The Home Computer

If there is a single invention during the last 2+ dacades, an invention which gives everyone some hope that there will be many more changes in the United States during the 21st Century - changes which have been discussed up to this point in time in this manuscript - it has to be the Home Computer with the Internet.

The full magnitude of the tremendous influence of the Internet has yet to be felt in many ways in this country, however, but this chapter will cover just some of the future alterations in the American society the Home Computer with the Internet will most likely bring about.

The thing which makes today's Home Computer so incredibly important is its capacity to store such a huge quantity of data, but on such an incredibly small computer chip. It is a bit like the human brain in terms of storing data, except unlike the human brain, it rarely makes a mistake!

As for what may be expected in the very near future regarding the Home Computer with the Internet, we may start out with an explanation of what changes are about to happen to our various libraries: public libraries, private libraries, college and university libraries, business libraries, and most any other library.

They are all going to become mostly non-existant in the very near future; non-existant at least as we have come to know them today.

In the very near future if someone wants something from any library, it will most likely be found on the Internet, as well. This will include both fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, and well as professional and non-professional research journal articles.

So going to the school or college library to do one's research or term paper, or going to the public library just to get a non-fiction book, both will become a bit passe as the material may be found on the Internet.

For a students in high school or college, this will make the collection of the relevant data for a term paper very easy. The research may be garnered at the home on the computer if the student is in high school, or it may be done in the student's dorm room if he is in a college or university.

Writing a research paper will become significantly less demanding and tedious, expecially when it is compared to the arduous library research methods which were used during the 20th Century.

Shopping for many items will become a bit passe, as well, as it has already begun in earnest all across this country. Very soon now, this Internet shopping begin to become rather massive indeed, and a large number of shopping centers and many stores will become obsolete and therefore have to close.

The prices of many items may go down some, as well, as the "middle man" will probably be cut out of many Internet sales. The item purchased over the Internet will be delivered to your home - or place of business - by mail, or by UPS, or by some other delivery system.

Whole books will begin to be sold over the Internet, and the cost of them will go way down. They will not be delivered to your home, though, as is currently happening by ordering a book over the Internet. You will simply download the manuscript onto your computer, instead.

Moreover, and very significantly, since the Internet has no national boundaries or borders, the public use of the Internet is going to dramatically break down conflicts between and among two or more nations.

The people of one nation will actually get to know some of the citizens of another nation, especially by means of the many "chat channels" on the Internet.

No longer will the leaders of some nations be able to tell their citizens false and/or disruptive information about another country, and therefore fully expect their population to believe it all the time. They will find this nearly impossible because the true facts about the situation will become evident by way of the Internet, especially on one or more of the just mentioned "chat channels."

Moreover, one is currentlY fully able to read most all of the foreign newspapers over the Internet, and the language of the newspaper has been converted to English, as well. Therefore, one may currently read most of the worldly newspapers over the Internet, and these papers all too often have a very diffierently perspective on what is happening in this country than our news media occasionally does.

And all too frequently these foreign newspapers are so very much correct when they significantly disagree with our news nedia and/or politicians, as well.

Money will also become far less important to a politician winning an elective office in this country, with the growing advent of the Internet. Already e-mail addresses may be purchased at a rather low cost when compared to a newspapers, magizines, radio, t.v., and highway ads.

Moreover, unlike any newspaper, magizine, t.v., or radio ad, any Internet ad may be pages and pages long. Therefore, anyone running for an elective office will be able to communicate a very great deal to the average American voter in just one e-mail correspondence.

Money, therefore, won't be nearly so important in most future elections on the local, state, and/or national level. Instead, and hopefully, real facts and figures will be.
