that's shocking and terrible; at 16 they do not have License so how are they driving. the parents should know where their kids are going. it is all the parents fault.
You can drive at the age of 16. Before anyone starts placing blame on the parents of the teens involved, or saying that they were stupid and had no intelligence what so ever, you need to consider what they were like to their friends and family. Also the teens made the mistakes too. Try to think how it would feel if this were to happen to your child and how you would feel if the blame was thrown of your shoulders for your child's death.

Shame on the parents here
Lady you need phychiatric help! NOW, Or Yesterday if possible. You are a troubled person. Try real help instead of Dr Phil. Possibly paying a MD in your area. If you think Dr Phil would think your coments are justified then msybe their is no hope for you.

It is extremely difficult for everyone that is involved with the teens or the parents. We have to be responsible parents and be aware of where our kids are at all times. I understand that teens will try to sneak out, but there is something called respect. Everyone that has written a post is correct in their own way of speaking. If you are taking any of the comments personal then you should look inside yourself to see why you feel the way you do. Really what does blame do anyway. It only makes everyone feel terrible. I also knew one of the kids very well and he was a great kid. When it is a persons time to leave us, life will present the exit, regardless if we like it or not.

I'm sorry, Concerned Parent, but I never understood "when it is a persons time to leave us".If it is written that I have a certain time to leave, then I could go out and do the craziest things I could think of, and not worry, because I won't go until my time is up. Sorry, but it doesn't make sense to me.
Obviously, you really do not understand! There is one promise in life, everyone will exit! So yeah, you could do the craziest things and if it is your time then so be it or you will wind up looking stupid!

yes i do think that the parents should be blamed. I myself is only 16 and my mother and father has perfect control over me, and she wouldnt dare let me out at 2 am. And i can say that i have fun, just not that late in the night.

wingate you dont know what you're talking about. the parents had nothing to do with it. the kids disrespected their parents wishes. and yah they were having a good time until they decided to get in the car and make a decision, but they didnt know it would end up that way.

No. No. No. I knew John jacob deel, he has taught me some of the most important things in my life. His parents raised him well and loved him. Like every kid living life, things were tough. He just wanted to do what everyone wanted to do, get out and drive. The roads where he lived are dark and dangerous... it is a miracle anyone can drive at night. Before you try to be judgmental, realize it could have been you, or you be the parents. It was nothing more than a freak accident. Please do not insult my friends or his family again.

Two years later, more facts are known. The car was thoroughly inspected post-accident. Law enforcement determined that a part broke that caused the driver to lose control. In a panic, the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake and swerved desperately to regain control. When the right-side tires slipped off the pavement(a two foot drop), the minivan rolled. Barrett and Jake were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the third seat. Casey and Colin had on lapbelts in the middle seat and though seriously injured, did survive. Matt and Mike were up front and were wearing their seatbelts.

As nearly as I remember, I don't think the boys that were camping were expected back until the next morning. Their parents would not have suspected that they were out at 2 am. Matt and Mike and gone to bed previously and their mothers did not know they had left the house. Apparently the boys all contacted each other via cell phone.

It was and is a terrible tragedy. Every one of the parents involved has second-guessed themselves a thousand times, but the result remains the same. The mechanical failure caused the accident and it could have happened at any time. In fact, there was a recall of this part after the accident.

Do not ever state that you would never "allow" something to happen, or that your child would never do a certain thing. Fate has a funny way of proving you wrong.
