It works this way. 98 percent recieve straight GRH funding through Ramsey County. The reamaning 1 percent are over 65 and recieve Social Security that they have worked for during their lifetime and conributed to. The other 1 percent have a verifiable disability or mental illness and recieve SSI or SSDI. All of those recieving Social Security, SSI or SSDI contribute all but $89.00 to their housing costs. The rest of the housing costs are picked up by Ramsey County GRH

'The rest' and what would that be.
More than the $89 they get for booze money.
The fact is tax payers are paying for this whole debacle.

Who realy cares about 60 guys drinking beer.I would rather pay for this than have my tax dollars go to help illegal immigrants get free health care and public education

How realistic. It is completely true that some people are beyond hope and beyond treatment.(One has only to look at all the people who die in mental institutions, never allowed to be free, to know this as fact.)

This is harm reduction at its finest - and at its saddest.

And still, the moralists crusade against things like this.

I think this is a great idea. I thought about it years ago when trying to figure out a way to help my alcoholic brother. If we can take the stigma away from drinking at this level, maybe, some people can accept and get past it.

When families lived together, the drunk uncle had a place. Now, that we have learned to get away from sick family members, we are all isolated.

Interesting article. Certainly brings up a lot of questions. I, for one, believe that some people are beyond help and this model is an effective method of harm reduction. Not only is it cost effective, but it's a lot kinder than leaving people out on the street to rot. I bet it gets pretty cold in St. Paul too...

It's kind of like the Humane Society. More than likely, unwanted animals are going to be euthanized but it's better than getting killed on the highway. As a recovering alcoholic myself, I know very well that sobriety is a gift of grace. why me and not them, I haven't a clue. It's humbling.

The so called wet house is a slow and painful death. The people that operate this place should be held accountable for allowing these people to consume until death.

There's a whole other side to the story, and that is the family. The family, children, friends of those who suffer from the disease of alcoholism. Who suffer a life of despair because they love one of the unfortunates who will never enjoy sobriety. Al-Anon Family Groups and Alateen are spiritual programs for the adults and children of the unfortunates. These programs show us how to love them, without being held hostage by them. 888-4AL-ANON
