Not to excuse the rape, but what sort of example does one think this woman was setting for her sons?

"...passed out drunk on the couch," is not the way I envision my mom. Although not deserving to be raped by her own son, the woman was apparently not raising her kids to have any moral or ethical standards acceptable to society. You sow what you reap.

Whether sober or passed out drunk is not the issue, that is his MOTHER, and to say he should have known better is an extreme understatement. Rape is wrong and to rape anyone is a crime even more so when you commit such acts against someone who brought you into this world. And to do this as a retaliatory act against his brother, what was he thinking? First of, he's not a child. He's 19 years old! If he could do this to his own mother, I wonder how much risk and danger he poses to the entire society.

Sounds like he acted the way he was raised, with no moral standards what so ever. At least he kept it in the family and not someone elses.

my mother raped me. and when i tried to tell the story to my relatives as an adult, i was shunned and disregarded.

sexual abuse and physical violence hurts everyone.

for years, parents have been sexually abusing their children. but we are survivors are not allowed to tell our stories without threats of legal action against us.

the rape of this woman was wrong.

stop the silence - stop sexual abuse in america - speak out against it, and speak out about it.

thank you.

Heinous, heinous, heinous crime. Such crime reduces us to the level of animals. I wonder how many similar such incidents go unreported in the world?

True no one deserves rape, but the problem with society today is that the whole family stucture has broken down. Most american women are working instead of staying at home and taking care of the family. NO, I don't think that women should stay at home all the time or any of that, But It is a simple fact that the more time spent with something (anything) the better the outcome will be. This is especially true with children, if we don't spend quality time with our children and teach them right from wrong they won't know it when they are adults. Yes it is true, even though he may have had a poor excuse for a mother he should have known right from wrong at the age of 19, but it is possible she has shown him that it is ok to be wrong. The truth is none of us know what he went through growing up, but we do know this something is not right with him, for him to be able to do such a unspeakable crime and wether you, I, or, anybody else cares to admit it, WE ARE A PRODUCT OF OUR ENVIOURNMENT. Appearently his enviournment was not a nurturing one as a child.

Simply no excuse for it. The other person said it right. This type of act reduces us to the level of animals. The fact that the woman was passed out drunk is not an issue here. This is a 19 yo adult not a child. These are the type of offenders people should be warned about. I still can't imagine how this person could do something heinous like this to his own mother. It's mind-boggling.

This story is apalling to say the least...however I really can't believe that the newpaper actually released this idiot's s name and mug shot. I always thought precautions were taken tp protect the identity of rape victims. True they didn't say her name but I'm sure it's going to be hard to figure out in Albertville, AL who Gary Dean Helms Jr's mother is !!! Regardless how you feel about her (passed out drunk) no one deserves to be treated like this especially by her own flesh and flood.

So, is MILF a bad term now? I kinda liked to use MILF a lot--I suppose this kid liked to use it a bit more than I.

I'm originally from a town about 45 minutes from Albertville, and knowing the area as I do, I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time until we learn how methamphetamine plays into this equation.
