All crimes in Marion County have increased in 2006 and 2007. I can't wait to see the stats. on aggravated assualts and car-jackings for 2007. The Mayor, Sheriff and their flunkies tell us Police Consolidation is working just fine. Streetlights haven't stop crime--the cameras don't have an operations center that works. Police reports are a month late getting entered into the system. Please remember this---the brass determine which crimes are entered into the statictics. They lie like hell.

Good ole Indy, one of the highest murder rates in the midwest and now one of the highest car theft rates. Glad I don't live there.

Indy by itself actually had a slight decrease in auto thefts--4100 to 3900. Read the article!

Once again the reporters have jumped to the wrong conclusion, Indy does not have too big of a problem for a city our size. This is why our insurance rates are far less than other big cities. Lets not exagerate the problem.

"When you have a moderate number of auto thefts but a smaller population, you tend to rise higher in these kinds of reports,'' said Frank Scafidi with the Sacramento-based bureau.

Is this Mr. Obvious? I can't believe they quoted this.

One thing they fail to associate is the value of the cars stolen. The past year there has been a dramatic increase in the theft of broken down/junk cars due to their high scrap value. If a large percentage of these cars are older than say 1995 that is the reason for your increase. Just look at all your "junk" tow trucks and guys with trailers around town hauling "junk" cars. Pull em over & see if they have titles for the cars before they hit the scrapyard. Or better yet make sure the scrap yards require titles before they crush them.

It doesn't matter where the city ranks if your car is the one they took.

But said before, a little bit of caution goes along way in preventing your car being stolen.

Besides, leaving your car running, using unnecessary fuel, isn't quite prudent in this day of costly fuel.

One of the highest? It's 50th. Indy, I believe, is the 12th largest city in the U.S., and we are 50th in car thefts. The car theft rate per capita is lower than many cities smaller than us.

A good number of stolen cars in Indy are done by Juveniles. Adult crime but not the same punishment. Thanks to the soft hands of the Juvenile Court, if a kid steals your car, trashes it and is caught, they might just let him off. Ya know, he's just a kid and all. Judges need to start getting tough on these kids. Your, oh well approach isn't working.
You nailed this right on the head and I hate to be the one to bring the bad news but it's going to get worse. Auto theft is now a releasable offense in Marion County Juvenile, meaning a kid steals a car, he goes home in 2-3 hours. An adult steals a car, they get time. A juvenile steals a car, worst they get now is probation, which they all consider a joke.

I'm sure it's much better in Ft. Wayne, which has a reputation to be the biggest blue-collar white trash town in Indiana - if not the midwest. According to the numbers, Ft. Wayne's rate would be higher. I guess it's ok, because you have plenty of strip clubs, liquor stores, and churches to relieve your pain. Good luck with the "downtown revitalization." It's about to get worse for you folks.

Surprised, you might try reading the article BEFORE you write comments which make you look very foolish.

First, it's obvious you did not even read the headline because it clearly states METRO area rises on car-theft list--this means the WHOLE metropolitan area, not just Marion County.

More importantly, if you had actually read the article, then you would have learned that car thefts in the City of Indianapolis DECREASED in 2006.

Glad I don't live in an economically depressed and terminally boring place like Fort Wayne. Apparently, many others agree with me because Indianapolis is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the Midwest.

As for crime, not only does it occur in all areas of the country, the crime that specifically occurs in the Indianapolis area is mostly limited to certain neighborhoods. I appreciate that society still has costs even when the victims of crime are mostly confined to a limited area; however, from a pure safety perspective, most people in Indianapolis are very unlikely to ever be a victim of a serious crime. The vast majority of the area of the city and its suburbs are extremely safe, which I think everyone realizes is true; however, headlines blaring "Most people are perfectly safe!" doesn't sell newspapers.

There should be a law against people who want all of these laws.
