These big money devlopers don't give a damn what the local people think anyway. They just see a profit to be made. WTF?

local thought

Actually some of the locals actually like this idea

|
Why
|
It's people like "Angry Citizen" from "San Francisco" that needs to tend to their own needs and work on the San Francisco issues like banning firearms and handing out city-issued condoms.
|
|
why

why do people hate this so much? With gas prices at such a high right now, this could help the average family a little

As a former county planning commissioner, I believe it would be far more sensible to redevelop State Street and some of the side streets from Talmage Road north to Low Gap (or beyond) with 2-3 stories of condos over shops, along the lines of the new and very attractive Courtside Village on Sebastopol Avenue in west Santa Rosa? That should boost downtown commerce and provide fairly affordable housing, while leaving the Masonite property available for light manufacturing like Retech.
How many nationwide big-box retailers do we need besides Walmart, Home Depot and Staples? Target and Costco just take jobs and profits away from good local retailers like Danny's Vacuum, Mendo-Lake Office or Pomo TV.
Where is there

I think that it is a great idea to expand Ukiah and add stores like Target and Costco. Ukiah is already like a mini Santa Rosa anyways. I think that change is good and that these new plans can bring in new job oppotunities and boost the economy as well. I have been waiting a long time to hear the news of this, because Ukiah is so boring and needs to livin up a little

Most the people I see on here aren't even from here. I wonder where all the people living in supposed new condos are suppose to work? I do real estate and I showed 20 empty homes yesterday, several that are now affordable. So why would we build more homes to be vacant, Windsor fell into that same problem. I grew up here and know we need work.

The last thing we need is more retail. Shop til the local merchant drops. Then you can watch while your property values drop because your down town is boarded up. And we can all work for out of town big box retailers for minimum wage. Fortunatley we will have health care in the form of Medical because none of us will earn a living wage.

Why do we need these new stores? Because WALMART SUCKS, RITE AID SUCKS, STAPES SUCK....we have no real stores here at all. We need stores like best buy, target, costco, and we need REAL RESTAURANTS, like fresh choice, outback, chili's, etc. thats what this town needs!

And once you get bored with Outback and Chilies menu what will you need then.... Shopping is not the answer.

not like I go out to eat everyday, I would be lucky to actually go out to eat once every couple months. but it will be nice to actually HAVE a good place to eat around here. Places like north state cafe not only tastes terrible, the prices are outragous-and not like you can call applebee's a good restaurant since the only people they bother hiring are little teenie boppers who would rather talk on their cell phones or gossip while you are sitting there waiting for an hour to order.....

I can't believe Outback and Chilies would be any different than Applebees. I enjoy fresh Choice occasionally but tire of a cafeteria environments quickly. More food choices would be nice but I would rather not have the canned franchise menu. I use to enjoy going to the Perkins Street Grill on Friday night when they had a piano player.

LOL, believe me, there is a HUGE difference between applebees and outback, they are on different sides of the spectrum!! I can honestly say, Outback blows any steak restaurant away. My point was, there is NO GOOD RESTAURANTS IN UKIAH AT ALL. That we need more of a choice. And a fresh choice would also be a great one because there is no place in town you can go to get a salad bar, buffet style meal.

I would rather see more locally owned, locally grown food of course it needs to be tasty as well.

I'd rather eat at The Broiler, Patron or North State Street Cafe over a chain operation any day!

For example: China Diner Bottle shop El Sombrero Barron Red line burger Mi Pueblito Ellie's/Mutt Hut Jaws fish & chips Marino's Blue bird cafe Schats to name a few-all of these people are very kind and offer a great food service to our community. Places like Applebee's suck - every single thing on the menu taste exactly like the last thing. Not to mention the lack of service...I would much rather pay for a decent meal than a crappppy one. We need jobs, real jobs, not illegal jobs (like watering & guarding marijuana gardens) We need to encourage small businesses and local growth. I would much rather see our community grow from within...

What I'm saying is, we need family orienated REAL restaurants. Plus look how many hundreds of jobs that will create. Many jobs may be around minimum wage, but maybe it will get some of these welfare sucking people off their asses and work for a living like the rest of us.

I agree with Realist.
Though, I do like Patrons, but who can afford to eat there more than once a month? I'm sick of Broiler, if you're not crazy about steak there are no healthy choices.
We need a variety in shopping too, to keep people like me here instead of driving to SR and giving them my money. I'm getting tired of driving to SR twice a month to hit Costco and Target.

Don, if you ever run for an elected office I will not vote for you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I want Costco and Target. I also want Old Navy, Ann Taylor Loft, Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret and William Sonoma. If I can be greedy, I would also ask for Restoration Hardware, Banana Republic, and Pottery Barn.
It's not just minimum wage jobs. A lot of store have commission (I know, I used to work at a shoe store) and they have managers that receive benefits as well as good pay.

I think we need to do a reality check.... have you looked at where the economy is going these days? To be honest most major companies are cutting back on developments, slashing their expansion plans.
With the ATM home equity mortgage & easy credit closed down, people are going to have to start living within their incomes.
What does this have to do with a new massive shopping center?
With the price of oil shooting up equaling fuels costs up, transportation costs of goods up, food costs up (already a 30% increase in the last 2 yrs for staples), impending layoffs, you might think it would be useful to have all this "new business" come into town... a shorter drive.
But think past the immediate side effect.... those costs are going to happen at the big business stores as well... How long will they be able to ship 100,000s of items across the ocean & country and sell them cheaply? The cost of shipping & transporting are skyrocketing. Not to mention, that with the falling dollar, the costs of almost everything that is made outside the USA is going to rise quite quickly.
And how much WILL you actually be able to purchase when your discretionary income has dwindled down to next to nothing. It will be a challenge to keep up with your energy bills, food on the table, and fuel to get to work (at $100 a tankfull) assuming you can hang on to that job. See what I mean? It looks good on paper but the reality is that our world is changing dramatically.
A huge part of our economy is made up right now of "service jobs".... that sector of the economy is built on people spending their extra dollars. What happens when their are no extra dollars to spend? Those jobs go away... that is a huge number of jobs! So when they get laid off, in addition to all the construction workers, mortgage related areas workers, teachers, etc., I'm not sure who will be able to spend much of anything.
Instead of following the old used up out-of-date model, we need to be thinking in new directions that will take advantage of opportunities to grow productively. Buying more "stuff" supports China & the middle east for the most part anyway.
In the meantime you have just thrown a good number of your neighbors and local businesses out of work. Who will be there to build a more localized economy when the "big guys" ditch us 'cause we're too small a return on investment for them. We've lost our local enterprizes, many of which had to "move on" to find some place they could survive.
Instead the challenge should be, IMHO, to create a venture that will be useful in supporting our local economy; as if we were cut off from the "outside world". Cause let me tell you, the corporate guys are going to make tracks out of here pretty darn fast, when the times get tough. They have no vested interest in us, only the dollar.
What a waste of time and energy ANOTHER shopping center would be; and a blight when they ditch US.
