My first question is why are 4 16 yr olds out at 2 am
secondly why are they all riding together when it is against the law.
Shame on the parents here

Do you have children? How dare you blame the parents when they are greiving the loss of their son! Kids do silly things all the time, and they do stuff they are not allowed!

I am one of the sixteen year olds in this accident. The four boys Casey, Barrett, Colin and Jake, where all getting back from a sleepover camping trip at someone's house. We knew that they were just getting back, and we were going to do the last bit of Spring Break left with them. A spur of th moment meeting to go eat at maybe iHop or something. This wreck was just a freak accident. the roads out there are dark and have steep dropoffs. To pin the blame is not to understand the situation. It could have happened to anyone. it's no one's fault.

I have 5 kids so Yes I do know what it takes to keep them as protected as you can in this society and NOT letting them stay out till 2 a.m is a good way to start. Like Dr. Phil says "say it like it is not like you want it to be"

You can't protect everyone from everything...I know this family, they are great people and love their kids. Abott, your first thought shouldn't be asking why they were out that late, it should be sadness that lives were lost. Obviously, there are things that could have been done differently here...but to blame the parents?? I hope you guys never have to feel this type of pain (whether it be from a car accident, drive by, or cancer)...and if you do...I hope others sympathize with you first before they point their fingers at you and blame you for allowing your child to die. I prefer to stay away from Irvine, from this thread it looks like there are some cold hearted people there.

How in the world could you blame the parents! I Go to church with Colin, and he is one of my Best Friends and i know pretty much alot about the accident and yes they shouldnt have been out but no its no ones fault!!! It was spring break and kids do crazy things. I knew Barrett too and all they wanted to do was have a little fun! I dont live that far from farmer rd and it is a bad road and this isnt the 1st time someone has died! I feel bad for the Spence and the Deel family!

Hmmm. Blaming parents.... Well, the parents are the head of the household, and they should have rules and not give in to whatever kids want, spring break or not. On the other hand, regardless of what one does, others may not follow along. Kids make their own decisions, right or wrong, and some pay the ultimate consequence. Yes, accidents happen, but 16yos should not be out at 2am regardless of "plans" or "spring break" or any other nonsense.

You can't lock kids inside. Sometimes teens will just be teens. They will do stupid things. I read that Speed was definately an issue. And it was under investigation whether the two that died were in fact wearing seatbelts. The driver, and passenger who wrote above, Micahel Von Roeder walked away with minor scrapes/bruises. Colin was seriously injured and Casey had injuries. Fact is, seat belts save. Buckle Up! And SLOW down

Dear Michael Von Roeder;

I am not putting blame on you or any of the others involved, nor any of these parents. But do you really think that speed was not a factor? I am sorry for what you have gone through, losing friends must be incredibly difficult, especially being so yount. And the trama of the accident, I am sure has changed you forever. So if you had the chance to talk to a group of teens what would you tell them you learned from this? What would you say? Would you tell them it CAN happen to you? Would you encourage them to slow down, especially at night on dark country roads? Would you tell them to Buckle up?

We can't change what's happened. But we can try to prevent.

Teens...we LOVE you...we don't want to see you hurt. We put restrictions on you because we have wisdom, that you dont have. You are at a tender carefree time in your lives. We don't limit you to be mean we limit you because we want you around for a LONG time.

Please Don't Drink an Drive. Please SLOW DOWN. Please BUCKLE UP. And please obey the laws, they are in place to save lives, not restrict them.

What would be extremely valuable is for this event not to scare people, but to teach them something worth while. Most road accidents are caused by adolesence. If this accident cn do anything is to teach teens just how important road safety is, and how dire these consequences are.

hey r5kids. dont talk about something you dont understand!@@@#$@# i knew jake. and i see colin and casey almost everyday. this accident is a big deal so dont dumb it down. everyone has perfect hindsight. i agree they shouldnt have been out but dont ever say shame on the parents when you dont know them! thats rude and offensive.

and just in case more people end up reading this, casey's ankle is better he got his cast off and colin had to have another surgery to fix his neck and his arm has a metal device in it so he is still recovering. pray for them please. mrs. deel also just went through a mothers day without her son so include her in your prayers too. thanks.

r5kids you have no idea what you are talking about. i knew almost everyone in that car. and i was with them before the accident. you cant keep your kids locked up forever. you may think that they are the perfect little angles. but when they get around their peers they will do stupid stuff. its called peer pressure. every teen faces it. and to michael von roder...one question...do you know if my best guy friend jake was wearing a sealt belt or not? i would really like to know!

that's shocking and terrible; at 16 they do not have License so how are they driving. the parents should know where their kids are going. it is all the parents fault.

I knew one of the kids that died. He was hilarious he screwed up a lot, and I screwed up along with him. You have no right to place blame on the parents or any of the teens involved including my friend.

This is in regard to Kate's comment; shown below:

To tell you th truth we do not know who is to blame for the incident but no one has a right to come on to a comment board and insult the teens involved memories.

This comment is from a friend who is worried about their friends memory.
