you and your family will fit right in... not saying any thing negative, but Ga. has a high white and black thing. it's one's own cup of tea,
Some don't think much of this sort of thing, but some think it's a sin. so what ever floats your boat. Ga is like any place. do's and don't kind of thing. Albany need more good folks to help grow.

Albany is full of robbers and thieves. You would do best to find somewhere else to move your family.Killings amoung the black race is a daily thing around here. We are talking about getting out of this place ourselves.

Me and my wife both agree that issues with bi-racial marriages and relationships will be found anywhere that there are people. every town has it's own stint of problems and issues. We are wanting to move to Albany,Ga because it is full of heritage and culture not just Afro-amer. but the human race.

There is no single best answer to questions like yours. It's obviously relative to more than you relate in your question including what you expect to make of it and why you are really making the move and what you put into it etc etc.

Some people say this is a real family town, others see nothing but crime and negative change. Both may be true - as seen through the eyes of each of those folks and depending on where they are and perspective.

The restaurant world is a particularly tough one in this market. Longhorn and Ruby Tuesday were looking for mgrs. Check the listings in southwestgeorgiahelpwanted.com and in some of the other aggregator job sites. I saw ads there a while back. Independant restaurants come and go here. You could maybe become an owner/operator with a some capital behind you.

The race thing in Albany is all over the board, but overall, it is seen as driving many macro market dynamics, especially when you factor in the poverty and near-poverty levels. The docs and profs seem to mix pretty well, but there is some bumping in the mid-market and lower-market levels. Maybe it's just more subtle at more affluent levels. At the same time, generally, Albany is a very integrated community. But there is flight of all sorts. And some quiet political power struggling.

Heck, as I write this, my head is spinning with all kinds of contradictions!

It will be what you make it.

But then again, if you are bold and challenging, you might be in for a wild ride.

See what I mean.

Remember, depending where you fit in, this is a smaller town than the population stats suggest.

Most people come here for job or family connections. Military is a big one.

What about you? What do you expect out of this place. And why here?

Thank you for your response. We have been to Albany,Ga, around the time the motion picture "Ray" was released and we loved the town then. We are originally from Texas but I have went to college here in Texas and in San Diego, Calif.( grad. from Kelsey-Jenney College in May '02). Neither myself or my wife have any relatives in the Albany,Ga area. We have looked at either Southwest Fl or Southwest Ga. We are very young (25 & 27)and we aspire to have life experiences. We have no specific purpose to move to Albany,Ga. However when I was in College in Illinois in May 2005 I had a professor who she and her husband grew up in Albany and they had wonderful things to say about it. We are seeking a more stable economy than foreseen here in Texas. However Texas is a dominant force in the economy of the United States. Texas as of 2006,is home to six of the top 50 companies on the Fortune 500 list and 56 overall, more than any other state. Texas has an economy that is the second largest in the nation and the 15th largest in the world based on GDP. Georgia offers a little peace of mind. My grandmother was born and raised mostly in the Albany area, She used to tell us of her frequent visits back to Albany and how many things had changed since she was a little girl. She would tell us of the Albany Pecan Exchange, she did not live to see the Albany Civil Rights Movement Museum open in '98 in the Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church she passed in late '97. If she were alive today I am sure that she would tell myself and my wife that we will be pleased with the true southern charm of Georgia. She saw Albany form it's own world in her lifetime. I want that for my children. We have had no problems with working full-time steady jobs. We don't get in trouble with the law and we don't use drugs. We feel that Albany will be a good place to make our home.

Leesburg is a nice area to raise a family, Albany has great colleges, Darton is one, there are many osticles in every single town, large or small. Califorina or Nwe York, every state has it's onw issues to tend with, being politics, plants closing, what have you, but just explore the internet and the job situations for all members of family. one thing though, if it does not work out you and your family can up and move again.

As i stated, "Albany has great colleges, Darton is One" Colleges----meaning, MORE THAN ONE'
AND Darton is one---meaning, Darton is just one of a choice to choose from, If someone went online to check out the Albany area, they would read about the education options.I like the Albany area, there are lots to do and to see. I like downtown area. Albany has more than alot of other towns it's size.

Unlike Mr. "elroy rump", i think that albany is a fine town to raise children in but elroy rump is right about the racial hatred. i cant begin to tell you how many times ive been flipped off while walking in the mall and i am neither african american or caucasian american i am mongolian. And if you do move i think that a great food spot is the "lil red dog house" on broad ave. The chilly dogs are really good. I just love white women too. call me when you get here. my # is in the phone book.

well the fact that my wife is returning to the law-enforcement field is a true comfort. you see she has been a federal officer for 3 years and was injured in the line of duty. She has this knack for computers that is just awesome. she traces i.p. addresses and does her job well. she analyzes her suspects and she is good at what she does. I still don't feel that your ignorance and hatred will deter us.

Michael,
People are leaving Albany because of stupidity and bigotry all across the board. All that results in a lack of opportunity. Many young people with a future go elsewhere. In some ways, things are starting to really dumb-down. The comments we are reading in this thread are just a tip.

Without new effective leadership, Albany will continue to decline and the strangleholds of racism, poverty, lost industry, territorialism, paranoia, me-first-ism, broken family structures, crime etc etc will leave Albany in an irreversible death spiral. The city is in a tough circumstance with any leader, but with the most of the current rosters (not all), my oh my...

Albany needs people like you and your wife. If you choose to make the move, be strong quickly and take charge of your future there - before you become part of it. You can make your future, but not by following the crowd or anyone there for that matter.

If you are aggressive in a positive way, you can make something happen there with little start-up money compared to Atlanta.

I couldn't agree with you more! Albany isn't full of bad people. It's just how people grew up and the community they live in. With the high teen pregnacy, poverty, drugs, gangs, crimes on the rise everyday, etc. think about your kids future let alone yours. Good Paying Jobs in Albany are also scarce. Like everywhere else you will come across VERY IGNORANT PEOPLE but you have to focus on your goals. Albany needs more programs for our youth and help programs for the poor, disabled, and criminals released from the criminal justice system. Albany is lacking in numerous parts of the community. I would think twice. BUT like Speedy Stevie stated Albany needs people like you who want to make a difference and hopefully improving our city! You have to be able to HOLD YOUR OWN or you will fall in line with the rest of us.

Don't. Seriously. If you are looking for a job, Albany doesn't have them. If you want to move someplace simply to fit in with a mixed marriage, Chicago doesn't have the issues.

If you are looking to extend your educational credentials, then Atlanta would be the best place in the south for you. No matter what these chuckleheads would have you to believe, none of the schools located in Dougherty county- including ASU, Darton and the public school system - are very good at this time. If you have children, you should know that of the Dougherty County school board members with school-aged children, none of the kids attend public school.

All-in-all, from the standpoint of work, education, and social matters, Atlanta would be a better choice. Albany is on the cusp of utter failure in many ways - especially in terms of violent crimes and socioeconomics.
