An Alamogordo resident will get a chance to travel to the Democratic National Convention next month in North Carolina and cast a vote to nominate President Barack Obama as the presidential candidate.

Elizabeth "Liz" Watson is the recording secretary for the Democratic Party of Otero County, and works for the state Democratic party as the regional field director for the 2nd Congressional District. She also worked for the state party during the 2010 election and is a State Central Committee member.

She said she is taking items from Otero County to swap with delegates from other states, including white sand and pistachios, saying that a delegate is an "ambassador" of sorts, representing the state and county.

"I was elected by the Democratic Party of New Mexico and their voting body, which they call the State Central Committee," Watson said. "I was voted on by all the State Central Committee members who live in the 2nd Congressional District, which is basically southern New Mexico."

Watson said a delegate from Otero County hasn't been elected to go to a Democratic National Convention in 52 years, and someone from this remote county getting elected is a difficult feat to pull off.

"We're such a small presence in the 2nd Congressional District and in the state of New Mexico, so for somebody from Otero County to know enough people and get enough votes, it's a pretty big challenge."

She said about 13 women ran for a spot and four got the nod. There were also four men elected and a female alternate for the 2nd Congressional District.

New Mexico has 50 total delegates, Watson said.

"What those 50 people do, they've basically sworn themselves to vote for Barack Obama to appear on the ballot as the Democratic candidate," she said.

Watson said she would like to meet both Clintons, Hillary and Bill, and also President Obama. She said she likes the policies he has worked to implement, including the Affordable Care Act. She is looking forward to seeing him speak at the convention and believes Democrats will be able to pull off his re-election.

"The reason I support him is I really believe in the vision he has for this country," she said.

She said the vote this election cycle is largely symbolic because Obama is the presumptive nominee and because he is all ready the president. In 2008, there were delegates sworn to vote for Hillary Clinton, so being a delegate had a little more power that time around.

Still, she admits, getting to go to the DNC is still "pretty cool."

"Since there are only 50 people from New Mexico, I feel very honored to be able to represent Otero County," she said.

Now she is breaking the law, The White Sand is not allowed to be taken from the area, signs are all over stating it is against the law. Wonder if she bought it or bottled it her self...And there is a good reason no democrats are elected..

Looks like she follows the democrat party motto "Do as i say, Not as i do".

..."Democratic Party of New Mexico and their voting body, which they call the State Central Committee"...

The communists also call their voting and controlling body the central committee...

Liz most likely got her white sand from that spot on hwy 70 West, just past White Sands Monument where white sand "jumped the fence" with the help of mother nature, and is free for the taking in limited amounts. Ask a ranger. Venture past the Monument and see for yourself.

I know you wanted to discredit the lady being honored and were disturbed by the with a well written and positive front page article in the ADN. I also feel honored because I was one of those who voted for her as a delegate in Albuquerque. As a delegate, she will bring honor to Alamogordo. You, however, are a disgrace to your family with your jealous outbreaks.

Every now and then I get on topix to see if by some miracle there is actually a thread worth reading. I am usually disappointed by the childish, immature, mostly ridiculous posts by the likes of "Land-Locked Sailor", "Skuttlebutt", "Heisenberg" and many more silly monikers. I imagine these folks to be smelly little trolls sitting in dark rooms at their computers thinking of mean things to say about topics they know little about.

I rarely respond to any of the comments as the posts don't usually deserve a serious comment but today I just had to add my two cents:

Elizabeth Watson is a credit to Alamogordo, the Democratic Party and every organization to which she lends her time and talent. She would be able to argue you trolls under the table if you ever came out from under your respective bridges.

The white sand she will be taking to the convention is from our Chamber of Commerce in the promotional packets that they put together for advertising purposes.

Thank goodness that "Gorky" lends some intelligent recourse to the garbage in most of these threads. I agree with "Gorky": You folks are an embarassment and a disgrace. Take some time and examine your motives. Please try to get a life. Your constant rants are tedious, boring and often hurtful and do nothing to enhance what might otherwise be an interesting way to share opinions.

It's so nice to see a post that doesn't put anyone down and builds the character of this women by shouting that she would be able to argue all of the trolls down.

what a wonderful thing you have done.

By the way, I hope I get a chance to ask her about her troll arguing ability, That is very interesting.
