Looking to possibly relocating to the Alamo area. Children are middle/high school aged...very in involved in sports. Anyone give an opinion on the schools: curriculum, athletics, after school activites, etc.

Clean and general comments welcome...nasty and/or disrespectful comments aren't appreciated.

Thank you for any help/insite anyone has...

Does anyone know if there is a local newspaper that I can have mailed to me? I'm from out of state and would like to keep in touch with the local Alamo and/or Crockett County news.

Thanks.

You are in luck.

I have had three children attend Crockett County schools. Jackson (Madison County) is a train wreck, unless you don't mind spending $7,500 per year in the private schools. Haywood County and Gibson County aren't much better than Jackson. Dyersburg (city) is on the decline, but Dyer County is still healthy.

In my opinion what sets Crockett apart from other school districts is the leadership in the schools. While there are some fights, discipline is administered swiftly and fairly, and they don't tolerate crap. They have a strict dress code (collared shirts, no sagging, and belts must be worn if the pants have belt loops, etc.).

In recent years, Crockett County has picked up some great teaching talent from fed-up Jackson trachers. Crockett County HS has one of the best football programs in west TN.

We may be a little country, but we are genuine, real, hard working, church-going, family folks. Now some of us are a little more ornery than thers but, I don't think you will find that many positive qualities in ANY of the surrounding counties. We also are the only county in the state without a stop light....and proud of that.

Real estate is not real easy to find, and acreage is very scarce. Not much shopping, but there is plenty 17 minutes away in Jackson.

Good luck, and hope you are sold on Crockett County. It truly is God's coutry...especially out towards Gadsen. Sorry, the rest of you folks know that's true too.

Don't consider CCS if you have any children with disabilities or special needs. They do not know your student's rights and the ones they do know, they violate. There are a few awesome teachers and one lower level administration person is the BEST, but the upper administration (superintendent) is severely lacking in intelligence, common sense and guts. The middle school was the worst of all. Elementary was fine, CCHS was OK for the most part. CCMS is pathetic. If you have a football playing child, CCS is the place for you. They will make sure your son gets the grades needed to play football. Football, not education, is priority at CCHS.

anyone who has a bad experience will tell you bad things about any area or person and the same goes for the good experiences. all opinions are biased by experience. my family experiences in crockett county schools began around 1965 when my oldest brother started to school and my youngest child will graduate this year from here. minor things have come up over the years but to say the entire system is terrible is unjustified in my opinion. both my sons played football for CCHS and their grades were never altered by the school system. they worked for their grades and got no leniency when a heavy load of work was due the next day and football practice didnt end until 6 or 7. my 40+ years here have been good overall. that doesnt mean things dont piss me off from time but there is no other place I would rather be.

Alamo elementary is ranked in the top 10 % in the STATE on TCAP scores in Reading and Math. They also offer an outstanding program in the dramatic arts and put on a full 2 hour musical each year featuring 4th - 6th grades that is simply unbelievable. This program is now being offered at the high school with the same director. So many parents have found out about this outstanding school that they have now had to limit enrollment to residents only.( Jackson private school people were flocking here !) As far as the other schools in the county... they all have nice new facilities that I bet you wouldn't find in many counties around here. I have been in other systems and I must say this is one of the best. Yes... there are problems and never enough money but overall it is great. Many have nicknamed us " Trinity North without the $$$. Crockett County Has The Best School System To Me. I Graduated From CCHS And My Kids Now Go To Maury City Elementary School And I Love It. Now You Do Have Your Small Town Gossip Ofcourse There Is Alot Of That But Other Than That Its A Great School System I Can Honestly Say That. If I Stayed In Jackson Or Humboldy Or Dyersburg I Would Still Get Up In The Morning And Drive My Kids All The Way To Crockett County To Go To School.
