I lived in it for 9 years and I realy didnt see so much he had done. What has he done sence ive moved ??? I go to Independence all the time,all I see is some flower beds and a few streets got fixed, so what has he DONE in ALL the years he has been in that same office? Mayor Ticketed For Running a Stop Sign 3 Days Before Leaving Office

Independence, LA – Outgoing Independence Mayor Phillip Domiano has been mayor of the small town in southeast Louisiana for 28 years. Domiano was defeated earlier this year in a run-off election with Michael Ragusa. With only three days remaining in office, Domiano was stopped by the Independence Police and issued a traffic citation for running a stop sign.

Until recently, the IPD had looked the other way because Domiano had used his leverage as mayor to keep the police department funding low, with officers making about $7/hr and working with no bullet proof vests. With a new mayor set to take to office on July 1, the small town is all abuzz with the hopes of economic growth, better government, and a chance to finally unravel the cloud of corruption that has loomed over the town of 1,600 for 28 years.

Since losing the election in March, Domiano has rarely been seen in the town. Immediately following the election, Domiano stopped showing up for work which he held the positions of mayor, street commissioner, water commissioner and sewer commissioner; however, he has been collecting his salary of nearly $73,000/yr.

On Thursday, June 26, Domiano served notice to the town that he wanted to be paid for his accumulative sick time of approximately one year in the amount of $77,000. Domiano recently underwent knee surgery a few weeks ago; however, any sick time that would be paid to the outgoing mayor would only be from the date of the surgery. Despite taking an unauthorized leave from office and collecting his salary, the mayor refused to turn over possession of the town’s truck, fuel charge card and other equipment citing that he was still mayor. According to federal investigators who have been looking into various allegations of corruption, theft, election fraud, and voter intimidation, the government has said that the Domiano should not be in possession of the town’s property because he is not physically on the job. The federal government refused to comment on the other investigations that are underway in the town or whose names were on the list but we were able to confirm that the list of names is not limited to just the town’s elected officials and includes other elected officials within Tangipahoa Parish.

The video from the police cam specifically shows the outgoing mayor failing to stop at a 4-way intersection and the audio recording specifically has Domaino saying “…give me a break. I only have three days in office.” The officer declined the mayor’s request and issued a citation which will be adjudicated in the court of the town’s new Mayor Michael Ragusa on September 18.
