it takes the carrier to deliver your mail as well as place that carrier more in harms way having to dart onto and off of the shoulder in highway traffic.

I live on a highway and the mailboxes are on one side of the street.

I grew up in Alexandria in city limits and our mailboxes were on the same side of the street.

This was such a horrible and sad thing to have happened to this woman and her family. Doubling the carriers' route though...that's more money spent into the United States Postal Service that will filter to everyone.

I know people in their 60's and they're still pretty spry and alert for their age :)

I am so sorry that this lady died due to being hit by a vehicle when getting her newspaper. But where do you get that the SUV killed her? Who was driving the SUV? It could have been any vehicle, a Ford Focus. It is clearly the driver who is at fault, not the vehicle he/she was driving. It is absurd to blame a car. Was it driving itself?
Exactly,

Prayers for this poor woman and her family.

What the heck? They have to take this into investigation so they can piece it together. However, a child is hit & killed, by a car and there is NO investigation, only to be excused by the driver fall asleep... The children were on the curb - that lady came over 2 lanes and struck them. This lady was crossing the street. Maybe this driver should say he did not see her because he too was sleep. Amazing..........
You are wrong, there are always investigations in cases like this and other serious ones.

you know, just because vehicles dominate the nation, doesn't mean there are no more pedestrians around.

drivers are supposed to be taught to watch carefully while driving, so this sort of thing doesn't happen.

apparently the driver wasn't under the influence of anything, or he would have been arrested at the scene.

that only makes his responsibility greater, since he doesn't even have the dubious excuse of being drunk or high at the time his suv ran into this woman.

I wondered that too ... It always seems like the drivers of road colored vehicles have trouble turning their lights on.
Hopefully I am missing your joke, if not you really missed one.

You must consider the source; this was an “AP” story. Remember that they are owned and run by liberals. We like to call them the “Drive By” media. Anytime they can take a pot-shot at a SUV (Al Gore’s enemy) they will do it in a heartbeat.

The liberals believe a SUV is a vehicle with it own mind and heart. It is an evil demon that must be done away with.. It is a religion with them.

The Anderson Herald is an unabashedly liberal newspaper in itself; it has become worse since it bought out by a company in “Liberal Land” up North in New England somewhere. I would be willing to wager that its Staff is at least 95% liberal.

The Anderson Herald will publish a story, ask for comments, and if you do comment it might take them up to a week sometimes to post your comment, if indeed at all.

I have e-mailed them in the past to ask why this is, and they don’t even bother to answer

Most of the good people left there some-time ago. I finally got fed up with them and canceled my subscription. The have quite a few rabid liberals who post articles there on a regular basis, the Herald loves to feature them. They are “as one” with nature.

The Herald didn’t have that much going for it anyway; it is only a few pages with mostly advertising in it. I don’t miss it at all.

The accident happened at 8:45am Wednesday morning. Yesterday's afternoon "online story" stated the driver was headed west and he lived in Indianapolis. The speed limit is only 55, and yes - some people do spped through there. My prayers are with both families.....
At this time of the year the sun is up very bright in the East at these early hours. I know I must cross the street to get to my mailbox also. The sun is so bright I can hardly see looking into the sun, which she must have been doing.

With the noise from both highways 28 and 9 it might have also been hard for her to hear. At her age she might have not had perfect hearing.

She might not have had good eye sight.

That particular stretch of land has a 55 MPH speed zone.

Nobody really knows what happened yet. I pray for both parties and their families in this incident. I think we all should do that.

I blame Day Light Savings and rampant number of runaway SUVs who diregard all laws and have no respect for humans. SUVs need to be taught a lesson, maybe some jail time for the SUV will serve as a wake-up call to other SUVs contemplating similar actions.
You sound like a typical liberal, let’s blame the republicans (Mitch Daniels) for DLS and let’s blame the evil SUVs and their kill seeking drivers that own them.

Isn’t that the way it goes?

The fact that is was an SUV is an important fact in vehicle-pedestrian accidents. A pedestrian hit by an SUV is more than twice as likely to die than if they were hit by a car at the same speed. A car has safety regulations that flip the pedestrian onto the (relatively) soft hood. An SUV knocks the person under the vehicle, making it easier to run over them. I don't know anything about this case though, if it was traveling at 60 miles an hour, it would have killed her regardless of what they were driving.
An SUV also has more steel around the driver allowing more protection to the occupants. That is a good thing.

Let us not forget that for as long as you can remember, big tucks, semi tractors, large road construction vehicle’s and many larger means of transportation has always been with us on all roads.

You can get rid of all the SUV’s you want but big trucks will always be with us.

Road accidents happen every-day, they are just what they are,“accidents” They come in all sizes.

WTF?? She didn't say anything derogatory about your Mother. She was commenting on the ridiculous headline. So far as I've read, no one is faulting your Mother.
If indeed this was your Mother, I'm sorry for your loss.

I am very serious. Do you want proof?

Who is pushing getting rid of SUV’s? Answer-the Global warming advocates.

Who are the advocates? They are groups who vote exclusively for liberals who make laws that give them what they want.

It’s something like-“You scratch my back- I’ll scratch yours”

These advocates are better known in some circles as “environmental whacko’s”

Again, I am serious…”dead serious”

They were being facetious. People on these boards are always blaming DST, Mitch Daniels, etc. for everything. In other words, they weren't REALLY blaming the SUV. As in they were making a joke. Spelled out enough for you? Not everyone has an agenda.

Before you comment - to tell another what they are, read - please read. If I ever wished I was wrong, this would be the time. Child killed when car hits her, brother Shukri was hit by a car Tuesday evening while riding her pink bicycle in the 4700 block of Central Avenue. Her brother, Hassan Muhammad Ibrahim, 14, was injured in the crash. He remained in critical condition at Methodist Hospital late Wednesday. Police did not arrest the woman who struck the children, and the Marion County prosecutor declined to comment Wednesday about whether charges would be pursued. "If (police) see something they think rises to the level of criminality, they'll bring it to us," said Matthew Symons, the spokesman for Prosecutor Carl Brizzi. "It would be improper for us to speculate on hypothetical situations such as this." Indianapolis metropolitan police said there was no evidence the woman's actions were criminal. The driver, Margaret Graves, 42, had two children in her car. She told police she fell asleep while driving south on Central, police said. Her car crossed the center line and the main travel lane, striking the children. Graves' driver's record shows she had not received even a traffic ticket in the past 20 years.
