This story is apalling to say the least...however I really can't believe that the newpaper actually released this idiot's s name and mug shot. I always thought precautions were taken tp protect the identity of rape victims. True they didn't say her name but I'm sure it's going to be hard to figure out in Albertville, AL who Gary Dean Helms Jr's mother is !!! Regardless how you feel about her (passed out drunk) no one deserves to be treated like this especially by her own flesh and flood.
I thought the same thing about the release of his name. I've seen many cases in which the name of the perp isn't released because his relationship to the victim is stated and therefor would make the identity of the victim obvious.

The awful crime is accomplished. A crime against the law, but also first of all against all moral principles of a human society. It is awful. I do not think, that it is necessary to accuse mother of lacks of education. This young man was brought up not by one mother, around of it there were the friends, familiar, school, TV, all society, whence it scooped the principles and ideals... I think, if such crimes we are made are guilty all...

Not to excuse the rape, but what sort of example does one think this woman was setting for her sons?
"...passed out drunk on the couch," is not the way I envision my mom. Although not deserving to be raped by her own son, the woman was apparently not raising her kids to have any moral or ethical standards acceptable to society. You sow what you reap.
...actually you reap what you sow...

Hey, for the first time i'm just happy its the parent getting raped. BTW, being a mother doesnt give you a get out of jail free card. I hate to say it, if your kid acts out, you do play a huge part in letting it happen. I dont even know the statistics, but you cannot convince me that all sociopaths are born that way, it's just not true. Besides, maybe next time she wont be so drunk so as to be more alert to the actions of her children. Yeah, he may be 19 but that doesnt make him an adult either. Your ACTIONS make you an adult, NOT YOUR AGE. And if that wasnt true, the legal system wouldnt abide by it. Besides, plenty of 30-40 year olds need a wake up call as to what adulthood actually comprises. Obviously, look at the mom.

I so almost totally agree. In so many of these cases I wonder how much complicity the parent really has if you looked at the situation carefully. I don't mean she deserved to be raped, but that sociopaths are raised by someone. Usually that someone has a long history of making sure the critter is never held responsible for its actions, making excuses for it, not creating any consistent discipline, etc. That being said you might be interested in a recent study of adoptees and psychopathy which seemed to suggest that there is a genetic predisposition.

I don't know how anyone could blame the mother. Did she ask for it to happen? Did she try to get away from him and say 'No'? How can she be blamed for anything when she was RAPED by her own SON? She is the vitim here but is getting victimised by everyone here and soon everyone in the media.

I read where someone said something about meth. Unfortunately meth is bad in the SE United states. Mexican drug cartels are shipping million's in every day. Whether he was on ice or not, does not excuse the sick and vile thing in which he did to his own mother. Whether she was a good mother or a bad mother, also does not excuse what he did. He is a grown man now. He know's right from wrong. I can say if he has mental issues(which IMO to rape your own mother put's you on that list) I can lay some blame on the family for not having him committed long before things came to this sick point. They said he has terrible problems with anger and has for yr's. WHY did the mother never seek help for his anger issues, and get him properly medicated? It doesn't mean he'd take his med's like he should, but to atleast acknoledge it and seek help for him is a start.
I have family in Albertville, Boaz and Guntersville and to those making fun of Alabama this is NOT normal. People in the south are not out sleeping with their damn aunt's,uncle's,Dad's,Mother's, sister's or brother's. That is just some stereotypical crap people in other parts of the country have about the south. I mean if we want to use stereotypes I could say all of those up north talk like they have their mouth full of marble's, but I won't stoop to that childish BS. Making blanket statements only shows your ignorance. This young man needs to be put under the jail. His bond should have been denied. He doesn't even deserve a bond period for a crime like this, whether he has a past record or not.

I agree Chris. I am sure there is additional underlying facts regarding this case. I suppose the media will support what is sensational. I agree, drugs and alcohol probably played a huge role in what happened. As for the mother it is unfortunate that this event took place, however; it will be interesting to hear all the facts, not just what the media is willing to report.

MORE THEN WE KNOW WE MAKE OUT LIKE RAPE IS SOME HOW THE WOMAN DID SOME WORNG. SO HOW DO YOU THINK A WOMAN WOULD FEEL AFTER HER OWN SON RAPE HER. LIKE OTHER HAVE DONE SAID A BAD MOTHER. SHE DID NOT RAISE HIM RIGHT. NO ONE HAVE THE RIGHT TO RAPE ANYONE. WHEN HE WAS A KID SURE HIS MOTHER SAID DONT GROW UP AND RAPE ME.
